Is it worth reopening the debate on tension vs compliance? http://liutaiomottola.com/myth/perception.htm#mozTocId234250

I had a John East P Retro installed into my ABZ...... Gives you a much wider tonal range to play with.
I'm still inclined, incorrigible Luddite that I am, to put a P-Tone (or even two) in there (anyone do a part-ex?) for a more traditional tone, but there's tons in there if/when you need it. I'd personally suggest Dingwalls are more Linux than Apple :-)

I always squirm slightly when we play "boom, boom, out go the lights" :-)

From Wikipedia... The Stuttgard Conference of 1834 recommended C264 (A440) as the standard pitch based on Scheibler's studies with his Tonometer.[sup][6][/sup] For this reason A440 has been referred to as Stuttgard or Scheibler pitch. In 1939, an international conference recommended that the A above middle C be tuned to 440 Hz, now known as concert pitch. As a technical standard this was taken up by the International Organization for Standardization in 1955 and reaffirmed by them in 1975 as ISO 16. The difference between this and the diapason normal is due to confusion over the temperature at which the French standard should be measured. The initial standard was A = 439 Hz (info), but this was superseded by A = 440 Hz after complaints that 439 Hz was difficult to reproduce in a laboratory because 439 is a prime number.[sup][7][/sup] Despite such confusion, A = 440 Hz is the only official standard and is widely used around the world. Many orchestras in the United Kingdom adhere to this standard as concert pitch.[sup][8][/sup] In the United States some orchestras use A = 440 Hz, while others, such as New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, use A = 442 Hz.[sup][9][/sup] Nearly all modern symphony orchestras in Germany and Austria and many in other countries in continental Europe (such as Russia, Sweden and Spain) play with tune to A = 443 Hz. A = 442 Hz is also often used as tuning frequency in Europe,[sup][2][/sup] especially in Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Norway and Switzerland.[sup][10][/sup] In practice the orchestras tune to a note given out by the oboe, and many oboists use an electronic tuning device. When playing with fixed-pitch instruments such as the piano, the orchestra will generally tune to them—a piano will normally have been tuned to the orchestra's normal pitch. Overall, it is thought that the general trend since the middle of the 20th century has been for standard pitch to rise, though it has been rising far more slowly than it has in the past. Some orchestras like the Berliner Philharmoniker now use a slightly lower pitch (443 Hz) than their highest previous standard (445 Hz).[sup][11][/sup][sup][2][/sup] Many modern ensembles which specialize in the performance of Baroque music have agreed on a standard of A = 415 Hz.[sup][2][/sup] An exact equal-tempered semitone lower than A = 440 would be 440/2[sup]1/12[/sup] = 415.3047 Hz; this is rounded to the nearest integer. In principle this allows for playing along with modern fixed-pitch instruments if their parts are transposed down a semitone. It is, however, common performance practice, especially in the German Baroque idiom, to tune certain works to Chorton, approximately a semitone higher than A-440 (460–470 Hz) (e.g., Pre-Leipzig period cantatas of Bach).[sup][12][/sup]

The secondhand value for your 2005 Jazz has gone up? :-)
I bought my U.S Fender Jazz in 2005 for £800 new. 7 years, £500 and a few new crappy colours later, could someone tell me what's changed?
Search "gig kit sharing breakages"
What kind of gigs do you play where people forget their instruments?
-
Sure.. like that never happens with Fenders/Musicmans But you're right, there is a touch of the Apple "Fanboi" syndrome we should try and keep in check....
I still need to go over to Grand Wazoo's house and try his one but there is something Apple about them, a kind of pious attitude about those who don't use them that really puts me off.
Another unmentioned side effect is that no-one pesters you to "borrow" it at a gig when they've forgotten to bring their own bass along (edited for Irony)

PS was watching Malcolm in the Middle last night and heard this "If I wanted perfection I would have employed a robot - or a swede" :-)

Give my regards to Hendrik Linder :-) I assume you all know each other

I think ibanez SR505-805 are incredible value for money at the moment... I picked up a 2003 New Old Stock MIJ SR765 for £285 posted a couple of years ago.... And I've seen plenty of similar basses around.. SR's are 34" and 16.5 mm spacing...

Another fab bass player from Sweden :-) Go Away No, welcome :-) I think the days of brits touring in scandinavia are numbered,....

Another electronics numptie question - buying an amp from EU
markstuk replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
Seems a little sensitive as the UK's nominal 230V is legally allowed to swing from 216 to 253 V and I would hope any device supplied in the UK would not expire through 10V overload over a nominal 230 or 240 V...
Just one specific caveat that I know of first-hand, that being Tech21. I don't know about their amps, but the RBI, RPM and I believe PSA rack preamps come in 230v and 240v variants, and if you plug the 230v version in across here it'll work for about 5 mins (just long enough to get everything to ironing-temperature) then go POP! and that's it.. game over. Sound of giant can of worms being opened... And I think you're going to need define "authentic" very carefully if you ever get to writing down your conclusions... And one persons "authentic" is another persons "derivative".. It depends on your own experience and expectations.. But I think there are some things that generally apply (for me anyway) 1. It should come from a roots tradition which is commonly accepted in it's own location.. ie peoples music.. 2. It should be "all our own work" by the musicians involved, and be primarily about what they want to express rather than what they feel a much wider audience would feel at ease with. 3. Commercial success should not be the overriding driving factor. It's a start ...:-) Now shoot me down :-)

My suspicion would be that MB are not quite as popular as they were a while ago, and MB probably feel a smaller more focused distributor might do a better job.. Or Proel wanted better terms and MB refused to play ball.. Swings and roundabouts

Led zeppelin and black sabbath just dont do anything for me !
markstuk replied to gub's topic in General Discussion
Again, like a lot of people, LZ I find always interesting to listen to, lots going one.. Sabbath I find a little monolithic (although I thought they improved when Dio came on board) - almost a self parody in some ways.. -
Elixir? And Status make Hotwires AFAIK... Great value as well..

Welcome to the Dark Side John :-) -
To be fair it will take some time to feed into the supply chain, but I suspect speaker prices won't come down as fast as they went up.. It's petrol all over again.. How can a price rise in crude oil immediately affect the prices of petrol actually in the filling station..? And if it does, why does a price reduction in crude oil not immediately lower the price of petrol in the filling station?
-
Of course what no speaker supplier is telling us is that the price of Neodymium has more than halved over the past six months..... http://www.metal-pages.com/metals/neodymium/metal-prices-news-information/

Not to add fuel to the fire and as a happy RH450 owner, I suspect the BH500 uses a different poweramp to the RH/Classic 450... What is interesting is that when my singer wanted a much duller bass heavy /no mid/no treble EQ out of the RH it started having to work very hard to get a decent level..

This always reminds me of the elephant/mouse joke everytime I use it..

Hi, had a chance to use it in anger yesterday (and will also use it this evening) but it appears to do what it says on the tin... The bass has tightened up and appears to have more punch...
