The question Fender, with all their resources should be asking themselves is, "why have we not got this section of the market?"
Great point. For a company like Fender who have designed an instrument that can be mixed and matched easily (bolt on necks which can be switched around, easily changeable hardware etc) they are surprisingly limited in the options they offer to customers, hence this niche that Mark has exploited. We live in a world where we can tailor our products (phones, iPads, apps, streaming and tv recording boxes rather than live tv) to our individuality, our specific routines and lifestyle and I think the way Limelight works shows us that that some of us want the flexibility to customise aspects of our instrument without having to go to the Fender Custom Shop (which still has too many restrictions for some of us!).

Watching one of the worlds greatest players

This is what it's all about for me. Inspiring musicians spreading their passion through their talent to others. Hoping for a similar experience when I go to see Wooten in a couple of weeks time :-) -
Somebody has just placed an order for the same as the Burgundy Mist 64, except. 1. Lightly reliced. 2. Sea Foam Green with matching headstock. 3. BROWN TORTIE PLATE, yes discreet BROWN TORTIE PLATE The wait begins. It will be worth it.
Sounds amazing!
Having player a 66 P Bass and a 62 P, but not having even seen the amount of money they wanted, let alone have that money to spend, Limelight's custom relic'd vintage feel and look is one I'm highly interested in, I'd love to own an actual 1962 Fender Precision Bass but there's no chance of me having the money to buy one, so my alternative is to have something made up by Limelight or other such people, I wouldn't care if it had Fender on the headstock or not, I just want that comfy warn in feel and tone without the outlay!
This for me. Also, I gig quite a lot with a blues band (so aesthetically, the vintage Fender-look fits perfectly) and I would never take out an actual '64 precision for gigging in the places we play lol. However, I do want the look, the feel (and sound) of a vintage Fender without the HUGE insurance bill to cover gigging an actual vintage Fender. As far as I'm concerned, it's the same as buying a Road Worn series Fender except I get to spec it out :-) With mine, I asked for a J profile neck on a precision body, spec'd out the colour scheme and had the option to part-exchange a bass I wasn't using against it AND it was cheaper than a Road Worn. I would never have had the level of craftsmanship, attention to detail or spec options if I'd just bought a standard production Road Worn Fender model off the shelf.
It's an interesting subject. Maybe start a new Topic?
Which is what I suggested. I never got 'touchy' or told people to keep their opinions under lock and key. I just don't think it's fair to derail michaels thread with stuff that's already been discussed to death...
What point am I missing exactly? Please clarify. And I brought it up because this is a bass forum where people discuss subjects relating to bass. Is that OK? Some people get on their high horses about "fake" vintage Fenders on sites like Ebay and Gumtree - whereas on this thread some of those same people seem to have no problem with a range of basses that are trying very hard to look like vintage Fenders, but aren't. I think there is a bit of irony there. Maybe you don't - but that's cool.
I think the point you're missing is that a New Bass Day thread for a specific member's bass isn't the place for this (recycled and dull) 'discussion'. Maybe start a new thread elsewhere, away from all the people who ARE interested in this kind of thing? Unless you've come here with the intention of trying to goad people into an argument? Either way, I dont think this is this place for it. It's just detracted away from the discussion about Michael's lovely new bass :-)
Apologies to all the lovely keys players reading this who are musically adept, perfectly sane, humble, modest and punctual!
I'm pretty sure the one keyboard player that fits that description won't be reading this as he'll be booked up solid until 2028!
But what about this? Hmmm? Eh?
I also looked forward to your reports Michael! (And the video/sound samples were excellent and thorough!)
Nice! So what you gone for then Mr Discreet? Also Skej when's your P due? Can't be long now?!
Mark initially said end of June but just as an approx date but due to a bit of time away and another build taking a bit longer than expected he asked if he could move the date back a little (after asking me if that was ok :-)) to 'early July'... I am in no rush as I've got two basses to cover gig easily and I'd rather he took his time and did it properly than rush to finish it. Not too long either way :-)
FEDEX ARE BRINGING IT TOMORROW!!!! WOOT!!!!
I look forward to the review/NBD thread :-) I hope you don't have a sonic blue and tort 8 string?!

In ours, we split the gig money into equal parts (so 5 for four of us) and the additional share goes into the pot. This covers costs such as transport (petrol, van, insurance and PA bits) as well as gear insurance for everyone. Everything outside of that (individual gear and upkeep of it) is paid for by band members. Any extra money in the pot at the a of the gear goes to the Christmas do and then any left over after that goes into the 'buying a drink at the gig' fund :-)
I'm glad someone has finally said this. End of the day, it's a bass. A knackered old bass. I could understand a slight hike in price if he had of used it on a few notable albums as that's historical but still shouldn't merit it being nearly £20k. Or if it was John Entwistle's (excuse my spelling) If they manage to sell it, i'll be extremely surprised.
£19k is nothing though to some people. I have a mate who worked in a London music store and they had regular customers from overseas that would buy up stupid amounts (in volume and money) of gear. He managed to sell a Martin D100 at over £80k to an oil baron who wanted it on his wall. £19k is nothing if you're selling in the right circles (which stores like this do). I mean, it's $35k for a Fodera Anthony Jackson that he's never even touched. It'd be close to/exceeding £19k for a standard orchestral upright. £19k for a low serial number Fender owned by one of the most prolific bassists is a bargain when you put it into context for the right person. In short, I would not be surprised if they managed to sell it.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to represent the 'for' or 'against' side of the argument... -
And this is why we use MU contracts when booking with a venue... We had a venue try to cancel on us because they'd booked us for the opening England game. We gently reminded them of the contract terms and offered to play and then without any threats or arguments (or bliddy Facebook nonsense!), they honoured our agreement and cancelled with full payment. I had a lovely time watching the match with my mates and some free beer money :-)
Time for the public to rise up against the oppressive tort police! Vivá la revólution!
Im with you! Tort on this would look amazing... ;-)
-
It's all subjective and down to opinion of course, but technically LPB and tort is illegal. Why do you think Fender never offered this colour combination (except for special orders from people who had no taste)?
I'm with you on this! I heard the LPB/combo was reserved specifically for anyone wanting to smash up a bass on stage...
I've emailed back and forth with Mark, I'll be straight up and say he seems downright rude, seems to have no idea about customer service and doesn't really pay that much attention to the rabble he's putting on the website either. I could not recommend the guys over at Bassgear more.
+1... He posted on Facebook earlier today about Dunlop string offer and used a picture that had another company logo (rich tone) on it. Bassgear every time for me.
Thus says the man who happily sold me one! No issues, however. I knew what I was buying - they have their foibles, but they play and sound superb
In my defence, I said 'in short'... There are obviously some exceptions and I didn't mean the newer EB range as they are excellent quality! It's the other stuff like thunderbirds (the Gibson Thunderbirds that we've had in have been no better quality than the Epiphone models but obviously carry a much larger price tag!) and SGs but mostly the guitars (in fact, usually the stuff that has a high gloss lacquer finish) that tend to be badly finished. We had a Memphis custom ES175 in and they hadn't even painted under the neck pocket!! Just sprayed it with the neck already set. We also had a VOS 335 and the lacquer was cracking around the Gibson inlay on the headstock. Had to send them both back and they are £2500+ guitars! Those EB basses are lovely though and worth every single penny!
By saying guitarists must behave themselves, does that mean no Stairway to Heaven, Paranoid and Smoke on the Water? Or is that just those over 45?
With 'Frozen' and Adele chiming out from the pianos most days, I imagine the egocentric guitar noodling of the past would be welcome relief in most music retail stores these days!
