Very nice pics! Still think you need a Spitfire guard, though...
Don't take this wrong way but I liked the tort guard mark gave you more than the spitfire one, so I think I'm gonna stick with mine. I'm sure the bank manager will thank me for that decision too!

NBD - Limelight Jazz Bass 1960 YOB *Spitfire Guard!*
skej21 replied to discreet's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for this... I just noticed your post over there. Well that's good news. When I posted my Bass Doc Custom P on here I got all sorts of crap from an American builder about the F decal. Which is weird, because he was basically building Fenders and his decal was in fact an F decal script copy anyway (just using his name)! Tsk!
You may have noticed that I have refrained from posting certain pics of my new bass for related reasons... -
Outrageous! I have actually been rolling about laughing at that! Now back to the 64 P
I'm looking forward to your NBD limelight thread :-)

Finally had a chance to take some of my own photos. They show the true colour of the finish and detail of the wear much better I think. Enjoy :-)
the nonsense you just posted about the fives being pointless unless you amplify those frequencies will confuse people more What amps have you got then and what are the cut off frequencies set at?
I actually stated that the five strings are useless to you (personally) as you said you can't hear below 45hz.
-
Someone who knows more about this should be able to explain but it doesn't work at all how you are understanding it, musical notes are more dimensional than that, the Genz amp cuts below 80hz for example unless you engage LF boost, but trust me it still produces sounds when you play a low B, what you are left with is the parts we hear as clear and defined rather than a farty rumble. Can anyone help explain it for me, I presume it involves the fundamental frequency and it's under tones?
I understand the scientific aspects of what we are discussing fine thanks. However, some members on here may not have had the opportunity to gather this knowledge through experience/education and rely on this forum for information. What you said was 'we can't hear down to 45hz' which is factually incorrect.
-
That's great in isolation but in reality and in a band mix all it's doing is sucking up wattage.
Sorry man but this just doesn't make sense. You own 3 five strings and you're saying you can't hear below 45hz in a mix? The frequency of a bottom E on a 4 string bass (if tuned correctly) is 41hz. The low B on a 5/6 string bass (if tuned correctly) rings out at 30.868hz (let's say 31hz for ease), so you're essentially saying that your low B string is totally redundant in a mix. If that's the case, why did you bother buying 3 five strings basses if you can't hear below an F (approx 45hz) in a mix...

I've played most of the SR range from the 300, 500, 600, 1200, 1600 etc but for me the 1800 is king. Just lovely!

Like JTUK says, they've put their stall out as far as what they are demanding from you so you should do likewise. Id want to know how many gigs they can prove are prebooked, I'd want to know that they run the band professionally (ie have contractual agreements for the prebooked gigs that cover cancellations with full pay as i wouldn't be committing my time to something and then losing money because they don't run things properly!) and find out what the fee is for your ability to play 'at an expert level'... Will they be paying you an expert's wage? I'd also want to know how transport, gear insurance and other costs were paid for. An extra split of band payment that goes into a pot? Covered by individual musicians? All that kind of thing. If they want to run the band as professionally as they say, they should be able to answer all those questions and give you the chance to make your own mind up before the audition (which could save you all a lot of time!)

Aguilar AG4P-60? Modelled on Dave boonshofts pre CBS Fender pickups and sounds beautiful.

Write on my name and date of birth with a UV pen in places out of sight. I then take detailed photographs of the instrument showing unique features (wear etc) so that they match the visual of the bass if it's stolen. I scan receipts and email all this information to myself as close to the date of purchase as possible. I then get insurance so that it's covered for theft and I can prove what was stolen if needs be thanks to the info gathered early on. Saying that, all of my basses are roadworn so I doubt they look worthy of theft next to the shiny stuff the other guys use!

Ibanez SR1800! The Nordstrand big singles are awesome and it looks beautiful. Great feel to the neck and nice playability and they're a steal if you can find one second hand :-)
Soooo...living in Devon i went to see my good friend Mark (aka Classic & Cool Guitars) today....er...came back with something, a sister for my 74Jazz: http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/basses/limelight00111pbass.htm Anyhow think i'm in the club . Marks going to send me a tort plate in the post though - (I love the look of your P Skej21), he didn't have one at the time. So, yup...pretty amazing aren't they, so happy with the weight too - i have to many very heavy basses!!!. I'd write a lot more but i need a P-Funk...
Oooooh! Im glad mine inspired you to go for the same colour scheme. It'll look lovely and if it plays anything like mine, it'll be worth every penny :-) NBD thread with sound samples/pics (especially once you fit the tort guard!!)

What's the best looking bass for £300 or under
skej21 replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
Epiphone Ltd Ed Allen Woody Rumblekat would be my choice. Stunning bass for under £300! -
I guess he should've been dishonest and told the OP that the bass had fallen or been knocked off the stand, and was broken .
Or he could have just listed the item properly? If he didn't want it to go cheaply, he's the only one who can set a reserve and he should've done so. He deserves negative feedback to ensure nobody else wastes their time trying to deal with him IMO.
I would never have believed that my #1 would ever again be a Jazz... but there you have it. It is. I used it at the Summertyne festival in Gateshead over the weekend. The video is fuzzy, but here's a clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FEnQALf0NQ
Nice! I was an out and out jazz bass player until January. Got my Nate Mendel and the jazz width nut on a precision was a revelation. Now my Limelight precision is my #1. It would appear Limelight basses have the quality to sway anyone!!
Walk it and no one will care.....
Hell, most of the dep gigs I play, I could walk and nobody would care... As long as they get a cig break and some bingo!
Where can you buy the decals from?
This has been covered here already so I'll save us the time of going through it again: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/145833-fender-p-bass-decals/
Welcome to the club.........if there is such a thing. I can't put a hair in the tone of yours and mine, they do sound good eh. Enjoy !!
Yes! It's a beautiful instrument. I'm only no 133 in the club. It's quite exclusive by all accounts :-)

I'd like to echo what Discreet has said about Mark. Also, regarding the decal, my bass came with nothing on the front of the headstock as it was completed after the basschat thread that surfaced and made its way to Mark, leading to a decision to not include recognisable decals. Marks limelight serial number markings on the back of the headstock are present on my bass and I may fit a decal on the front to complete the look :-)
-
Yeah, I'm unbelievably happy with it!

So, here it is. My new Limelight '64 Precision bass. I'll try and get the boring stuff out of the way first! Specifications I asked Mark to follow were a white Precision bass with tortoise shell plate, a neck with a rosewood 'board, jazz width nut, clay dot inlays and lightly relic'd. I also requested a 1964 serial number on the neck plate as a tribute to someone close for sentimental reasons. My thoughts... In a word, stunning. The relic job is heavier than I had imagined (and heavier than the pics suggest) but I'm absolutely chuffed to bits with it. I have only mentioned this in case someone is thinking about getting one and wants VERY light relicing, if so you may need to say so. As far as I'm concerned, mine is perfect and very well executed. It is very similar to the relic job on my friends Fender CS '63 light relic precision. The feel of the bass is lovely and has instant 'mojo'. The pickups sound fantastic. I've swapped the rounds that were fitted (that I didn't really like the sound of) for D'Addario Chromes and it's a totally different beast! It took a slight setup tweak to get it playing as I like (only a minor bridge saddle adjustment as the neck was bang on!) and I was off. I've played it at two gigs (one Friday and one last night) and it got rave reviews from band members. The guy who leads the band and mixes the sound said it was just perfect straight into the desk and they all love the aesthetics. Tonally, it's perfect for what we play and it felt so nice to play a gig with it. It's also surprisingly light at 9lbs!! I've attached some quick phone pics (I'll put better quality ones up later when I'm not on my phone!) and quick vid. Apologies for poor playing as I did them all in one take very quickly and directly into my interface (to give the most transparent example!). If you're thinking about putting some money Marks way, you could do A LOT worse. He's a great guy, excellent communications, have a rear price on another bass I used as part exchange and completed the work quickly and to a very high standard. Top guy, top company and a really superb instrument. I'm chuffed :-D

So it arrived this morning. First impressions are very good. The relic job is stunning (but even 'light' relicing is still quite heavy. I love it but if you're thinking about your own build and just want a few minor dings then maybe mention it). The setup out the box was excellent and as previous owners of Limelight instruments have said, it's just instant mojo! The neck feels incredible and the colour of the aged nitro on the body is lovely. Sat it next to the Fender road worn series guitars we have in the shop and it wipes the floor with them, for less money! It's also really light which I wasn't expecting. First impression are great and I'll try and get some sound samples up ASAP for anyone who is interested.

I've had the honour of playing in a band that opened up for Johnny a few times. A real legend and a thoroughly decent guy. He'll be missed.
