1.
I emailed D'addario with a question about these strings and they didn't answer it, they sent me a link to a page on their site which didn't outrightly answer it either. My question is this: Do these beasts make a heavier gauge feel slightly lighter to play, or vice versa? I feel like Super Light are a teeny bit too flappy and Light are a bit too stiff and my hands fatigue quickly. I need a gauge in the middle!! Persevering with the Light gauge has not yet paid off and my hands end up aching, but Super Light play easily and are tremendous for slap but are just too darn flappety for fingerstyle playing. Can anyone recommend a solution (other than "man up" or "give up" please!)
Dunlop Super Bright strings! They have the same gauges as the D'Addarios (.045-.105 etc) but with a lighter feel, more flexibility within the strings and lower tension. So if you but a set of Dunlops that are an equivalent gauge to the D'Addario Light set, theoretically they should feel lighter than the D'Addario light set but without being as flappy as the D'Addario Super Light set :-) I know this as I recently went through the same thing. I really like a light set (.040-.100) and thought the D'Addario version was a little bit too tense still but when I tried the extra super light set (.035-.095) they were way too flappy. I tried some of the Dunlop Super Bright nickels (.040-.100) and they are perfect! They also have a much tighter wrap ratio which feels much smoother and gives a lovely focused bottom end to my precision in particular and I've had them on for nearly 8 weeks with no deadness despite at least 2 hours play a day. Great value for money :-)
 2. Awesome. Its hard not to go back to a precision when you have something else. It has to be said though, you change your basses quicker than I change my underwear!!
 3. Got my hands on one of these today. Really impressed for the price! I know that without pics etc, so here you go :-) apologies for poor quality, it's just uploaded from my phone!
 4. I'm pretty sure this forum makes GAS worse for most of us. I've been avoiding the sale section and spending less time on here and I've noticed a significant drop in GAS!
 5. Aguilar DB112NT for me. Just the right amount of every aspect of tone. Warm, responsive, not too much treble (thanks to the lack of tweeter), reasonably lightweight and looks AWESOME in tweed. Perfection for me.
 6.
Oh right! Yes, at that price it would have to be, wouldn't it?
I would say so. The Yamaha basses are nice but seem to have a bit of a loyal fan base who seem a bit bias to me. I've played a fair few that have come through the local shops near me and I think they're ok for theon ey but I don't see why some many people love them. All of the Overwater by Tanglewoods that I've ever played have been excellent though. Quality, finish, great electronics and don't feel like a budget bass. Id never buy one new off the shelf as you're pretty much throwing your money away as they depreciate so much but at a second hand price, the Overwaters are awesome value for money. Just my opinion though (let's clear that up before the crazy Yamaha fanboys come to get me!)
 7.
To be fair, that's like comparing apples and oranges. One is a mass-produced Japanese instrument from a company that also make guitars, effects, keyboards, outboard motors and motorbikes(!) and the other is a range of (mostly) hand-built British basses. Overwater probably sell as many as they need/want to... Good to hear that the OP is happy though - those Vintages are mighty fine basses by all reports!
I think in this case, the OP may be referring to a mass produced (Korean?) 'Overwater by Tanglewood' bass rather than the custom instruments?
 8. After paypal and ebay take their cut, they can only be making £20 on that bass. What's the point?! Especially if someone claims it hasn't turned up and gets the item and their money back. Surely not worth the hassle or risk for the sake of such small amounts?
 9. The new iCurve is going to be a pain in the arse to get in my gig bag!!
 10.
Maybe everyone else gigs with sandpaper dangling from their armpit, but I've never had the forearm contour wear through on any instrument, let alone the edges of the entire body?!

I have... a bit.
6v6, do you have any basses with a thin nitrocellulose finish? I never wore the finish away on any of my gloss urethane finishes but my Nate Mendel (which I've only had since January!) is already showing wear all over it!
 11.
Agreed. Exactly the same as the Parker Fly instruments -- the guitars look amazing, the basses look... meh. And despite the healthy exchange rate, by the time they've made their way to the UK that'll translate as "£799 for the Kingfisher and £749 for the Kestrel".
I doubt they'll be that much. They won't be US made so their prices and conversion will have little to do with our prices. I imagine they'll be priced to sit alongside the electric guitar SE range which is between £500-700. Maybe £649 and £699?
 12. iReal Pro and ForScore for me. Both great apps. I love the composition element in iReal Pro (writing your own lead sheets) it's great for keeping the practice routine fresh and ForScore is great for all reading (practice and gigging!).
 13.
This has all got very complicated. So to summarise... Discreet had an NBD thread relating to his new Limelight bass. WoT had a similar thread. I made a few comments on WoT's thread which, in hindsight, were not in the appropriate place. I acted on advice given, and started another thread which underwent a couple of title changes due to the fact that I was not 100% sure what the actual subject matter was! Many posts were made in that thread, and as a result of it (seemingly) the guy who makes Limelight basses made a decision about the branding of his basses. That was brought to our attention by Discreet in this thread. Despite Karlfer's accusation, I did not have (and do not have) an "agenda". I stated this clearly in the thread that I started. But some people do not read all of a thread before contributing. And to think that I was accused of being "easily offended"!!
Completely agree. As one of those who suggested a new thread was a good idea (to stop poor Michaels NBD thread descending into chaos!) I think your intentions were purely objective (No agenda!) and I have enjoyed reading yours and others views on the subject as a result of this thread. Marks decision to change his business plan was probably already made and this has simply given him clarification that it was the right decision. It was a matter of time before this turned into a verbal brawl because of a few people who don't read the thread properly and go in all guns blazing... Isn't that what Basschat is all about?! :-P
 14.
The cycle of GAS is eternal.
Not for us all! I've decided my limelight will be my penultimate bass. I know what I like now and I've decided that my next (and final!) bass will be a custom build and then that'll be the end of it. After my limelight shows up and I've given samples to anyone who wants them, I'm going to spend more spare time engaging with music (home recording, practicing more, writing again etc) and leaving this forum for good (as it seems to be my biggest distraction and only cause of GAS!) :-)
 15.
Still waiting for someone with a limelight P to upload some tones getting seriously itchy over ordering my own!
Looks like you'll be waiting til I get mine. I'll PM you if I'm the first to get something recorded with a link :-)
 16. One nighters for me. The adrenaline is the thing that swings it for me but also getting to meet a lot of new musicians rather than the same guys and songs all the time :-) if I had the choice, it's be reading gigs every time. Always great fun!
 17. Had a word with the guys from Dunlop who kindly gave me one to try. Really impressive and it's nice that it uses a 9v input and has an internal power double to 18v, so no faffing with about trying to find an 18v power supply or a power brick :-) looks cool and is compact compared to my Aggy TH. Awesome preamp for the money and I reckon I'll be getting one.
 18.
And the best bit is: the world hasn't ended because it has a Fender logo on it
The world hasn't ended?! They lied to us!! (That TKS cab is LARVELY by the way ;-))
 19.
Jeans, Next, Gucci. They are of no importance to ME. I have bought many Fenders in the last 39 years. They do not currently provide a reasonably priced bass in the specifications I would like. Somebody else does. Yes I would like it with Fender on the top because it is a homage to one of their earlier instruments that I adore. Can't afford real or custom shop. I am not buying it to make a profit, I'm buying it for Me to gig. The aesthetics are for ME. Most luthier built instruments you will lose money on. That isn't an issue for me. I would have bought this instrument from Peterbuilt except they do not put Fender logos on. I really don't give a monkey's wang about anybody else's thought's about how shallow I am.
I'm with ya mate!
 20.
They probably wouldn't know a bass from a guitar if the truth be known.
That's if they even realise I'm with the band... 'Whos that guy lurking in the corner behind the band?! What a weirdo!'
 21.
Particularly for me (selfish yes) as I posted my cheque late last night and he will get it tomorrow.
PM'd dude!
 22.
I just don't get the obsession with having to have a Fender logo. Can someone please explain it to me.
For the exact same reason that you insist on not having a bass with a Fender logo on it... Because you think it's cool.
 23.
If you want a Fender decal on the headstock of your bass then surely you should buy a Fender. If these Limelight basses are all they are cracked up to be doesn't it make more sense for them to be be branded "Limelight" instead of pretending to be something they are not?
Does it really matter if you're not interested in them anyway?
 24.
Please quote the original bit I quoted before you selectively quote me! I said that he couldn't buy a Warmoth, Allparts, Mighty Mite neck with a logo on it. And he can't! Of course Fender can sell you a neck with Fender on it!
Which totally invalidates your point about buying a fender decal'd neck and fitting it to a non-fender body...
 25.
You can't buy them with a decal. Fender won't even sell you a decal to use on a restoration job.
I'm sorry but you're wrong. I have the official 2014 Fender catalogue in front of me and you can buy a fully decal'd Fender Jazz or Precision neck straight from Fender. The prices online are in dollars but my catalogue has them in pounds with relevant UK EAN/UPC codes so they are available to purchase and fit to any bass body or parts that I like. http://www.fender.com/store/precision-bass-necks/
