1.
If you want a Fender decal on the headstock of your bass then surely you should buy a Fender. If these Limelight basses are all they are cracked up to be doesn't it make more sense for them to be be branded "Limelight" instead of pretending to be something they are not?
Does it really matter if you're not interested in them anyway?
 2.
Please quote the original bit I quoted before you selectively quote me! I said that he couldn't buy a Warmoth, Allparts, Mighty Mite neck with a logo on it. And he can't! Of course Fender can sell you a neck with Fender on it!
Which totally invalidates your point about buying a fender decal'd neck and fitting it to a non-fender body...
 3.
You can't buy them with a decal. Fender won't even sell you a decal to use on a restoration job.
I'm sorry but you're wrong. I have the official 2014 Fender catalogue in front of me and you can buy a fully decal'd Fender Jazz or Precision neck straight from Fender. The prices online are in dollars but my catalogue has them in pounds with relevant UK EAN/UPC codes so they are available to purchase and fit to any bass body or parts that I like. http://www.fender.com/store/precision-bass-necks/
 4.
Allparts pay Fender a fee to be allowed to make necks with the Fender headstock shape. They are made to allow those us clumsy bass players to replace a damage neck on our beloved Fenders. Even then, if that bass is sold again the seller should say that the neck is a non-Fender replacement, even if it is authorised. However - if you, me, whoever buys an authorised Fender neck made by Allparts and sticks it on an authorised Allparts Fender body, and then adds a Fender decal and even adds genuine Fender pickups, tuning heads, 'plate etc etc, it is still not a Fender. It has not been made by Fender. Now that's fine if it is for your own use, but the moment you try to sell it as a Fender, then you breach the Trade Marks Act and the Copyright Patents & Designs Act. Fender don't even supply logos / decals to Allparts / Warmoth etc. They keep those for their own replacement necks.
If that is the case, why do fender let me buy an official Fender neck with fender decal via the official Fender website so that I can fit it to whatever I like? http://www.fender.com/store/precision-bass-necks/
 5.
As long as it's bolted onto a genuine Fender body as an authorised replacement. Not otherwise.
Can you just tell me where it states that has to be the case?
 6.
My Gibson EB 2014 with TC E gear.
Nice! I look forward to seeing next week's rig ;-) Fender and Markbass? :-P
 7.
OK fair enough. Those of you who did order a Limelight bass built to your spec why did you have a Fender logo put on it?
For the same reason that any bass has a logo decal on it. Thats how the maker makes them. Whilst I asked for a specific neck profile and colour scheme and amount of relicing, I was also under the impression that both the limelight and fender logo would be present as the instrument was purchased with the intention of being a faithful reproduction of a specific vintage '64 Fender precision bass by Limelight guitars.
 8.
Oh yes indeed!! Hmmmm. Yes, I guess it has in a way. But I think the THREE NBD threads relating to his basses in the last few days has also contributed to that... It's a difficult one. I can see that he is doing a great job in a really cool niche of the market, but there is just something that doesn't quite sit right for me. Maybe I am not phrasing it very well though
I must point out that I didn't mean you specifically. There's just content in this thread that is too personal for my liking. Your views on it are objective and interesting :-)
 9.
I see no witch hunt... We are discussing the issues around a manufacturer making copies/tributes/facsimiles... (call them what you will) of a well known range of basses. Isn't that what bass guitar forums are for? However, in hindsight I can see how the thread title may be seen as provocative. I will change it for that reason.
Like I said, a general discussion is something is be really interested in. I'd find it interesting to read peoples views but this has turned into a discussion about marks business not the general issue of copyright/relic instruments...
 10. Mark is not the first (or only) person to have built a business like this and he won't be the last. I don't see why a more general discussion about relic'd instruments and copyright had to turn into a witch hunt for one persons business...
 11. It'd be interesting to hear Molan's view on it. Bassgear have sold Nash basses and they are essentially the same thing (not just Limelight)... http://www.bassgear.co.uk/product/nash-jb63/
 12.
I remember reading all the PRS -v- Gibson stuff. Functionality didn't come into it. Gibson lost because their lawyer famously told the Court "Only an idiot would get confused at the point of sale" on account that the PRS Single Cut and the Gibson Les Paul are actually very different and have their own names on the headstocks and the different shapes. Point of Sale doesn't have to be from a shop - it can be any subsequent sale as well. But the Limelight ones use Fender's proper logo and headstock shape. I can't imagine that scribbling Limelight on the back in biro would be enough. I don't like it. It's too easy for the next owner to remove the Limelight bit and try and flog it as a proper Fender.
That would be a fair comment IF Mark didn't list the basses specifically as Limelight instruments, not include any dating stamps on neck/body or pots AND included close-up shots of the Fender decal in the photos of he listed item. Mark does none of this and is very clear that you are not buying a Fender. You really would have to be an idiot to think you were. As for resell 'fraud', that's not really an argument. I could buy a Squier bass and put a Fender decal on and sell it as a Fender. There nothing Squier can do about that, I'd be responsible.
 13.
What do you suggest? Rhythm Stick?
Haha. Sex on fire?
 14.
Doh! I knew someone would say that!!
If you want to be really picky, we should all play the same thing for samples ;-)
 15.
My new Status Half-Wounds haven't arrived yet... should I record some sound files with the stock roundwounds? I don't know what they are - generic 45-105 rounds... a bit too bright and boingy for me.
A before and after (ie rounds and flats) would be good :-)
 16. Like discreet, I'm just glad I got my order in quickly!
 17.
Korg Volca Keys, Bass & Beats These three little boxes look like fun for not very much money! New Old Skool, anyone? http://www.gear4musi...gn=email-250614 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gau7UIzYY0
Having tried them at Gear4Music's shiny new showroom, my limited advice would be 1) Syncing them all together makes them loads cooler 2) Run the sound through decent speakers or headphones because they sound awful through the built-in speaker.
 18.
As bass players, We may gently close our eyes whilst getting carried away on a wave of euphoria as the band sounds so good. We may exhibit a subtle expression of utter boredom 11 minutes into the guitarists trademark "Red house" solo. Our eyes may widen a little at the appearance of a stunningly attractive member of the audience. But, we don't pull daft bass faces like guitarists who wah-wah with their mouths as they simulate inflating a car tyre with a Cry-baby. Or grit their teeth with eyes screwed shut as they under bend at the 20th fret somehow expecting more teeth gritting to equate to more string bending...... Or do we?
Janek Gwizdala... Nuff said.
 19.
The question Fender, with all their resources should be asking themselves is, "why have we not got this section of the market?"
Great point. For a company like Fender who have designed an instrument that can be mixed and matched easily (bolt on necks which can be switched around, easily changeable hardware etc) they are surprisingly limited in the options they offer to customers, hence this niche that Mark has exploited. We live in a world where we can tailor our products (phones, iPads, apps, streaming and tv recording boxes rather than live tv) to our individuality, our specific routines and lifestyle and I think the way Limelight works shows us that that some of us want the flexibility to customise aspects of our instrument without having to go to the Fender Custom Shop (which still has too many restrictions for some of us!).
 20.
Ok so this is us last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzAZQOSgI2o and this is the 1st gig (phone cam so it's not the best quality) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv2BcL0Ajok
Fixed for those of us on mobiles :-)
 21. Leeds :-)
 22. This is what it's all about for me. Inspiring musicians spreading their passion through their talent to others. Hoping for a similar experience when I go to see Wooten in a couple of weeks time :-)
 23.
Somebody has just placed an order for the same as the Burgundy Mist 64, except. 1. Lightly reliced. 2. Sea Foam Green with matching headstock. 3. BROWN TORTIE PLATE, yes discreet BROWN TORTIE PLATE The wait begins. It will be worth it.
Sounds amazing!
 24.
Having player a 66 P Bass and a 62 P, but not having even seen the amount of money they wanted, let alone have that money to spend, Limelight's custom relic'd vintage feel and look is one I'm highly interested in, I'd love to own an actual 1962 Fender Precision Bass but there's no chance of me having the money to buy one, so my alternative is to have something made up by Limelight or other such people, I wouldn't care if it had Fender on the headstock or not, I just want that comfy warn in feel and tone without the outlay!
This for me. Also, I gig quite a lot with a blues band (so aesthetically, the vintage Fender-look fits perfectly) and I would never take out an actual '64 precision for gigging in the places we play lol. However, I do want the look, the feel (and sound) of a vintage Fender without the HUGE insurance bill to cover gigging an actual vintage Fender. As far as I'm concerned, it's the same as buying a Road Worn series Fender except I get to spec it out :-) With mine, I asked for a J profile neck on a precision body, spec'd out the colour scheme and had the option to part-exchange a bass I wasn't using against it AND it was cheaper than a Road Worn. I would never have had the level of craftsmanship, attention to detail or spec options if I'd just bought a standard production Road Worn Fender model off the shelf.
