1.
Beware the typos in the book which may lead to confusion but he used to have a list of correction on his website.
Here they are: http://garywillis.com/pages/print/fbhcorrect.html
2. Re. Hector's note. It is hard work and I can't say I've ever finished it really but it's let me come up with lines and an approach for any chord change, based on practical engagement by playing. And it's pattern based which works for me although I understand this is not for everyone. The Berlin/Viola approach in comparison doesn't take into account the movement of a walking line or the extensions etc. It's a much more theoretical approach which gradually results in chromatic overload when you reach the tone/semi-tone above, semi-tone below, then chord tone point. You'll get real lines out of Willis' method. And listening/playing over changes. Beware the typos in the book which may lead to confusion but he used to have a list of correction on his website.
3. I'll save you the bother - no joke: Buy some manuscript paper and write these formula and you'll have the meat of both books: M7, m7, o7, m/M7 arpeggios with each of the four tones approached from a half step below - i.e. each arpeggio now being a scale of 8 notes - play the approach notes on the weak beats, tones on the stong beats. Now do the same but with two approach notes, diatonic step above each tone, then semitone below. So each arpeggio tone now has two approach notes. Finally, do the same thing with three approach notes: tone and semi tone above, semi tone below then the arpeggio tone. Finally do this in all keys. That's the books. There's about as much description of the application of this concept in the books as I've given here. I'd recommend above both these books, Gary Willis' 'Fingerboad Harmony for Bass' which teaches the same concept but applied to chord changes from the start. You'll be practising a II V chord tone approach with passing notes with the CD within 15mins of opening it! visog
4. You just don't appreciate fine art.... It's what Roger Glover was trying to do...
5. Right so I finally get try one care of Andertons in Guilford. They Set me up in their 'Bass room' with the BTB33 into a nice Markbass combo and left me to it. It's a really cool bass: through-neck, barts, 3-band EQ, mono-rail bridge. However, after playing for a while I realised that I wasn't getting much more than a standard 5. So yes it's up a forth which is OK if that suits your music but other than that, it's the same number of notes as any other 5-string 24-fret give or take (it has a weird s-shaped neck end). Also the 33" scale was pretty much undetectable in comparison with my GB 35" scale. Similar position and string tension. (In contrast, an Alembic SC with 31" scale reduced the strings to floppy butter making everyone Stanley (almost) with sheer effortless of playing.) So my verdict was not to buy, but for someone without a 5, or entering the market for a 5, it's a hell of a bass for the money...
6. It's the incredible Mick Karn. Quite a line-up! As stated above, a similar line-up did a great job of a great Kate Bush song with Pete Townsend instead of MU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJvXpvH2-Hk This utilises MK's talents much more... RIP Mick.

Strange Bass

Welcome to the forum. On a minor point there is a 'bass guitar' specific forum but seems everyone posts everything in general now and the moderators just let it happen. Madness. Anyway, in response to your question. I'm going to go with a gut feel based on its Alembic morphing into a Carl Thompson which says to me an American builder by the name of Ron Blake. Also the banjo peg-head is also redolent of his work. Bit of wild suggestion I know and I've no other basis other than aesthetics. Do you have any indication of its provenance? Could it have been imported from America? Visog
8. Well I enjoyed them last night at the Lowry. The three drummers worked really well to my ears. I think due to their tight rehearsal and arrangements. Also 'middle drummer' played a lot of mellotron on the older songs. Didn't think I'd get to hear 'Easy Money' live! It was great, as was 'Schizoid Man', 'Court of the Crimson King', 'Epitaph' and the mighty 'Starless'. As near to a greatest hits tour that Fripp will do. Winning back his rights to his royalties probably influenced his decision. Anywho Tony Levin was on top form equipped with Salmon 5-string MM and his 4-string with 'Three of a Perfect Pair' paint job. And his stick and EUB (Steinberger?). Well done all concerned...
9. Hi all, Anyone tried one of these yet? Looks like a good blend of tone shaping and housekeeping all in a single unit. http://www.isptechnologies.com/portfolio/beta-bass-preamp-pedal/ And here in review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J7UiDQQBWQ
10. Tasty...
11. Am I missing something? Did JE play or own this? (somehow justifying the 5-digit price?)

14. I'd recommend Allan Holdsworth latest track 'Earth'. Killer Jimmy Johnson solo on one of his Alembics... Note, you'll have to pledge to Allan's project but I think it will be well worth it when all the tracks are released... 15.
I'll pass on such frippery.
Did you see what I did there? Anywho, looking forward to the Manchester dates!!!!

21. I bet that'll be different. I caught Jonas years ago with the reformed Mahavishnu and then duetting with John McLaughlin. He used his double-neck Wal for that! He certainly was very sloppy by today's standards...
22. Ray - thanks for your response but we're beyond aesthetics now... It is what it is... me wanna try with a view to buy... Please tell me where you've seen one on UK soil...
23. Has anyone seen one of these in the flesh yet? I'm gassing for one but I'd like to try it first... ? Please let me know of any shop sightings...
24. Played Warwickhunt's Flashback years ago... very heavy! But interesting... Can't help thinking - get a through-neck for the sustain without the weight... but I know the NT changes the the natural compression a little over a bolt-on. Pretty rare bird these days...
25.
Go, Kevin. You have something exceptional on offer there, bro. Keep up the good work.
+1 Cracking!... Reminded me a bit of IOU album (in a good way). Must be good if Bilbo didn't say... 'it didn't swing...', or 'would be better on acoustic bass', or 'not enough beards' or 'more elbow patches' p.s. Preston, Glasgow and Lowestoft sounds like the worst tour schedule imaginable.
