I think I may have to miss this one for economic reasons. Huge thanks to @Richard R and @Mottlefeeder for their kind offers of assistance. If, as I hope, my economic and employment ducks are more aligned, I will make it to the November meet in Crowthorne

Mods, please can we move this to Repairs & Technical?

When I have one of these mystery faults, I plug in and wiggle each little part or connection until I get closer to the fault. Methodical trial and error to find the bad connection is the way to go. Keep us up to date, it's probably simple to fix but difficult to isolate.

Thank you so much for setting expectations well

Here we have a Fender Jazz Player five string bass (passive) in Polar White from 2019, currently with a matching white scratchplate. The sale will also include a tort coloured plate. This is a Mexican made guitar. I got this in a trade a couple of years ago, and since then I've used it at home only. I have recently got around to replacing the original bridge with a new aftermarket one, as the original was a bit discoloured. It was a straight drop-in replacement and works great. I use the bass with a Sadowsky pre-amp pedal which works superbly with it, and would be happy to include this with the sale for an extra £30. Everything is in great working order, and the condition overall is very good. It's been recently restrung with Ernie Ball Nickel Wound 45-130 strings. Reason for sale is simply that I've got too much stuff! Three things to be aware of: 1. There is a paint crack around one of the screws holding the neck on. It's been like that the whole time I've had the bass, and hasn't changed size or shape. I've included a pic below. 2. There are a few small dents in the finish at the bottom of the body - I've tried to capture these in a pic below. These cannot be seen from the front or obviously when playing it. 3. This bass was previously traded on this platform with another user who requested the trade be reversed after he encountered an issue with the truss rod, which I obviously accepted. I then had the bass checked out by a professional, who couldn't find anything obviously wrong. So I'm confident there's no issue there, I have checked it just now and it turns fine. I just wanted to state that for full transparency. Postage or pickup accepted, costs for the former would need to be covered by the buyer. I will have to check the case/gigbag situation later. Any questions just give me a shout.

Kudos 👏🏼 Love a well polished boot me 😉

£599 is about £1750 in today's money allowing for inflation. I'd buy a new one of these for £1750 from Overwater nowadays, but somehow I don't think that would be the asking price. High-end basses have got proportionately more expensive over the years especially lately.🙁

I need to get mine out of its case and check it's still alive 😖

Thanks. I'll try that out. The pots seem to be Ok when the pickup decides to work.

Of course, a lot of this is BS! I love a good P bass, I've got two and it is undoubtedly a classic bass sound. But other good bass sounds are available, it's just the fashion for the past however many years has been for a P bass. In the 80s and 90s, it was all about active basses and everyone was playing a Spector or a Warwick or whatever!

This is a process of elimination without being able to get hands-on. Run the soldering iron over the connections on the pickups. Just melt the solder and let it set again. Sometimes a dry joint develops. Are the pots OK? I fitted new CTS to a bass today and the "common" leg wasn't connected properly. This can happen with use too.

Ideal for sitting in the lounge while a guitard uses a Blackstar Fly or other small guitar amp.

I only know them because folk have mentioned them here, I certainly have no experience of them. However, aren’t a lot of, let’s say ordinary (I can’t think of a better word), bolt on neck basses basically bitsas? -

Went out on the dog walk and realised I was asking silly questions Does this fit more in the "third amp" category like the Yamaha th amps? My only amp is a eden combo that's 225watts, I was hoping for something smaller for house jams

Tommy Tedesco was a bit of a lad. There are different versions, I read that he didn't touch the guitar but just changed his playing position. It's a similar story to the "producer" switch on Lee Sklar's bass. It's not connected to anything, but if he's asked to change his sound he flips the switch and the producer is happy!!

Drop an e-mail off to Overwater and Chris should reply. Good luck - a fine instrument.

Things have changed now. Tommy Tedesco was part of the generation that created the reference sounds that today's producers want to recreate. These days, a producer might ask a guitarist to get the sound Tommy got when he made a guitar sound like a mandolin! Similarly, the producer wants a P bass sound on the recording, because that's what he thinks a bass sounds like. They don't care if you want to play your favourite bass, they want something like the bass used on sessions from the 60 / 70s, which may well have featured Tommy Tedesco on guitar!

@neepheid and I are now in Taunton. We'll be checking out the dodgy clubs, pubs and houses of ill repute til early hours or until one of us needs to get to bed, so around 2100 for me.
