Sorry if I misunderstood! No harm done. Its something I have had done (via a luthier) in the past so its obviously not so uncommon. Shimming the whole length of the neck will not alter the height of the action relative to the fingerboard I think, because its all one piece. All the shim will do is alter the height of the neck/ bridge block relative to the body wood, I think.

I sold Nick a 70s Jazz too. What a lovely guy he was.

I think we've all of us been here at some point, and it can apply to any part of our lives, not just bass In my case, learning other instruments whilst I've taken a long time off bass not only kept music as the main theme of my life (which it always has been) but also improved my bass playing no end when I came back to it

2 superb bass cabs In great condition, that have served me well but dont get used anymore and need a new home. Everything works without any issues, a couple of hex nuts missing off the back but can be easily replaced for pence if you really need to. Comes with 2 Hotcovers protective covers worth over £100. Would be interested in a trade for a Fender Mustang Bass. Specs Ashdown ABM 410H 600w 8ohm Ashdown ABM 115 300w 8ohm

I look at it this way … I used to own an mgb it went wrong more often than you’d expect when the fuel pump went I bought a new & better one. I didn’t seek a rebuild of the exact fuel pump it started life with. It had lasted well, but was frankly a bit rubbish. Theres no use in pretending that every “old” bass was made perfectly with components that were functionally perfect and that the whole thing emitted magic sparkles unless changed, whereupon it became as lifeless as the worst 70s Kay I didn’t add a whale-fin spoiler to it and in the same vein I’d never re-fin an old bass. It is irreversible it still looked like an mgb and if it had optical ignition rather than clunky old points, no one will know. In the same way, it doesn’t matter if a volume pot has been replaced with a modern version of the same thing. Keep the old one for those of the potential buyers who might care, and use something better for you in your time owning it. No one truly gives a toss about original, unmolested solder joints. 🤷

It's usually a mystery as to where they've been before, sometimes we get a bit of an anecdote, or info on the immediate previous owner. Full history is usually not available. With my '73 Jazz, which is very heavily worn, I bought it from BassBros, but Nick (@oldhorsemurphy RIP) contacted me as he'd only just sold it to them. He told me how long he'd had it, and where he bought it. He'd bought it from the original owner, who was responsible for ALL the wear on that bass. He must have played it every day since 1973!

More likely they’re making them in batches and not rushing ‘all hands on deck’ to this one unit over their normal production schedules. I mean they should but…

Chienmortbb started following Does Size Matter? Is 8” Big Enough?
-
Of course I am talking of woofer size on full range tops. Long post so take a rest or tea break at regular intervals. I started thinking about this a while ago when @Phil Starrand I were working on my 8” extension cab. This was to complement my modified Ashdown After Eight combo. To cut a long story short, I started thinking about this in earnest when my band borrowed @Phil Starr‘s RCF Art 310As. Now I already had a pair of Whatfedale Pro Titan 12s plus two aging JBL 15” Subs. All were active and worked well together. However the performance of the smaller 10s in the RCF and the 8” speakers in my cab (the inspiration for the Basschat Easybuild 8” Cabinet) made me think (insert snide comments here). I knew from the 8” cabinet that a good 8” driver could go low enough and flat enough to work down to the point where a sub woofer could take over the heavy lifting. Indeed recent active speaker models from RCF, Wharfedale and others have offered extended frequency response and what RCF call FIRPhase Whatfedale call just FIR. They both aim to maintain phase alignment at the crossover point between the woofer and tweeter. They offer 127/128dB max SPL peak (122/123dB real life) and the response extends below the 100Hz area where most subs take over. As I said earlier, I had used the RCF 310As (MK2?) and was impressed, so my initial thought was a pair of RCF Art310A MK4. A they are discontinued, and RCF did not make a MK5 10”version, I ordered a pair from my neighbourhood German Music Store. Thomann had bought RCF’s remaining stock of the MK4 but all was not well. One was DOA so they both went back and a refund was offered. So, I looked around and Whatfedale Pro had added FIR technology to their Typhon Range. Although Whatfedale are now Chinese owned, the UK Arm still seems to do the R&D and like RCF, they make their own drivers. I love my Titan 12s so after much discussion I bought the Typhon 8 AXF and first impressions are favourable. The sound is well balanced and at just over 10Kgs reassuringly heavy for an 8”. Testing is ongoing and I will update later.
