I have an ALU212 which is a breeze to carry to gigs. Functional unit. -
Getting a first bass you like and get on with and actually want to pick up and play can be a key factor in whether you end up sticking the course when you first start learning. It sounds like for the OP that's the Ibanez. Any bass at any price point can develop fret buzz, generally if it happens it'll be down to envrionmental factors and it can almost always be fixed pretty quickly and inexpensively either by a tech or by the player with the help of a couple of youtube vids.

Both pick and fingers for me. I never use the ultra low. Yes, great heads. Not only do they sound glorious when pushed--they look as good as they sound.

I have one of those as well--to go with my 212. Fantastic head when pushed and the tubes start compressing. Sweet! Problem for me is I never need t be that loud. My V-4HB sounds different. Bigger and smoother, whereas the V-4b AV is brighter and has more mids (both being flat). The old BH has the same pre as as SVT, the new (old old) v-4bs are a little different.

Hi All, Anyone know of a company or one man in a shed that can make a custom thumb rest that mounts to the screws holes of the pickguard of a Rickenbacker 4001V63? I ordered the standard one from Retrovibe (ThumbChum) and then found out it doesn't fit, also checked with RickySounds before buying theirs and they've confirmed it won't fit. Whilst I can manage without, it would be nice to have one.

Just want to chime in on the Fender play sub. Ignore that and sign up to sbl instead. I wish I was a beginner again just so I could learn from their content. Buy the bass that feels good. I’ve owned too many basses but my Fender stuck around because it was the only bass I actually tried in a store before buying. Don’t make my mistake and just buy what your heroes play.

Ampeg Heritage 410. It was more money but well worth it. I like Ampeg amps, but cabs are a mixed bag for me. Some like the classic 410HFL suck in my opinion. This one if fantastic. My Ampeg 212 is a great cab as well and would be my next favorite.

Brooks would be a good choice. I'd also recommend Grainger as Darren and Gavin are excellent, plus have an engineering background so making bespoke parts won't be a big deal. I'd also suggest looking at Waghorn. I got a quote for a 12 string from them just before I actually got a Hamer 12 string. Off the shelf, I'd get the Dug Pinnick Schecter. Avoid Gretsch as not only is it stupidly expensive it uses a 4 saddle bridge. Good luck with intonation. -

I would agree with @neepheid and that may is doing an awful lot of work here. All of the comments are spot on. We have different basses for all sorts of reasons but often just because we want to. Nothing wrong with that.

Well-used 250w combo with 115 speaker. It’s a bit battered; the vinyl has some small tears; the corner protectors are missing from the top (but the bottoms are in place); the post/pre DI button is missing. But it sounds great and only weighs 17kg! -
Use of the word "may" noted and approved. But we're getting ahead of ourselves here.

There's a saying, "Buy your second bass first", ie don't buy a beginner bass because you will outgrow it in no time and have to buy a better bass. Buy that better bass first. Looks like your budget is around £200. if you can squeeze £500 out of the wallet you'll have a much better choice of basses. Pick wisely and you may never have to buy another bass.

Line 6 HX Stomp XL, selling due to downsizing my board. It's in pretty good nick, it's spent the majority of its time on a pedalboard in a protective case. It currently has some custom and purchased presets on it, but I can reset it back to factory if preferred. It comes with velcro on the back, the rubber feet are in the box. Located in Devon. Insuring basses is a pain, so I insure myself. My boxes are bombproof so I'll stand any losses. I haven't had to payout so far. -
Get the bass that makes you smile when you look at it, not the one that makes you wish you got the other! ...or do what the rest of us do and buy both 🙂 (borrowing money if necessary), accepting that it's a disease with no cure!

For sale or trade: 2013 Fender Nate Mendel Road Worn Precision Bass. Hey SSG's, As I predicted, this one is not long for my stewardship, which is a pity, as it's got an almost nuclear punch to it with the standard Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickup set. But at the end of the day, I'm a Jazz bass player, as opposed to a Precision bass player, and the chewy punch of my Aguilar equipped '95 Stingray is capturing all of my attention at the moment. 'Nathaniel' here has been set up beautifully with a low action curved to the 7.25 radius of the fingerboard, currently running on 40-95 Elixirs, so it's a dream to play. Comes complete with a seriously thickly padded old gig bag (pictured). This is one of the early Mendel Signatures with the original BadAss II bridge. If you haven't played one of these before, they're a big favorite of people with either small hands or classical technique, as the nut width is 1.615", so not far off a Jazz neck. There's no point in me pointing out dings and marks, as it was RoadWorn from the factory, and I've not added any more dings to it. It's actually quite a nice subtle job, with aged maple parts and metal hardware. The nice part is that you can see the gold undercoat underneath it, as if it's a well gigged refinish. £925, or make me a sensible cash/trade offer with a little extra money going either way. Buyer to collect, or will meet at a reasonable 75-100 miles from Derbyshire DE7.-

I don't know either of those basses, but as you are just starting out. . . . play as many basses as you can get your hands on. You need a bass that sounds good and feels great to play. Worry about looks at some time in the future. Now you just want to buy a bass that is going to inspire you to play. Good luck.
