Far be it for me to identify the culprit here, but based on my own experience with a certain retailer whose premises would fit perfectly into your '90 mins' journey-time, I'm not at all surprised. 'Nuff said.

Just observing that deposits aren't illegal as such. I can't offer a judgement on your situation as I'm mot an expert.

Just for the record, I bought something like 30 years ago a quite heavy Revox reel tape recorder that arrived completely destroyed as it was simply put in the thinnest cardboard ever... I never got any refund.

Emergency amp needed: Advice on options please.
lemmywinks replied to Marvin's topic in Amps and Cabs
Mis-sold as a newer version, missing accessories, shoved in a random box with no packing so turns up faulty and they want you to record a little video for them? Link them to the thread. -
Looda started following Custom Gregory Preamp GBP3 3 band - 5 knobs

Hi Folks, I am selling this custom GregoryPreamp cream GBP3. All prewired! It will be a matter of soldering the pickups and you are good to go! It's mostly custom because a tone knob working in both active/passive has been added compared to what comes standard. If you compare the frequencies to an Aguilar OBP3, they are very close. Punch, Loud, Lots of tonal options. This will make your Low B sound like you haven't heard it before. Because I am nice , I am including a sound clip (which most people don't do) It's a 5 knob config (see picture) Volume active passive push pull Tone control working in both passive and active mode Blend bass 40Hz +/-18dB (stacked with treble) treble 6.5kHz +/-18dB (stacked with bass) mid +/-12dB 400Hz/600Hz/800hz frequencies switched by microswitch inside the cavity An additional microswitch enables the emulation mode of a 5m Fender cable, which allows you to change the character of the sound of the pickups. An additional +10 dB Gain trimmer inside the cavity Wired 18v (2x9v) Funk.wav

That’s a big chunk of non refundable deposit there walshy isn’t it
-
Got home from work. Set it up again. Nothing in either passive or active input, the needle doesn't move at all and no sound. Tried with the mute in and out, nothing. Tried connecting through the fx return. Nothing. Also tried bridging the fx loop, still nothing. The cab must be working because when you push the mute button in, you get a pop. Also the first dew notches of the master volume you get a crackle. I'm am very angry at this. It's faulty, the packaging was abysmal, it was described as an EVO II its not it's an EVO I, and it said it had the carry bag which it hasn't. And I have to provide evidence of the fault.

That's a shame. Mike has been ok to deal with for me. I've met him a couple of times, and when I bought my first vintage Precision from him, he knocked a good chunk off the price without much haggling at all. I still have that bass, and still really like it. Rob

Same here with a guitar shop 90 mins from me, had 2 basses I wanted to buy, about £5k, asked for a £1k non refundable deposit to hold them. I explained I was happy to pay a deposit, would drive straight to him and if they were as described would buy them both and if not I’d like the money back. He point blank refused and needless to say I didn’t travel up. They were still for sale 2 months later…

I guess that means you need to define what a typical 5 is. I mean my rick 5 is exactly the same width as the rick 4, wheras my typical 5s are between 60mm and 70mm at the bridge where I know a lot of people have crazy wide basses that are almost 60mm for just the 4 strings. I really don't believe that your hand manages to fail to work properly with 10mm extra width.
-
I understand all that. I’m 100% certain the deposit would have been refunded if I’d gone to the shop and decided it wasn’t for me, but I didn’t like the way it was handled and the suggestion I was a timewaster or somehow not trustworthy. It was enough for me not to buy the instrument.

OK I've decided on a little demo/shootout for the SW Bash. We've never done a proper blind test before, because we've never managed to totally hide the speakers This time I've realised my band's banner is big enough to hide a good number of speakers so I can re-purpose it and do a properly blind test. I won't say more because then it wouldn't be a fair test

I guess there's always a possibility that a deposit is taken to remove an item from sale, the potential purchaser delays for whatever reason, then asks for the deposit back. The retailer has then lost days or maybe weeks when they could've made a sale.

12 String 16 series Martin guitar for sale. It was made in 2005 and I bought it in 2015 from Fellowship of Acoustics in the Netherlands. It’s a lovely guitar in both sound and to play. There are a few references to the guitar on the web people say how nice it is to play and I can confirm this. In the 10 years I have had it it’s been gigged twice and taken to less than half a dozen rehearsals. It developed a crack in the lower side of body of about 25mm quite early on. It did not increase in size as it was next to the cross bracing. I have had this repaired by a professional luthier a few months ago (details are available) and I have pictured this repair. He also set the guitar up and fitted Martin strings. There is also a ding on the bottom of the guitar. Six years ago I had an LR BAGGS Element VTC Micro Piezo fitted by a local guitar shop. It is an under saddle/preamp jack with volume and tone controls. It comes with the OHSC which is very clean. Specifications: Body Shape: Jumbo Finish: Natural Dimensions: Width: 407 mm - 16.02" Depth: 123 mm - 4.84" Body Material: Solid Mahogany Top Material: Solid Sitka Spruce Bracing: Scalloped Hybrid Bracing. Tortoise Pickguard, Black Binding, Herringbone Rosette Neck Material: Mahogany Neck Profile: Soft V Fingerboard Material: Richlite Fingerboard Radius: 16" Neck Details: Dot Inlay, Rosewood Headstock Overlay Nutwidth: 47,5 mm - 1.88" Scale Length: 645 mm - 25.4" String Spacing: 59 mm - 2.32" Bridge: Richlite Tuners. Price includes insured delivery although if you want to collect/meet up within 50 miles of Hull I can knock the delivery price off. You can see the actual guitar being demo’d by FOTA here:

It’s a nice answer but I’d say it’s as worthless as a “sold as seen” notice in a shop (ie you’d have a very good chance of getting all the cash back in court). The deposit should relate to the potential losses a company light face. In this instance. I’d argue the losses were negligible. I also felt the deposit terms (10%) was too much.
