  2. Hi In my quest for the best "always on" overdrive the bass tube screamer has come to my attention. As someone who always boosts a good 10db on my low and high mids I think this pedal could be a good fit however I hadn't to admit that when it comes to pedals I am a cheapskate and I just cannot bring myself to spend the £160 asking price, is there anything that sounds like a tube screamer for less money than this that doesn't lose low end ?   3. A Bass Collection Bruce Thomas in faded Fiesta Red (sold for some reason as "salmon pink"). Build quality is fantastic. Its in very good condition with some slight tarnishing on the pole pieces and various screws. There is a small thumbnail sized indent on the side of the body (see pic). Sounds awesome but for some projects I need 5 strings and so I've decided to standardise on them. There's a cover that goes over the bridge which I prefer not to use as I Iike to mute strings with my right hand. Weight is 4.3 Kg (9 1/2 pounds in old money). For £20 I can include a generic case that is in very good nick, although I don't have a key for the lock. I can meet up in London or West Kent/East Sussex for a £10 contribution to travel expenses or buyer pays and arranges courier (and assumes the risk).
  4. Been asked a couple of times about the neck profile (which - being Fender Japan - isn't a traditional 60s US profile, despite the model name!) Its 1.65 inches (42mm) wide at the nut, so its basically close to the modern P bass (1970s onward; 1.625 or 1.65 inches) in nut width rather than 1950s and 1960s style 1.75 inches (44.45mm). The blurb says its U shaped (see below) and it definitely is more of a handful than my Jazz bass depth-wise (I will measure later). The finish on the rear of the neck is not thick gloopy varnish so its easy to slide around from position to position without getting 'caught'.
  5. My Ashdown Labs MK500 head is now surplus to requirements and needs a new owner who can appreciate its capabilities. I bought this from another basschatter and its served me well and been faultless in operation since I've owned it. For those not in the know, this is the special edition UK made Mark King 500 watt head based around the ABM power stage but with a 12 band graphic EQ. It also has a couple of unique features in a low noise XLR input and an 'enhance' knob that basically brightens the tone in a way not found on other Ashdown amps, a bit like a super presence control. The paintwork is in i'd consider very good condition. There are some minor paint scratches and marks from being in a rack over time, but none since I've owned it. It was kept in a pro rack case all the time i've owned it. Has only been gigged a handful of times and did most of its work in a studio enviroment as its beautifully quiet in operation, and the low noise input and DI out work extremly well together for recording or PA use. Everything works as it should and the controls are smooth and crackle free. The cooling fans operate all the time when its powered on but are remarkably quiet for such a powerful amp. It's rated 500 watts RMS @ 4 ohms and will power just about any sort of cab or combination of cabs down to 4 ohms safely. It's quite a clean and crisp sounding amp and quite unlike the slightly grungey tones that you can get from ABM's. I'm in central Scotland and would prefer collect in person so a buyer can try it out first. Tea and biscuits at no extra cost! I may consider posting the unit as long as the buyer can arrange their own courier and insurance. It would be well packaged in bubble wrap and good quality packaging.   6. In that case, I'll bring that. It's a curious bass as I had it made so you can use it either stereo or mono. Much like a Rickenbacker or Series Alembic. It's not as hard to play as some people might think if you put your arm on the wing a la John Entwistle as I am in the photo. I kind of didn't want to bring an instrument that you couldn't buy anymore (like the Status buzzard or Warmoth 8 string Explorer) and as Grainger will make that for you if you wish, it seems like the best way to go.

I'd have to suggest the same thing, the best speaker for that enclosure would be the one that Markbass designed it for, Failing that then if you can take measurements of the internal enclosure volume and any port areas and lengths then someone might be able to suggest a suitable replacement. matching cabinets to speakers is a science and getting it wrong will at best just sound bad and at worst damage the new driver. I made the mistake of buying some speakers with the intention of building some cabs without doing enough research beforehand and ending up with completely the wrong speakers and no chance of building a suitable cabinet that would fit in the space i had.   14. The price keeps dropping! However, this is the last drop. If it doesn’t sell I’ll re-advertise later in the year and hope the market has improved.
  15. I love Metallica, but Lars' drum sound is horrendous. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't always mixed to be the lead instrument.

  19. Looking back at the few videos I took for my son, Rex's bass was only really audible during Planet Caravan. Robert Trujillo was cutting through the mix nicely though, even with the loud kick drum.
  20. 2 outdoor gigs in North London for me yesterday. First gigs on bass for quite a while. First was at the Heath street festival in Hampstead. Nice stage and good sound. I had my new preamp with me but didnt use it at either gigs. First gig was with an Ampeg combo. Really nice sound. Quite tempted to get one at some point. It did rain a bit but that didnt seem to deter the crowd and we were covered. Second was in a private estate in Highgate. We were supposed to have a proper stage but it turned out to be a Gazebo with a small raised playing area. No side protection at all. Of course, the heavens opened up as we were approaching to set up. Again, backline was supplied so this time i used MB 3x10 combo. I had planned on using a preamp with this, but looking at the extension socket, filled with rain, I decided I wasn't going anywhere near it. Again, decent sound, which did surprise me as ive never been a fan of MB cabs. Highlight was when the sound guy turned the supplied Tube driven guitar combo on and a firework display emerged out the back of it. Apparently due to the tube being hot, a tiny drop of cold rain had shattered the glass. Guitarist ended up going DI from hisHelix Stomp. We had a really good sound though. Thoroughly enjoyed both gigs. What also struck me was how easy it was setting up. Never needed any effects, didnt even miss not using a preamp etc.

  22. I thought the bass was surprisingly well-represented throughout. Mike Inez's Warwick/Fishman sounded incredible. It was only really Rex who suffered.
  23. I agree with Lozz on this, another recommendation for the Keeley Bassist, I've struggled with compressors, tried different ones but this is the easiest to use and gives you a great even sound.

  27. So i picked up an old UK made ABM 300 Evo II (not the one i linked above, i found one for much less). Thing sounds great but there is a constant buzz, even when my bass is turned right down or even with nothing plugged into the input at all. If i plug into the Effects return the amp is silent. Im assuming that means the issue is in the pre-amp section? **update, i think its the jack. With nothing plugged in there is a buzz and if i touch the metal washer on the input jack the buzz gets much louder**
