  1. Hello all, I want to make a Jazz Bass neck for a Fender Precision from the late 70's. I have already bought the neck, from Allparts, and it needs to be painted. The body clearly shows that it has been around for about 40 years, so I also want to make the neck look a bit old. I want to paint the neck with nitro, aerosol cans of this are widely available and it doesn't seem like rocket science to me. The result does not have to be like a Fodera and I have some experience with spraying, sanding, polishing etc. There are many videos on how to proceed and what is needed, but I am still wondering whether I should finish with a satin nitro or high gloss nitro. The result in terms of shine and feel that I want to achieve is that of the Road Worn Fender series. I have a JMJ Mustang which neck I really like to play and also think it looks nice. Is it a matter of applying a high-gloss finish and simply not polishing it completely? Or should a semi-gloss varnish be applied followed by a bit of polishing? Does anybody have experience with this? See the bass in this topic from a fellow bassist for an example: Thank you in advance!
  2. Thanks for your responses. It appears, after some more research, that the electronics are original. Bad soldering job from the factory I think. The three way switch works a lot better after a dose of contact spray so I'll keep it that way!
  3. Hi everyone, Earlier this week I became the owner of this Fender Jazz Bass Special from 1985, I had wanted a bass like this for some time and this one came my way. In good condition for its age, but the three-way pickup selector is showing signs of wear, I will have it replaced. It looks like it has been replaced before, given the melted sleeve of the wires attached to it. The entire switch doesn't seem original to me, it only fits into the space sideways. The TBX tone control works well but does not seem original, given the size of the potentiometers. The two volume pots are much larger. The values of the resistors and capacitor seem to be OK, but I don't know whether they are original. There is also some melted sleeve there. My question is: could someone who has the same type of Jazz Bass Special post a photo of the untouched control cavity? Then I can do some comparative work. I've searched the internet but couldn't find a photo of this. I didn't buy the bass as a collector, so i do not have a problem with replaced electronics, but I'm just curious. And the pickup selector must be replaced anyway, preferably with something that resembles the original. Thank you in advance! Pictures of the situation in my bass below.
  4. Thank you all for replying! The pickup was indeed in the bridge position, the original precision pickup was also still in it. The body has had a DIY refin, I will have it restored to its full glory. The hole for the J pickup will then be filled. I will also ask the local specialist/luthier if he has an idea about the origin of this pickup. If he does, I'll post it!
  5. Hi everyone, I got this pickup with a Precision Bass from 1978, the well-known modification. According to the previous owner, it was put on the bass in the 1980s. I wonder if anyone can tell what brand this pickup is. The pole pieces are copper/gold colored, the casing is cream colored, both wires are wrapped in brown shrink tubing and the coil is wrapped with copper foil. If anyone has an idea, I'd love to hear it! Cheers!
  6. I had the melted foam as well under the pick-ups of my ‘75 Jazz Bass. Googled the situation, could’t find anything about it and now i see it here. Does anybody know what causes this?
