Is this a one-size-fits-all device? If so, I don't see how it can work. Valves need varying voltages, circuits, biasing, etc. You can't usually just substitute one type for another.

Big warning to anyone who finds this thread and thinks "I'll do that!". I've had to put the old standard pick back in. Even with the pickup completely decked to the body, the magnet field strength is so strong that I'm getting fret buzz almost everywhere on fretboard. The magnets are pulling the strings down towards it, causing fret buzz. I've switched back to the original pick up and the problem has disappeared... You've been warned! Anyone wanting to juice this pickup... install a steel bass plate or something. Don't put N38s in it!

If I manage to get to the shop when it's open and it's still there I might just pick it up.

IIRC the song ‘Footsee’ is generally regarded by true Northern Soul fans as being a bit naff and subsequently doesn’t appear in many band’s repertoires who specialise in the genre. I remember it being released when I worked in record retail and even then it was considered too ‘poppy’, but at least it introduced many to the delights of NS. ‘Wigan’s Chosen Few’ was the band credited on the label, but I believe it had it’s roots in an earlier recording from the 60’s.

series/split/parallel but with a DPDT on/on switch and a pot...?
Danage replied to Danage's topic in Repairs and Technical
Quick update... have done the mod. In the end, I set up the blend only for the series configuration. So the pot isn't doing anything when the switch is up in parallel. I just need to move one wire to a different lug on the switch, should I wish to change it... On the bass in question (Warwick Streamer Standard - one of the old single-pickup German made ones), the star of the show is having the blend _almost_ all of the way off, so that a bit of the back coil is being added to the front coil. This stops it getting too thin, in the way that a split humbucker can sometimes be. It works pretty good as a mid-cut. I'm a fan! Possibly the more sensible thing to do is just to do the coil tap via fixed resistor (or internal trim pot?), to allow the desired amount of second coil to bleed in consistently. I think this is how PRS do their coil taps. A word of warning - I only had an audio taper pot with a push-pull. A linear taper would definitely be preferable. Too much of the blend is bunched up at one end of the travel. The parallel option is more different from the single coil sound than my experience has taught me to expect... This could be because the coils in the pickup housing have some distance between them - there's enough space inside the pickup for a third coil between the standard two. So maybe parallel is sounding a bit more different than it usually does to a single coil sound as it is "listening" to a wider stretch of string by more than what a standard humbucker does in parallel. -

An idea that seems all too obvious after someone else has had it But very interesting 👍

I have the Lekato WS-80, and have been using them for a few years now. No good for active basses as you get a high frequency whine when in circuit. if you switch to passive it immediately stops. Be interested to know which of the newer models have got rid of this problem. Battery life has been superb and they've been solid otherwise.

I do remember that one too yes!

I've a fond spot for those threads which provide an answer to a question that wasn't asked, always entertaining

I disagree with this. Phones have enabled more people to take more pictures. You still need a good eye to take a good photo. Same with mixing desks. More people have more power and more control at their fingertips if they still have cloth ears, the results will be even worse than simple treble and bass control. See the recent Sound Engineering Guitarist thread.

Flightcase/cable trunk - relining.
casapete replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Repairs and Technical
I’d say whatever option is cheapest! If you have access to some foam offcuts that’s probably best, especially the dense black type. However, some roll end cord carpet would do the job, although will weigh more than the foam option if that’s an issue. I did a case in this ages ago and used rather smelly but strong carpet adhesive and it was fine. Easy to hoover out too. -
Fantastic bass never had a Short Scale before , thanks very much Ash

I wasn’t aware of that one but I see it has a 42mm nut, which is too wide for me. Otherwise looks very interesting. Somewhat in the mold of the Watt Plower II with the pickup configuration. That leaves me still gassing after the Warwick Starbass (bit cheaper too). Hard to get hold of though. Anyway enjoy your new acquisition. It looks the business.

A soundcheck is essential when the person mixing is also playing, because it's nigh on impossible to fix things on the fly or even hear if anything is amiss unless it's really obvious or glaring. As others point out, it should be brief (no noodling, practicing in public, etc). If there are people in the venue, I set up individual channels on cans, then play a swift burst of a recording I'm familiar with through the PA to check the FoH sound. Then we announce that we're doing a soundcheck, the band plays and I have a quick walkaround (playing via my wireless) to check all's well and make any adjustments needed. Only takes a few minutes. Better that than trusting to luck.

Just like some Mesa Boogie's, called Dual Rectifier for a reason. 😉

The Seymour Duncan Convertible combo had the option of a solid state or tube rectifier, which may be what you remember, @Dood
