greghagger started following Who Played Bass On Pet Sounds?

Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is a really iconic album that I love and have been dipping into over the last few months. As I found out last week when transcribing, 'God Only Knows', Carol Kaye was not the only bassist on the album and even some of the bass lines played with her classic combo of muted pick and P-Bass were in fact played by Ray Pohlman. Then there is the interesting topic of the Danelectro bass to throw into the mix… There's even upright bass on a lot of the tracks and you might be surprised to find out who else features in the bass lines. In my latest YouTube video, I discuss the bass parts of Pet Sounds and demonstrate some of the more interesting bass lines. Ultimately, as I said last week, we'll never know 100% who played what on every track, but it's a fun journey to explore! Free transcription link under the video in the description.

I guess this is the dilemma that we face. People on BC are very vocal about how wages should rise in the western economies. There are concerns that the west has a hollowed out manufacturing base. There are concerns about Russia and war. However nobody wants to pay extra for things made in the west. This makes for a very precarious work force and a potentially very vulnerable environment if war did kick off.

A modded 40 year old JV Precision hence the lower price. It has been routed for EMG PJ active pickups with a Jazz pickup at the bridge - a classic mod! The bass also has a countersunk Hi-Mass bridge. The bass weighs 4.3kgs and sounds and plays as a good PJ ought to. Classic JV quality in a lovely original fiesta Red finish. All hardware is original other than the mods. There are areas where the paint has been touched up near the neck pocket and bridge and the Jazz rout but nothing drastic. The mods are from the mid 80s when the bass was toured. At one point there was a switch that has since been removed and the hole on the original white scratchplate has a plastic cap over it. I’m selling my long scale basses that have no sentimental attachment owing to issues with my fretting hand. I’m not interested in trades other than shortscale Fender Mustangs or Stingrays. It has a gigbag and I would prefer pickup. Postage not impossible but at buyers cost and UK only. Thanks!

Origin DCX Bass in superb condition with box, all working as it should. Absolutely fantastic preamp/overdrive pedal with a touch sensitive feel to it. Goes all the way from pristine clean to gnarly and pretty savage! Beautiful build quality and super silent switching. Postage includes to a UK address.

He could well be, we'll never likely know. Nevertheless, the incident illustrates a point; MIA models are made on identical tooling, very often by staff from the Mexican plant. And conversely, you'll find the opposite, MIM models made on the same gear, often by murican staff, and signed off by the likes of Henry and Martin (on both of mine). The only real difference (other than the make of finishing kit on the real high end models) is the location. So what did the extra £600 get him beyond a geography lesson? Ultimately, nothing tangible. That £600 could have been spent on HBs, which was the point of the observation.
