Bassbooksbikes started following Hello from Somerset.

Hi Hello from Glossop and the High Peaks. Absolute beginner in my mid fifties. Wondering how many minutes a day I should be practising and how long it might take me to get some proficiency. My left fingers feel like sausages but been waiting a while to start playing. Just completed a Masters so now I have time to devote to this odyssey. Currently trying to play a Yamaha RBX 270, when in the right hands, plays beautifully.

I spent a week practicing ace of spades to get it up to speed for a low-key birthday bash, finally got it up to tempo and solid. Started playing and all was good, felt great, everyone kicked in and I realised I was in the wrong key… I'd been practicing it in EADG but decided to tune down to Eb as it felt better to play but totally reverted to playing it half a step down. Everyone was really drunk apart from me thankfully so don't think anyone noticed 🤣

I was depping last weekend. Played a very basic tune with bass coming in on F. I came in on C and played the riff in C. Embarassing. Especially as i think it was because I've been playing 4 string a lot recently and going back to my 5 string i simply got the string wrong. Such a basic and amateur mistake to make.

@Steve Browning That sounds like a good solution that will have the most positive effect on everyone concerned. It's tricky breaking up a band but it sounds like you found the right way to go about it.

Was in a band a few years ago. It became apparent that our set was beyond the vocal ability of the singer. After a tortures gig in which he murdered a few rock classics I sent an email to the band suggesting that it may be time to revamp the set and get some rehearsal time booked. Never mentioned the duff singing at all. In all fairness he was ok on about a third of the set. I got a message back suggesting that the band had played that set for years and were in no hurry to ditch anything. Also I was told don't reinvent the wheel and if I wasn't happy,I knew where the door was.... I sent one word back....SLAM!

Sire Marcus Miller Z7 4 String Bass in Natural for sale only. Had this up a few weeks ago but it`s not going to get used so just seeing if there is any interest at the new price. As I have no box it`s collection from Paisley or meet up. Here is a Sire Marcus Miller Musicman Stingray style bass for sale only. In exc condition it features a Sire Heritage 3 eq with a mid frequency control as well as bass, treble and mid control, it also has a passive option, tone control, 18 volt pre and blend control. MM style humbucking and J style pickups, through body stringing bridge, roasted maple neck with rolled fingerboard edges, ash body so it weighs 5 kg or 11 lbs. A very versatile bass especially for the price, it cost me £565 a few months back. Collection from Paisley only where you can try it out or meet up within reason.

If I remember correctly, it was Bill Lawrence's idea to start toying with an impedance changing switch. I need to check, but I'm quite sure I have some schematics somewhere... And I found the explanations from the guy himself, see below.

There’s nothing wrong with MIJ/CIJ Fender instruments. In general they are top notch for consistency. The 62 Jazz reissues are more common and therefore maybe more prone to modding than some models that are less common in Europe…..like the PB-70US. Remember that Japanese Fenders have various grades - typically denoted by a second double digit. Say, JB-62-75 where the first number refers to the model year of the reissue and the second set of numbers denotes the price (in 00’s Yen) when it first sold. The lower priced versions came with a smaller headstock and small footprint tuners, as well as locally specified PUP’s. The body wood may be Basswood (Linden), which is light but dings easily. Higher valued instruments have larger tuners (similar to US) on a typical Fender headstock. The body wood is typically alder or sen (ash). The PUP’s may be wound to US spec or imported US PUP’s. Hence the term US in PB-70US. Basically you will have to look far and wide for a bad MIJ Fender.

I don't use a plectrum for the different tone, I use it because the metacarpal of my right forefinger was broken when I was in my early 20s and it set with the knuckle perceptibly lower than the rest of my hand, so alternating between first and middle fingers is awkward and can get uneven - for some things I simply can't manage it with alternating fingers but can with a plectrum.
