As a confirmed Precision man of course I’m going to say yes. But rationally speaking, if you need that sound then yes, because although many basses will get near it, well it’s only near, not spot on. But if it’s just because, well because, then probably not.

I think they definitely can be, if you watch some of Sean Hurley’s videos his effortless playing and tone is just so good , I don’t think you’d get the same outcome if it wasn’t a P bass

Hey, I’m hoping some of you have modded G4M 972 basses and can share what worked well. Why I want to change the pickups: I like the feel of the bass, but the output is low and the sound could be improved. My plan: Remove the preamp and install new, preferably passive, pickups. I'd rather shape the sound with a preamp pedal or VSTs. Tone goal: I’m aiming for a “Dingwall Metal” sound. I already have a Darkglass preamp, a SansAmp, and various VSTs (Ampeg stuff by IK Multimedia and Plugin Alliance, NAM Profiles etc...). Main goal is recording, not live playing for now. I did some research but couldn't find much. Some installed a Darkglass Tone Capsule but since I have a Darkglass already I don't think this would help much. Any recommendations on pickups would be appreciated.

I tend to think that as long as no one has been ripped off (either the original seller, or a subsequent buyer) then there's no harm done. If both sides are satisfied with the asking price, then its a deal. If you're lucky enough to pick up a genuine bargain, which you sell down the line at a profit, then that's fine too. I've never had the money to buy, sell or own masses of gear anyway. I could probably count on one hand the number of real bargains I've had in donkey's years of playing. Most of them I've kept, and some I've sold on because I needed funds more than I needed that bit of gear. Most of the time I'm just aiming to avoid making too much of a loss on something I no longer need (which isn't always successful either!). But what happens to it after that, and how much someone else might want to sell it for in future etc is not in my control and none of my business really.

I don’t think you’ve spent enough time with one if that’s your opinion. Technique makes up for the lack of electronic sophistication.

Used to live in Berlin. Those were the days. Got a Sandberg Electra with Delano Noiseless PUs + new Preamp for 250. An Epiphone Casino for 150, SM57 for 30 € and so on. Now in London and it's not nearly as good. Saves money though

If you decide to go the DIY route, getting the panels pre-cut really makes the process easier (especially if you’re not fully tooled up). You can actually order MDF or birch plywood sheets cut to your exact size online — I’ve used MDF Direct before and the precision was spot on. Makes speaker builds a lot less stressful!

Of course it is... I clearly struggle to notice the difference between four tuner holes and six 🤦‍♂️ But I can appreciate that intonation could be vexing. Thanks for replying 👍

Took a quick lunchtime trip up into beautiful Northumberland to see local electronics wizard Dave Coates who diagnosed and fixed the issue in about five minutes. As suspected, one of the four legs of the volume pot board was loose in the main board. A quick whizz over with the soldering iron and she’s as good as new.

These are some of my favourite genres too, and agree that modern gear can do a reasonable version of that old school tone; but to my ears you need an old valve amp to get THAT sound. I use an early silver-face Fender Bassman 135 on a MusicMan HD115 ported cab, loaded with a JBL D140. This rig produces the best bass sound I have ever got by a country mile and a lot of people (incl. audience and other musicians) have said as much. The right bass is an important part of the mix too. You need a Fender P or J or a real MusicMan Stingray (the EB versions don't sound or play as good IMO). For recording I've run a line from the amp and a mic from the cab and blended the two signals to get THAT sound. I don't use any pedals either, as I want to keep the signal from bass to amp to speaker/desk as free of interference as possible. This really does make a huge difference! However good the pedal/s it/they still compromise the signal from the instrument. I sometimes run a Randall bright box on top of this rig too, for extra brightness and definition, and if I want to get the sound a bit phatter and dirtier, I jump the channels to use both sides of the preamp.
