  2. It's the one top notch bass all day long for me. My yardstick of quality is my US Stingray. The Stingray sound isn't for everything though, and I do like to mix things up to keep me interested but it's got a bit silly (6 basses, 4 amps, too many pedals...). One of my basses is a Harley Benton fretless jazz and it's great for the price, but it's not the same quality as a Sire or MIM Fenders. It's still perfectly giggable though and it does come out on gigs as a first choice instrument sometimes. But loads of cheaper options and no single great bass? No thanks. I don't see the point. As someone already mentioned there's the bonding and familiarity with your "number 1" bass, then the reliability, then forming your own sound, and I'd rather do that with one special bass than be constantly rotating multiple functional but not special instruments.
  3. And that's the difference between gig in the States and gigs here; it would have cost me 175 bucks to do the gig and I'd have had to have bought my own ribs!
  4. Don’t worry found a thread 🤪
  5. I would hope people still get the same sense of excitement about music that I did as a teenager. I learned about the Doors via Echo and the Bunnymen. From the Doors I listened to lots of 60s music leading to a love of the blues and country.
  6. I am about to show my ignorance so bear with. If you don’t have an amp or at least a monitor how do you hear yourself? I do own a Line 6 bass pod live and a couple of di pedals that will send a signal to the desk but I am still competing with a keyboard monitor, a guitar amp and mics with monitors plus a drummer. Is it a case of all go amp less or no one does plus ditch the drummer lol
  7. All of these are great suggestions. Would also be worth considering GK Legacy 800, Aguilar AG700, Bergantino Forte D (750W I think) or Forte HP2 )1200W).
  8. Vintage solid wood Hungarian bass in good playing condition. Sounds great & plays nicely. Recent work done has included a new handmade bridge, fingerboard plane & re-positioned soundpost. The neck has never been broken. All of the White is hand painted to make the bass really stand out. Comes with a slighy tatty but very useable hard styrofoam case on wheels.
  9. I would expect a fan of classic rock to be in their 50s or 60s. Jazz in their late 60s unless they're musicians. Classic and Opera wouldn't figure on that list would it. It would be well down the left hand side.
  10. I guess it depends whether the lyrics are viewed as a condemnation or celebration. Brown Sugar and Strange Fruit both had a major impact on me and lead to more research and learning when I was a teenager.
  11. Sorry all, but I am withdrawing this bass permanently. It’s probably the best sounding and most versatile bass I have owned and to top it off it’s unbelievably light. Thanks to those who have been in touch with offers of trades but it’s time to get off this blooming hamster wheel and to just get into playing more bass! cheers, Mark.
  12. There have always been s*** songs with s*** lyrics. This particular one - or something similar - gets wheeled out time and time again as an example of how bad/sordid/offensive (delete as applicable) modern music is, or strangely, in defense of older songs that were once totally acceptable but now seem a bit iffy. Regardless of your opinions of Brown Sugar, quoting a random contemporary lyric doesn't really justify or apologise for it. In years to come, will society look back at Nicki Minaj's lyrics and collectively shake it's head in a "what were we thinking?!" haze? Possibly. Maybe it'll just be seen as the meaningless rhythmic word salad that it is. There's nothing behind it. Brown Sugar is powerful, however you view it.
  13. I doubt that they were talking to fans of Jazz, Blues, Country, Classic Rock, Classical, Opera etc

  15. I’ve read the whole thread and am really surprised that no one has mentioned an Orange AD200 B mk3. I am not really qualified to join the thread as I have only ever owned 3 amps. Started with a Laney Linebacker, with hindsight poor, Currently a Fender Rumble 100 mainly for rehearsal and again not that good as I find the sound very ‘boxy’. Its redeeming feature is it is as light as a feather. But!!!!!! Orange AD200 B mk3 , what more could anyone want, simple to use, enough power to fill any room, fantastic tone. One I will never sell.
  16. Humbleton was a 5-8 acoustic gig. Over an hours drive in rural Wisconsin. We were in the middle of nowhere. Older brewery and family restaurant. The building must have been from the 60s. At first I thought it was going to be a dud. However, the dining room slowly filled up with several fantastic families. We were basically background music. The staff and owner were great. I got paid 100 bucks plus 75 dollars in tips. Before we left the owner gave each of us a rack of barbecue ribs. A fun evening and home safe by 10:00. Thumbs up. Daryl
  17. I’m contemplating one of these katana 2 x 10 ..I know there a A/B class im using the usual class d which I have at the moment in the shape of a GK Legacy 800 watt with a dark glass 2x 12 cab ..I play in 2 bands mainly smaller venues (pubs etc) some hard rock/classic rock/grunge/nu metal .. I barely get above 1/2 volume ..anyone got one and gigged it ?
  18. These amps are so good it’s untrue
  19. But what if tue best sounding bass - to your ear - was inexpensive? In terms of sound, tone, call it what you will, my modified HB is a match for some of my basses costing 15 times as much. Unlike items such as the standard of finish, the quality of the finishing kit, or simpky the prestige of the brand names embossed on the parts, etc, the relationship between pricce and sound is not a linear relationship. Indeed, the link between price and sound is so loose its downright bendy.
  20. I have a Tecamp Puma 900. Headroom for weeks. I settled on it mostly because I like the "Taste" control, and I use it at the "Rich" end of the dial. But I had someone try it out yesterday, more of a rock player and he set it flat and he loved it. At the bass bash a couple of weeks ago we directly compared my amp with the latest Eich T900, and we couldn't hear a difference. They are a good match with BF cabs too. Rob
