I was immensely lucky to have met him in New York back in 2013. I was only in my early 20s and myself and my girlfriend at the time went to Blue Note to watch Hiromi, really just to catch a glimpse of my bass playing hero. Afterwards I managed to sneak upstairs by the dressing room and got talking to Simon Phillips, who I will attest to this day as one of the nicest musicians I have ever met. After chatting for 10 mins or so, I asked whether AJ was still around. SP mentioned that he was famously shy but that he’d see what he could do. SP proceeded to put his head round the dressing room and explain that he had a really good friend from the UK over that he’d love to introduce. After ushering me in (what a cool bloke for doing that, will never forget it), I got introduced to AJ, who was sitting in this old battered armchair like some demigod. I’d had several cocktails and quite a few beers by this point, but I was dumbstruck and totally lost for words. He was immensely shy, but so generous with his time. I was a young lad so he seemed genuinely enthused by me knowing virtually everything he’d played on in the late 70s and early 80s. I was so very sad to learn of my favourite bass player’s passing today but I’m quite certain his legacy will live on for many years to come. He was to my mind the greatest bass player alive, unmatched and unrivalled - subjective I know but something I really do, did believe.

What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

I agree with all of this. I like the guys in Wunjos too. -
No I've really been bringing in my own strap. My wide Levys one. I've demoed too many basses in the past without them and I always play with one.

I left a band after 12 years which was past its sell by date. Not for a better offer but just because there was a lot going on in my life at the time and something had to go. I just explained my situation, agreed on which upcoming gigs i’d honour and that was that. All quite businesslike and no one got hurt. Predictably I got bored after about a month of doing nothing, and I started picking up solo guitar/vocal gigs instead. Also word then got around that I was available for bass dep jobs so I ended up even busier than before I’d quit. I think I’ve only fallen out spectacularly with one band (back in the day when we were all young and definitely going to be famous etc etc) which was quite a messy departure from all involved. Such is life eh.

It's a joke which came about from one of my own bands. I was discussing cymbals with my drummer and he said he had seen a Zildjian ride cymbal called "the megabell." Basically it had a hugely pronounced and exaggerated dome which I presume was designed that way so that it was impossible to miss. When he told me what it was called, I burst out out laughing saying that it sounded like a great insult. "That guy's not a bellend, he's a f@&*ing megabell!" In that they have transcended the normal level of bellendry to a higher lofty plain that us mere mortals will never attain.

Fun is mostly for when I'm playing with other musicians, though that's been off recently. When it's just me I like to go into the zone. It's like running or going to the gym - those have never been fun but I've been doing it consistently for the last 25 years because it's satisfying and I miss it when I don't do it.

AJ was quite involved in the early days of Bass Player USA He had some forceful opinions I was able to read and contemplate his thoughts and apply or try them in various musical situations He was a Principled Ideas man

Must take a moment to say how good the team are in GuitaGuitar in Camden. Really helpful, not pushy. Also, in my experience, Andertons have been great and so have The Bass Gallery and Bass Direct. Been very happy to put money their way over the years. -

Just swap the saddles - but make sure they are the correct thread - Fender USA likely Imperial, others Metric. I swapped out the Chrome for Brass on my HB50 Modder.
