12" Cabs

I recently bought a Marshall DBS7400, but don't yet have proper bass cabs to use with it. I've played it through one of my PA Cabs (15" + 8" + Tweeter) and the sound is montrous, even though its an 8ohm cab and the amp is designed to deliver its 400Watts into 2 ohm.

Anyway, I seem to really like the sound of 12" cabs (more than 10s and more than 15s), and have been looking around for something suitable. There was a Marshall 4x12 cab going (7412), but this was montrously heavy (74 KG - almost 11 Stone!) and even then was only 4 ohm so still not getting the max out of the amp.

So what I'm ideally looking for is a 2 x12" 4 ohm cab, able to take 200 - 300 watts continuous, with very high peak capability (The DBS 7400 can peak at 4000W into 2 ohm)

Then I want another one exactly the same so that I can have one on its own, or 2 stacked to give me a 2 ohm 4x12 4-600 watt continuous rig, according to the requirements on the night.

I'm guessing that two 2x12s would be a lot easier to handle than one 4 x12, and would also allow me to phase my expenditure. Also being 2x12's it wouldn't have to be lightweight stuff and hence might be cheaper.

Marshall themselves used to do '7212' cab, 400W at 4 ohm, wighing in at 32Kg each, so a couple of these might be ideal, but I've never seen one for sale.

Anyone got any suggestions (I haven't got a huge budget)

Thanks in advance

Clive.

Aguilar 12" cabs are great. But really, driver diameter isn't a determining factor in sound. Bass cabs with 12s have a tendency to sound better as it is a bit unusual so it is often nicer cabs featuring 12s, better designed than cramming a 15 or 4 10s in a box so it looks right.

Never been impressed with any Marshall bass cabs though.
EBS Neoline 212.

Best cab ever. Light. 600w. Amazing tweeter. Sounds fantastic. 4ohm.

Problem solved!
Thanks for your quick reply. I'm sure that they're great, but just looked them up and 'ouch' - £800 worth of ouch (new), and the aquilar 'equivalent' is £700. They're probably worth every penny, but I don't have that many pennies at the moment.

Congrats on the DBS, I`ve just got hold of one of those too - awesome amps.

I put it through a Marshall VBC 412, which weighs abt 50kg - still not the lightest cab in the world, but it sounds amazing through this. And, being a 4ohm cab, I can add another although having played a regular size pub, and having had the gain on 5, and volume on abt 3, I can`t really see a point where I`d need it. They`re abt £500.

Think if I were looking at 2x12s, I`d try out a Barefaced - really like the look of them, again, abt £500.

I would buy used if you can.

If you're into 12's, the BFB Super Twelve looks like a great cab. Do you really need 4 12's? You could start collecting Aguilar GS112's or DB112's. 3 of them would sound pretty good with your amp.

Apologies in advance for a massively shameless plug here, but I have a EBS Proline 2x12 4 ohm cabinet in the for sale thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=97033

They are amazing cabs, very clear, very punchy and despite not being Neo cabs are much lighter than anything else I have owned and no hassle to move on your own. For some reason you can pick up the Proline cabs quite cheap as everyone goes for the Neo. Its a shame because they are Incredible good and if you want another cab to go with it, I think Bass Direct have a few other cabs in the Proline series available used.

Good luck with your search.

I have a couple of Barefaced cabs (Big One and Compact) and if these are anything to go by (and I hear the Super Twelve is a MONSTER) I am willing to be that, although they maybe £600 a pop, you will only ever need one. Alex at Barefaced will let you try one for a month for the cost of postage too.

If you're not dead set on a brand new cab, I'd recommend, if you can find one, an SWR Bigfoot - nicer than any other 2x12" I've tried since and fairly lightweight. There's some kind of special alchemy at work with those cabs, and the fact that they're loaded with Bag End speakers helps a lot, too.

Thanks for all your thoughts so far chaps.

I'm not at all set on buying new, in fact, on principal, I was assuming that I'd be buying second hand!
I haven't got a specific budget in mind - it's not so much what I can afford, but how much my level of ability/activity justifies. £200 would not be a problem £600 would be too much. It would be so much easier to justify if the band was gigging regularly and earning small amounts of money.

The ideas you've suggested gives me something to think about, both performance wise and whow much I'll need to spend, so thanks.
