Just joined a 6 piece band (including myself). Two guitarists have Marshall stacks but I wouldn't say the band are overly loud. They do pop and very light rock.
However, I may decide later to move onto heavier music with another band so want to purchase a combo or rig that will be sufficient in volume to cut through whilst maintaining a quality sound. Having said that, I don't really want a monstrosity to cart around (I know, I want it all).
Someone suggested waiting for the Peavey TNT tour 600w combo to reach dealerships.
Any advice on this or other set ups would be appreciated.
Cheers

Never have a problem with volume ever again :)
This guy knows his stuff!

Or pretty much any 4x10 with a Hartke LH500 would be ample!

Ill stick my 2p in

Orange Bass Terror and OBC410 cab is a good set up take you a tad over budget but not too much if you shop around
although cabs tend to be a bit on the weighty side!

As a MarkBass bitch though im going to recommend MarkBass LMIII and a Ampeg B410 cab
This set up stomps! head weighs as much as a small bag of feathers and the cab is very portable for a 410

Used is the way to go. You could buy a totally monstrous rig for £1k! You don't want to cart a monstrosity around (who does nowadays!) but what are your priorities? Size/weight/volume? Do you have transport or are you looking for a rig to cart around with you on the tube/bus? Easier to steer you on choices with this sort of info.

You might consider this if buying new: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...s/TCE_Rigs.html
(Classic450 and 4x10 for £1099 - a little over budget but budgets are there to be bent a little!)

I believe this exact rig was for sale here s/h for £900 last week.

Am I the only person left who isn't a fan of TC?!

Dont get me wrong; lightweight, tough, loud (much like my beloved markbass) but they just sound like a hifi to me :s

Funny I've heard similar things said about Markbass before :)

As usual everything on here should be taken with a pinch of salt - try before you buy, IMHO, YMMV, etc, etc...

And so have I!

Agreed with the try before you buy though, this should be tattooed onto the hands of new musicans

I suspect the Peavey Tour TNT is 600w max, not RMS. I know RMS figures aren't necessarily an indication of how loud an amp actually seems, but if you have a close look at the hi-res pic of the back panel of the amp on the Peavey website, next to the external speaker output is the legend '300W RMS 4 OHMS' which makes me think you may need to use an external speaker to get the full 600W. I'm quite happy to be corrected about this.

The 600W will be what you get when you connect up an external extension cabinet, so it will get about 450W on its own. All figures RMS.

S.P.

How long have you got?! :)

There are an almost infinite number of solutions to your "problem". Nice problem to have BTW! A grand is a good budget, and I wish I had that much to invest in amplification...

Used is DEFINITELY the way to go IMO. Even if you buy something a few months old you are effectively turning your £1000 into something closer to £1300-£1500! Why buy new when you can get a quality item that has been loved and cherished for a short period of time - especially if it is from a fellow Basschatter! OK, you may have to wait a bit until the "ideal" solution becomes available, but it will save money and you can ask the original owner all sorts of pertinent questions about the set-up! It's a win-win situation!!

Brand-wise, you have an almost limited choice in that price bracket. There are massive fans of Trace Elliot, Ampeg, TC, MarkBass, Genz benz, Marshall, Peavey, Orange and many others on here - and they will all recommend that you buy whatever THEY have!!

Try as much as you can! "Sound" and "Tone" and such things are extremely subjective so just going on the recommendation of another bassist is unreliable. You can always try new gear in a dealer's place and then look for that same gear used! Naughty maybe, but its up to them to fight for your custom if they want it!

Thanks for that! Though 450w could well be sufficient, depending...

Remember that "watts" are units of electrical power, not volume! There are many threads on here debating the relative volume outputs of certain amps that state certain wattage levels....

For example, there seems to be a consensus of opinion that TC amps (particularly the RH450) are rated very conservatively, whereas some Ampeg products are sometimes a bit shy in the volume department despite their claimed output! :)

Thanks for the info... the Peavey in question is a new amp so I'm guessing few have used it in a live situation yet.

?? What I meant was, as it's not available in the UK yet, going on what you've said, it's not possible to predict its relative volume output...
