Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting

Bassassin

Recommended Posts

See, I always miss these, and am merely jealous that I didn't hang on to the myriad of westones, ibbys, tokais, fernandes, arias, etc. etc. etc. that flew through my hands in the 90s, for almost nothing. Still trying to get my hands on a couple more Sunn Mustangs before people work out how good they are as well....

Yeah, I'd like this, and have bid £305 on it. But, fundamentally even though I'd like to have this, not quite enough (not yet anyhow) to pay the £500 or so it may well go for. Over to you Flat Eric?

PS: If anyone's wondering why I'm being open about my bid amount in front of potential competitors, just say that I wouldn't be if I thought I had a realistic chance of winning

Edit: These had an ebony neck? Edit2: by "neck" I mean "fretboard" of course
Oooo! Well spotted. You guys must have some sort of special search going on - how on earth do you keep coming up with them??

Mmm, by the look of it, the other one was better, apart from the nasty skank on the side of the neck.
The other one had a case and original knobs. I would have a go and see how you do.

I shall step aside, on this occasion.

Good luck. :)

Someone please rescue this nice old Maya precision - I don't need any more basses!

No.

The other one was perfect, apart from the big mark on the neck.

This one is good but used and the knobs have been changed . The other one had an original case, I think.

Don't know what sort of music you are into but with the right strings on, these basses have a great Piano-like tone.
If you want Thud Thud, it's not this one.

Good luck. :)

I mainly want one of these because it's the bass I had when I first played bass, in my mid teens. It was second hand when my Dad bought it for me, but only by a few years then! The sound, and everything else, is secondary really.

Oops, not sure what came over me. Precision, Jazz, they're all the same thing really!

Point still stands that this is a decent looking bass, if it goes for the current bid.

It is - and it won't! If I thought there was any chance of this going for under a ton I'd be all over it.

And I will be if there is!

The Maya Jazz looks IMHO a lot nicer than this precision, possibly a bitsa? I wonder how the owner knows it's Japanese, or if it is.

Looks like a generic P copy, 80s onward, no reason at all to think it's MIJ. There's an Ebay seller mindset which calls any old-ish copy guitar Japanese (or if they want to be specific, "from the Ibanez factory"!), same as the way anything a bit tacky & 60s-looking is automatically a "Teisco". Ebay Experts, eh? :)

A shameless plug for my defretted Aria ZZB Deluxe

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...=STRK:MESELX:IT

Took it apart yesterday to give it a good clean. and added a shim to the neck pocket so that I could adjust the action at the bridge - with the frets gone, the saddles couldn;t go low enough for reasonable action

Cheaper here if anyone wants to make an offer by PM

Now that looks strrrrrrangely familiar! :) Or could it just be a bizarre coincidence?

Best of luck with the sale - give me a reason to kick myself!

That's demented! I've seen these a couple of times on Ebay & would've thought £250 was a bit nearer the mark. You'd have to really want the Vox logo too - this is identical to a Westbury Standard apart from the headstock, don't think it has the sexy German carve, either. Westys are fantastic little guitars & go for around £200. Or £60 from a charity shop if you're me.

I have the body of a vox standard bass, its a sandwich of very heavy very hard european ash or something. If there is the smallest chance the guitar has the same body material its not worth a fraction of that!
