Faithless
You saw the question.. Let it be 6-chorus Coltrane solo on Giant Steps, or just simple accompanying The Police bass-part.. I'm basically interested, in what fellow bassists do transcribe.. So we could share, and maybe catch some suggestions from each other to work on.. I've just started working on Berklee Woodwind Head's, saxophonists, Bill Pierce's solo on a plain 12-bar blues.. paul_wolfe
Hey Today I've been transcribing teh basslines to IT MUST BE LOVE by Madness and MOONDANCE by Van Morrison for some of my beginner students. Tomorrow I'm making a start on Mutiny by Junior Walker - with a Jamerson bass solo. That's gonna be....interesting!http://basschat.co.uk/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

7string
Been working on the following tracks: After the rain - Nelson Tears in the rain - Robin Beck To make you feel my love - Garth Brooks I am Satan - Paul Gilbert Fugitive - Danger Danger It never seems like work if you like the music you want to play
Doddy
When you say transcribing,I'm assuming you mean actually writing down and not just learning parrot fashion. In that case I've just transcribed Trey Anastasio's guitar solo from the Phish song 'Stash',and a couple of Janek Gwizdala heads,in lead sheet form. foal30
MoonDance Paul you should PM Bilbo, he will have this, it's one of his favorites. Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (not very well) Style Council - Shout to the Top (slightly better) Journey - Don't Stop Believing ( better again, still not very good) it's one of the most valuable things you can do, and not surprisingly I find it quite hard work. I often find I'm quite insecure about the correctness of note choices and generally even worse on making a concert decision on what chord THAT is but like theory and sight reading a little bit a day adds up. neepheid
Currently working on Liam Frost - Your Hand In Mine (feat. Martha Wainwright) - we're playing a birthday party at the end of February and it's one of the birthday girl's favourite songs of the moment, so it seemed like a nice thing to slip a cover version into the set for the evening. Bilbo
Jeff Berlin '20,000 Prayers' Its damn hard - bar lines all over the place, key changes every second chord, time signature changes, four against three bars over two bars- I'm sweatin'!! mcgraham
Guthrie Govan's 'Erotic Cakes' album. Started with the main heads/phrases of most of the songs (few of them I'm not too fussed about), then my favourite licks, and now moving to some of the solos. JakeBrownBass
I've almost finished transcribing a big band arrangement of Rob Thomas & Santana - Smooth I started easy with the drums & percussion. Then did the bass & piano. After that it was all the brass. Then i moved alot of the organ parts onto sax to fill everything out. Then did vocals last. The only thing i havn't done is the guitar, not because i can't do it, but because guitar is one the most awful things to try and write in sibelius! I'm currently finishing of all the articulation and general music markers. If anyones interested it in, i'll post up the finished file probably next week when i'm all done! Can't wait to hear it played in Big Band Jake

Normally I'd spend about an hour a day on transcription, which works out at about a quarter of my total practice time. At the moment I'm having a bunch of problems with the tendons in my left arm so I can't really do much practice, which means I'm spending more like 2 or 3 hours a day transcribing. On the original subject of the thread, currently transcribing: Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage (tenor solo done, working on Freddie Hubbard's trumpet solo) Tool - Various bits and pieces (The Pot, Vicarious, Forty Six & 2)

I'm also spending not more than an hour a day, but, what gets in my way, is finding a proper material to transcribe.. I thought, it'd be best to start at some plain blues solos, but, all that swing movement, it's just pain in the arse at the beginning to write it properly .. Do you rememember any of your first solos/themes, that you transcribed?
Bilbo
Faithless - the convention when writing swing solos is to write them as even quavers/8th notes and then indicate 'triplet swing feel' at the start. It means you haven't got to spend so much time writing triplet figures (which are also very hard to read).
