Fantastic stuff - these brought back some memories. Saw them live in Leeds around '84 (I think it was) and at the time I was playing metal, but listening to the Early Tapes a hell of lot as well - totally broadened my horizon's.

Much prefer them with the Gould boys.
Phil Gould has that Porcaro understated thing going on.. love it.

I remember buying Guaranteed on cassette (1991ish?) and realising that they were no longer fashionable.
So much good [i]proper[/i] muso-friendly music around then- Level 42, Hue and Cry, Go West (getting a bit more programmed leading me on to..) Scritti Politti (studio genius)

Back to Level 42- no slap but this has to be one of the most haunting tunes for anyone who had their heart broken in the late 80s- sorry to open those old wounds again

Good track - It seems L42 were doing lounge and chill before it was even invented... :)

I think the 80s gets way too much stick, having been around since the 60s and listening to music all that time, I can honestly say that the 80s were the best for me by far. OK the fashions were strange, but in retrospect what fashions aren't strange? H&C's Labour Of Love, great song, thanks for reminding me of them.

While there's no doubting the band had talent, on a more personal level, Level 42 represented everything that was bad musically about the 80s. It was a really terrible, terrible time if you were a fan of good old guitar based rock or punk. And remember punk was only a few years old. I remember one bloke saying to me [at the time] that they were just easy listening rock for stock market traders. Slappidity dappitdy slappidity. Yawn.

Twenty plus years on, the opening bars of any Level 42 track will still have me reaching for the remote control or changing the radio station.

A-flippin-men old chap. I [i]loved[/i] the 80s, sure there was some crap music but oh man there were some belters too. And that H&C track is one of them.

Hue and Cry can take a run and jump. They charged £500 to appear for a charity gig.

Younger guys? I`m 43 and lived through the 80`s music scene. I play in a covers band, we do alright and are quite busy and no one has ever asked us for Paul Young, Eurythnics, Human league, Haircut 100, etc. I was a heavy rocker in the 80`s (still am I suppose) but I do admit to wearing a skinny gray leather tie on one occasion to impress my missus. It matched my gray oxford tie shoes.
But only the once!

but then again whaddaya do when playing is your job?
some of the guys in the band, bass/drums/guitar were'nt hue, or cry. they would be on a wage/ retainer/ pd's/profit share/of mechandise, or what ever, dont judge TOO harshly. if youre pro without an advance/money you've still got to pay your gas&phone bill!!!
