The trouble is I like the Precision sound *and* the Jazz sound. For Jazz I love the *growl* and for Precision I love the *deep clank* As to necks I really like the Jazz neck better... Budget would be no more than £600 or so new... I'm considering the Geddy Lee, the Reggie Hamilton, the Jazz 24, I have to say that I like Japan or Korea more than Mexico, but that's because of a bad experience with a really crummy MIM Jazz a while back. paul, the Posted May 22, 2007 Share Posted May 22, 2007 I have a passive Californian Series Precision Special. That's a Precision shaped bass with a Jazz neck and Jazz bridge pup. I don't use the jazz pup very often but it's a great combination bass with great playability. Always been a fender fan and the J won hands down most of the time, but as far as I am concerned the more effects used the P bass wins, seems to suit lottas fuzz, octave, overdrive, synth sounds (or cuts through better). acidbass Posted May 23, 2007 Share Posted May 23, 2007 The Jazz 24 is a great bass, I played one at my local jamming session recently belonging to another bassist from my town, lovely Jaco style sound the way he had it set up. I assume you can get a variety of tones from it though! Felt great to play aswell, really well balanced and with a comfortable neck. My own personal preference out of those three basses you mentioned would, however, have to be the Geddy. Probably because I'm a massive Rush fan, but also because they really are excellent basses and lusted after by bassists from many a genre, not just progressive rock Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tee Posted May 23, 2007 Share Posted May 23, 2007 Precision wins for me, easily. I had a Geddy Lee but it was too damn quiet, i had to sell it. Just not powerful enough. I had a very good '99 MIM Jazz, which i bought back then. It was decent. In fact, for me, it was better then the Geddy Lee. THe GL just looked better. The Burpster Posted May 23, 2007 Share Posted May 23, 2007 Hummmn its an MIM and its a bit "rock" but the Frank Bello sigt. model (current) is P/J with an SD split front + P neck.... and sounds pretty damn good! Has lots of variation too for what you would think would be a "blow the back windows out" only bass. Or a Hot rodded P bass (was one recently on the 'bay for about what you want to spend) which is essentially a P with a J pup as well and a fader between. I am not a fender expert (by any stretch of the imagination) but I did a bit of research before I bought mine. Which I love and you would have to pry out of my cold dead hands! P's seem to be bit of a one trick pony. Where a Jazz is more versatile. Just try out as many as you can. Besides the Reggie Hamilton Signature the [url="http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0135760359"]Deluxe Series Active P Bass Special[/url] might be worth consideration even though it's a bit cheaper. Nice Fender type of basses with P + HB and J + HB configs are manufactured by [url="http://www.sandberg-guitars.de"]Sandberg[/url], but I guess they will be too expensive. bnt Posted May 28, 2007 Share Posted May 28, 2007 (edited) If "Fender" encompasses any of the other companies owned by Fender Musical Instrument Corporation (FMIC), then it's a toss-up between a Tacoma Thunderchief 5-string acoustic bass (high-C), and a SWR Super Redhead combo. ^_^ I wanted a SWR MoBass head, the one that Bryan Beller championed when he worked there, but it seems they canned it after he gave up his vice-presidency to go back to music. He's been with Mike Keneally for a few years, but this summer he's touring with Steve Vai, so it I suppose it was a good decision... Dood Posted May 28, 2007 Share Posted May 28, 2007 If you can find one (and they usually pop up on the USA 'bay), grab yourself a 1980's Fender Jazz Bass Special, or it's active 22 fret counterpart, the apltly named Fender Power Jazz Bass Special. They are of Japanese origin and are fan-bloomin-tastic! I have a PJBS 1989 model in red. the body has a few dings, but it sounds really amazing. It's a Jazz neck, with a P bass body, no pickguard. PJ pup arrangement. I understand the neck is based on a 62 Jazz. Noteable users include Duff McKagan (often seen with a pearl and a black JBS) - that geeza from Simple Minds had one and you can see one in the No More Tears video by Ozzy Ozbourne. oh..
