So i've been out of the BASS/Bassist loop for a little while & after feeling the pull of the low end once again i thought i drop a post to ask  about catching up on Who/What i've been missing out on for the past 15 years or so?

My fav's of yesteryear player were/are guys like Bromberg/Manring/Hamm/Caron/Wooten/Malone/Miller/Larue/Campagnani/Nitti...etc, so all the slapper/taper/soloist kind of bassist that do the fusion/prog type stuff id guess, I've been catching up on these guys & sofar some good & some WTF is this mess moments ;)

Now i did drop by Youtube first to see what was  up/down....BIG MISTAKE, WTF is with all this BASS BATTLE/Bass influencer stuff ? (no doubt at 52 im guessing its that i  just "don't get it")

2 Guys that have popped up on the radar that i have on playback loop atm are Alex Lofoco & Fernando Molinari, both monster players that also have great tunes/groove...Id say that Alex is like all my fav player fussed into one with a health amount of himself, shame he only seems to have released one album in like 8 years?

So any recommendations for me ?

Cheers

Michael League in Snarky Puppy

Funnily enough I think their first masterclass and gig in London was platoons 15 years ago. It has to be my greatest ever musical experience.

I don't think you lost a thing. These are flashy players but I still think most of the bass work is done in half or first position and with roots and fifths. Good timing is still the key.

The ubiquitous use of Class D amplifiers and Neodymium magnet speakers. ie speakers and cabs are smaller and/or lighter.

Playing with a pick and playing slap bass, and flatwound strings are now illegal, so don't be tempted.

There is a modest , underrated and highly talented bass maestro who is revered and lauded on Basschat ..Danny Sapko. Worth checking out .

Davie 504 is better entertainment though imho ..” check mate ! “

Lots of headless basses with varying designs and quality control issues ( cort space 5 , Ibanez EHB etc )

Hadrien Féraud who simply replaced Anthony Jackson with Hiromi is a hell of a player, even if, sometimes, he plays too much

And as mentioned by Anti, Kinga Głyk is certainly the most promising bassist around (she is Polish, by the way).

Charles Berthoud is the best YouTuber around for sure, but even if I admire his playing, his records are really meh, I mean he's a talented player and arranger, but on the poor side when it comes to composition.

Concerning the basses, Harley Benton is proposing excellent stuff at super low prices.

Amp wise, we entered the fully digital era ultra lightweight items.

Everything software based (modelling or sampling) is simply amazing these days.

And, sadly a lot of companies have gone away in 15 years and, now, you can't afford a Wal anymore...

Welcome back Gizmo! It's been a while ey!

Do you still have the basses you made? Will you be planning to get the luthiery tools out again?

All the best!
