KLOS Apollo Std bass incoming

I ordered a Klos Apollo Standard in the aqua finish earlier today from the very helpful customer services at Klos HQ in Utah, USA.

Now just the wait for it.

(Not my bass but no doubt looks the same)

Nice! I like the look of these, except for the short headstock in relation to everything else. They seem well-built, and the first reviews have been great! I like the concept of outsourcing the manufacturing of all the individual parts to China, and  doing the assembly and QC in the US to keep the prices low.

They offer lefties too. Looks tempting...

I heard stories of the necks being a bit unstable (not retaining a good setup) with heavier guage strings, and so not great for low tunings.

Would be great to see if that is an ongoing issue or was a one-off as they look great to fill the void left by Status (from the graphite neck perspective).

I was originally after a Status replacement neck for my Sledge MusicMan Sabre but the prices have gone a bit crazy lately.

Hoping this is all I need it to be

(Have only had you tube videos etc to go on)

Will report back once I have it

The Klos arrived yesterday and is 7lbs 10oz and balances perfectly. Lots to like, only quibble is not much space between the end of the neck and the neck pickup. (Apparently they will make pickguards to suit with the neck pickup further back)

No complaints with any aspect of the fit and finish of the bass and it plays great. I believe they are plek'd before final inspection.

How's the tone? Looks great! Did you get hit with customs/import duty etc?

PM'd.

Passive electronics seem to work really well with this bass if I compare it to a 2EQ Ray with status neck I had a while back. Lots of top end was accentuated with the carbon fibre neck and the stingray sizzle on that bass.

Seems enough top end on this but doesn't ever get out of hand. I'm going to try it through a Sadowsky SBP2 and see how that goes

I realise it is only a few weeks since you received it but has your opinion of the bass changed as you’ve played it more?

Only (slight) negative for me at any rate is the neck humbucker is too near to the end of the fretboard. I would spec the neck HB being further back towards the bridge one if I was ordering another Klos (and that will likely happen once the 5 string is out)

I like everything else about the bass. Neck profile, tone, set up,light weight, ergonomics etc are all ticking boxes for me. Happy with the bass being passive but still looking to try it with an external preamp pedal (Sadowsky SBP2)

The neck is great to play and has that sustain that just rings on and on. Everything is very even output wise and chords and intervals just sound better. That's what I wanted the bass for so it fills its brief well.

Hi. I think I remember hearing that the pickup route runs the full length between the neck and bridge pickup. I’ve included a pic from the Klos website for reference. If this is the case, all you’d need is a different pickguard and you could easily move that neck pickup toward the bridge. I’m sure they’d help you get one.

Thanks,that's really good to know

I'll message them and see what can be done. Definitely thinking new pickguard with the neck humbucker moved about an inch further back towards the bridge is the answer.

Gratuitous pic time.....
