la bam Posted March 25, 2023 Share Posted March 25, 2023 Hi all, Does anyone do prewired solderless preamps? I'm after one I can fit myself so ideally a solderless one. I'd like it to have a passive / active switch and 3 band eq. Also as the bass is a p/j I'd like a blend knob. So ideally.... 1. a volume pot with push/pull for active / passive. 2. A blend pot. 3. fretmeister Posted March 25, 2023 Share Posted March 25, 2023 Other than EMG I'm not sure there are any completely solderless options - mainly because of the need for a stereo jack socket. Some do have little screw connector boxes for connecting the pickups to the preamp, but I'm not aware of that approach for the socket. John East is quite accommodating though - if you decide on one of his, then he might be able to supply the preamp and socket with push on spade connectors instead. Call him rather than email though! Look no further than the Tone Monsters from Guitar Fuel. http://www.guitarfuel.com/home.html Ty has 2 styles with 5 or 6 options for each. Preamps can run on 9v or 18v. Absolute doddle to install, connect pickups. Not as affordable as when I bought my first unit, £40 maybe 7 years back, might be double that now. eBay store has no provision for UK customers, just message him and he'll sort it out. To hear them in a variety of basses, jump on YT, Johnny Lee Long installs them in just about everything. edit. Stereo jack socket comes prewired on every version. If so, I suggest you shield it whilst you are removing its guts. The benefit of the sticky copper tape used for shielding is that you can place an earth wire onto it and then stick another bit of sticky copper tape over the stripped end (making sure the strands are splayed out) thereby connecting it to earth without the use of a soldering iron. It's absolutely everything about them (apart from the shielding).... The necks are superb. The luminous side fret markers, the high mass bridge, and the tones you can get in passive are unreal. Really loving it. Took some time to get used to where to put my fingers with it being a reverse p, but so comfy to play now and every note stands out.
