Baseballfan1456 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Sorry about the dumb question, but can you actually be able to slap on one? Or would it be easier to use a Jazz Bass instead? Quote
bass_ferret Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 You can slap anything that has a gap between the neck and neck pup so yes you can - just as you can slap a 'Ray (and many have). Probably the only basses that cant be slapped are gibson style with a pup right next to the neck. Why you would want to is another matter. Quote
lukeward2004 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 You can slap on any bass you like, it just depends on whether or not you like the sound! Quote
guitarnbass Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I find p basses one of the easiest basses to slap, because of the pickguard, the distance between that and board/fret is quite small, especially if you have a low action which is what you want for slap bass. Same applies to jazzes I guess. My jackson has no guard and a big distance between the body and the board, and I really think it makes things more difficult, especially with thumbing.. Quote
low note lee Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 A P bass might be a little easier to slap than a J bass because of the wider nut. The string separation at the bridge isn't any different, but the angle they go to the nut is different. Have a play of one and see how you go Quote
Tait Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 I'd say its possible, but I don't like the sound. Quote
ped Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Listen to 'I don't trust myself (With loving you)' by John Mayer on iTunes or something - Pino tweaks some lovely little pops out of his P bass, and is a great example of how it can be the most funky sound imagineable! Quote
Burg Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 You can slap on anything you like. The other night, I was slapping my girlfriend's ukelele (oo err). Sounded awful but it was physically possible. Quote
SMART Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 You can even play slap on a 6-string as Alain Caron the Canadian bass player has proven! He has developed an amazing technique on his F Bass 6-string. Just go for it! Quote
Mike Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I think the slap on a Precision sound really defines 70s funk. Personally, I prefer a jazz - but appreciate the sound! Quote
Bassman7 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Talking of slap, I just received from Amazon Level 42 'Live at Wembley' on DVD, way to go Mark! Seriously, I dream to be able to play like the meister of slap. The fact I was also a drummer first might help me on my way! Back to the DVD - great show, great tight band, they really were superb live - great, great, great Mark King!! Quote
Delberthot Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 (edited) I slap on my '51 reissue precision every gig at some point. I love the sound I get with it. Edited October 17, 2007 by Delberthot Quote

I'm well into JM and Continuum is the dogs danglies and trying to pick up PPs basslines is challenging as there are some real sublte little bits in here and there..... Those little pops are a little finger tweak.... Gravity, is a particular favorite of my guitarist and me, and we're getting it pretty tight now! Quote
SJA Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Derek Forbes is slapping a P bass in this clip- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJE3FQR6orE Quote
Aussiephoenix Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 do NOT slap on a P bass... a rare and unfounded urban myth is going around that a saw blade will materialise between the 2 coils and saw off your pinky's nail... ... ... Course you can slap on a P bass... you can slap on a rickenbacker, you can slap on a fretless bass... Hell, Reggie Wooten slaps on a stratocaster! Quote

I believe fender only made them in that colour in 81/82 (unless I'm misinformed of course). Mine weights about a ton. Quote
jakenewmanbass Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 remember Peg by Steely Dan? that was a lovely cheeky slap chorus by Chuck Rainey and it sounds like a P bass to me Jake Quote
