The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?

Pop music is pretty circular everything, including bands with traditional instruments, comes back into vogue eventually.

It happened around a decade ago in the UK with bands like Artric Monkeys,Kaiser Chiefs & (to a lesser extent) Maximo Park doing big things.

At the moment it seems to be 'back to the 80s' with The Weekend and the 1975 getting a lot of hype for what ( in my opinion) is a very derivative sound. Give it a few more years & we'll be back to Britpop & 'proper' bass players again.

I haven't changed my point at all.

My post that you quoted was in response to a post saying that age had something to do with it and about being 'stuck in the 70s' ...

To which I replied ... 'I'm 64. I like Thundercat. It's got nothing to do with age. It's about being open-minded.'

You responded ...

Well, 'You like him because he suits your tastes' seems to be tautological. It sounds that perhaps you mean that 'liking someone' is no different from 'suiting one's tastes' and vice versa. In which case 'suiting one's tastes' cannot be an explanation for 'liking someone'. We would need to understand why and how it had come to suit one's tastes' for it to be any kind of explanation.

Anyway, I still maintain that being open-minded makes you more likely to develop new tastes. In fact 'more likely to develop new tastes' might well be what we would mean by 'being open-minded' and so it's a definition or even another tautology.

I then gave some further explanation of my position ...

So, I stick to my original claim that 'age is only a limiting factor on taste if one allows it to be'. Better to be open-minded, whatever age you are, and listen out for new and old stuff. Even stuff you once didn't like, maybe you'll see it in a new light. And stuff you used to like, you can come to think 'it's not as great as I thought'.

The post I responded to admitted to being 'stuck in the 70s'. But, anyway, your 'very strange argument' is actually not an argument that I made. I said ... my point was not whether someone or anyone, even you, ought to like Thundercat. The point was that being a certain age ought not to be a counter to liking or disliking him or anything else new (or old).

I stand by what I said.

Blue - do you actually think Hendrix is no longer relevant or are you just agreeing to get people to shut up?

He died before I was born but both him as a musician and the whole band as a collective are a huge influence on me and are clearly identifiable as influences on a lot of other musicians that I listen to. I don't think I'd like going to a gig where no one was influenced him/them.

Did anyone actually question Hendrix's relevance in this thread? Why be so angry about it here? His relevance - or the Beatles' - has nothing to do with the subject.

If you think all new music is sh!te, then just say that. But keep in mind middle-aged people have been saying similar things to young people for generations.

I'm maintaining my position.

I have spoken to working lead guitarists in their 40s about Hendrix.

They seem to think progressive rock guitar started with Eddie Van Halen. They seem very distant and ignorant when it comes to understanding Jimi's contribution and place in music history.

Este Haim. I'm about 30 years older than her, but I'd love to perform like that!

I know who I'd rather share a nude herring with. :gas:

Michael League is great! I certainly would describe Snarly Puppy as 'pop', so you might enjoy it!

For me, Matt Garrison, Janek Gwizdala, Michael League and MonoNeon are top of the 'inspirational' list and watching their playing inspires me to play and practice harder :-)
Not my thing at all.

What kind of music is this? It's not rock and roll or pop. It's not funk,it's not funky. Is it some kind of progressive jazz?

No idea I'm afraid. I suppose if it's not really your thing, then there's no need to worry about what it is! At least you were open-minded to have a listen. I'm all for listening to anything once and if it's not your bag, fair enough :-)

Thank you! Apparently the best gurning is conducted through a toilet seat, so your profile pic is strangely prophetic.

True, for example, I cant believe some of the nonsensical inaccurate remarks regarding Jimi Hendrix from young people. Jimi is no longer relevant, I get that. But I also say to them keep their opinions and comments to themselves, they weren't there and they don't know what they're talking about.

Is that fair?

It's why I will keep my mouth shut about Thundercat.I don't get him and he's not relevant to me

Not sure what your problem is with me personally, but whatever. I don't see what point you're making with the above, nobody said anything derogatory about any famous musician here apart from you.

The problem IMO with all the people mentioned as the new inspirations for bass players is that they seem to have zero impact beyond the world of other bass players. Coupled with the fact that the majority of their music has all the style and class of elevator muzak or a second rate porno movie soundtrack, it's little wonder that their audience is entirely composed of other musicians as the technical playing aspect is the only thing of value.

Big Red X - straight to the point as usual but my thoughts exactly. They say that the only people who find body builders attractive are other body builders.

This is what I wanted to say in my own post.

I just said that to agree with all the Hendrix haters.

Someone here told me my influences from the 60s and 70s were no longer relevant. So, I was like, cool yeah, I get it, none of the music I grew up with is relevant. Just a few weeks ago we had guys in here ripping on Jaco.

Me, I an not going to rip on any bands or artists. I will say this again ;

I thank my lucky stars I was born in 1953. Read whatever you want into that.

Saying Hendrix isn't relevant is like saying the Beatles aren't relevant.
I agree, all I'm saying is I have seen a lot of nonsensical remarks on bass chat about The Beatles and Hendrix, from members thet were too young to to have been there at the time. For some their parents were evenvtoo young.

I love the stuff and I still say if you weren't there you will never fully understand what was happening.
