I know I'm being an insufferable smart arse, but I didn't, maybe it was mentioned in this thread, if it wasn't it should have been

I didn't know Rod's version was a cover until ET mentioned it. The posts were just my humour. :)

Ah...yer, that's the one....lol....

Of course, it's a Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller song so, while the Drifters version may well be the original public release of the song, the Drifters are not themselves the origin of the song.

The distinction between 'original' and 'cover' often breaks down.

Disagreed, very much so. Starting to feel quite lonely here in the pro-Cocker camp.

I like Cocker usually, and certainly liked the Grease Band but not that cover as the definitive version.

I also don't get why anyone would think that every Dylan cover is better. Hendrix's version of Like a Rolling Stone is nothing on the Dylan version, IMO

I knew that Lieber & Stoller wrote a lot of hits, but just been to Wiki
and there are a few there I didn't realise were written by them, or at least
collaborations.

For anyone with an interest in Leiber & Stoller this is a must have:

Joan Morris & William Bolcom "Other Songs By Leiber and Stoller'. Released in the 70s on the Nonesuch label it has some Leiber & Stoller classics sung by a Mezzo-Soprano with Piano accompaniment. Their version of 'Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots' is worth the price alone!

I prefer Led Zeppelin's cover of Rolf Harris's Stairway to Heaven.
I read somewhere that Harris had never heard the Led Zeppelin (or any other) version and so learned the song merely from the sheet music as he didn't want to be influenced by anyone else.

Two years before Rod Stewart was the Chris Farlowe version of Mike D'Abo's Handbags and Gladrags.

They'll be saying next that Sailing isn't a Rod original. Is nothing sacred?

Rod Stewart, like him or not, does have a long record (no pun intended) of interpreting other people's songs (and making them his own) as well as writing his own.

It was also true of the Faces, e.g. Maybe I'm Amazed, I Know I'm Losing You etc.
