After a very close race (nearly a 3 way tie!) BobbyK pulled ahead to secure 1st place in last months competition and has provided me with this months picture:

The usual gumph :

A picture will be posted by the previous months winner to act as inspiration for that months piece. The piece should be no more than 5 minutes long and should be composed and recorded in the same month as the piece in question.

To be clear, any instruments / sounds can be used although copyright should be followed for obvious reasons. Also Basschat T&C's should be followed within the actual recording so :

I was thinking more in terms of cost etc... Once we have a years worth I'll get a group together to discuss how to best go about it. Releasing on a monthly basis would definitely not be cost effective. Releasing 12 cd's in one go may be a possibility. If we're not worried about packaging etc. Or even a dvd of a years worth may be possible (then burn your own compilation from there).

Put it on your xmas list for Santa this year and hopefully you'll get it in your stocking (oooer...)

^ There might be a way to package the tracks from each month and make them available as a digital download via Bandcamp or similar. This could be done free of charge or with the option of donating an amount to Basschat.

Back on topic: nice pic! And suitably post-Festive. Has got me thinking already...

Hope you can work something with this pic chaps. I found it incredibly hard to choose something, but then I saw this on the BBC news website, under "the year in pictures." It's from a performance that was part of the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrations last year.

Looking forward to hearing what you come up with ;-)

Good choice Bob - a slightly political angle is cool for sure - I'll try and find the time to do something but won't be for a week or more

Cheers

Of course, it doesn't have to be political at all (maybe I shouldn't have mentioned where it came from)

As that fella on Catchphrase used to say.... :) say what you see!!

The first rule of the photo is: we don't talk about the photo ;)

Seriously though, I didn't think 'politics' when I first saw it - but it did spark a bunch of other things. Like the eternal struggle of replacing a duvet cover.

I really can't settle on an interpretation of this, I look at it and see a lot of things, a mountain range, a guy trapped under a sheet (reassuring seen as that's what it is), and any number of sci-fi/horror films where something bursts forth from a membrane. I'll probably end up doing something claustrophobic and unsettling. I'm setting myself a slight challenge of only using a bass, guitar, and pedals to generate sounds, which should be fine except for the glitchy drum beat I have planned, that could be a bit of a ball ache.

^ That is a nice idea, I like it (not the ball ache part, the rest of it ;) ).

You could maybe try creating a drum pattern by slapping'n'tapping - not necessarily playing it 'live', but creating some suitable thumps and pops that you could then sample and arrange to create a drum pattern. It's got me thinking anyway! Something I'll have to try myself in future.

BigRedX did something similar-ish in September - not using a bass, but creating a drum pattern and other sounds out of samples. Worked very well. You can listen to it here if you missed it first time round.

All the sounds for that piece were generated by getting Audacity to interpretate the data of the JPEG provided for that month's inspiration as waveform data and then chop it up to create the individual samples that make up the track.

Creating a rhythm track from sounds generated by a bass should be fairly simple in comparison.

RedX's is more the kind of thing I had in mind (I think I voted for his actually, definitley my kind of thing) I'm probably gonna end up using delay pedal glitch's more than anything, this is a quick test I knocked together, it's the kind of thing I'm aiming for:
https://soundcloud.com/bobbass4k/glitch-loop-test

The first sound is a delay pedal glitch, and the kickdrumesque sounds are also pedal manipulations, the main trouble I'm having is getting decent snare and hat sounds the same way, the ones in that test are library samples.

I've got two ideas for this month, so I need to make up my mind pronto and start sketching something out.

One of the ideas needs a female vocal. With the option of some very invasive surgery being off the cards  , I might try persuading Mrs Skol to have a go at singing.

[all together now] "It's a family affair..."
