of course the big thing is 'it's how you play them'. I've heard covers bands doing most of the songs mentioned here, sometimes I enjoy them, sometimes not, I always think that a crowd can sense when a bands just going through the motions, In others words if the band isn't enjoying it how the hell can you expect the crowd to.

This is a biggy.

We can do lots of the old favourites but don't list them , but if the crowd are up and bouncing then these are the songs that can drop in and work brilliantly , they are popular for a reason.

We go to the pub after most rehearsals. Last time we went in a local had put nessendormer on the jukebox. Can't see many bands doing that :P

That'll be those football fan people. Ain't never going to please them.

We made a decision limit the covers we did by only doing songs by British bands and that they had to have been in the top 40. So the 10 we most often put in our set and the ones that get the best reaction from the crowd are...

London Calling
Pump it up
Take me Out
Start
My Girl (Madness)
I Predict a Riot
Unbearable (The Wonder Stuff)
Start me up
Save a Prayer
and a rocked out version of Kids in America that goes down a storm

... And they are fun to play as well :)

What strikes me is that you will get things like X factor and Cowell absolutely panned on here...and rightly so, IMO.. its basic cack with the chance to throw up a decent singer once in a while...but there you go..!!!
but then you'll also get people here saying they will play anything that the publlic/punters wants..
well, the public wants X factor if you believe the viewing figures...??

Make up your minds.... I don't care so much where you stand but be consistant one way or another.
That would be my take

The x-factor is a bit of fantasy so that the viewers, and some of the contestants, can escape from their dreary lives for a couple of hours and feel good that their own lives aren't as bad as the contestants. Same as Eastenders and Coronation Street etc.

The x-factor is not a search for the next big thing.

I think the general moan about x-factor is from the people who believe that they're actually looking for someone with the X-factor.

Cowell is a clever guy. Everyone gets what they want, even those who want something to moan about.

You'll find the people who moan about x-factor also moan about karaoke in pubs.

The people staying in watching x factor aren't out at a live gig...

My current covers band does none of those.

Haha nor does mine! and we still manage about 6 gigs on average a month.
[/quote]

Likewise. We don't do anything from the OP's list, but we do some stuff that's apparently for "coffin dodgers" and that's been otherwise slated elsewhere, yet we're turning down more gigs than we're able to do.

Being honest the standard set list is just like karaoke. I leave before it gets going.
There is three pubs which are a short walk from my house. All three book bands that play the same crap. So I never attend any gigs at any of them & all my mates don't either.
Not so long ago the local booked a band who was totally original & played their own music & some great Motown covers. I got a call from my mate, me & the Mrs went down to see them & the pub was packed.

As a band, know your audience and your customer, I suppose it depends to some degree if you intend to entertain the customers audience, or bring your own ,but it's relevant of whether you play your own stuff or covers.

ed for much typo stuff , and in such a short post

Our setlist for my covers band.

Talking heads; psycho killer
KOL; Molly's chambers
Raconteurs; steady as she goes
White stripes; I just don't know what .....
The strokes; last night/hard to explain
Radiohead; high and dry/ fake plastic trees
Bowie; suffrajet city
Arctic monkeys; dancefloor
Billy idol; white wedding ( not happy about this one)
T Rex; get it on
The clash; stay or go

And more filler, its not my taste in music per say (although I got no beef with talking heads) I have my original band to indulge my sonic youth and fugazi fixation. The pub punters don't want to hear that so our set tries to be different yet familiar at the same time :)

Getting some great ideas from this thread!

My band plays 2 from the OP, but also many other obvious standards like Shakin' All Over, Valerie and Forget You.

Some of the more weird ones are:

You're So Vain - Carly Simon (gets a great singalong from the ladies)
Call Me The Breeze - JJ Cale version (good chance to introduce the band with some nice solos from everyone)
I Shot The Sheriff - Eric Clapton version
Back To Black - Amy Winehouse (another one for the ladies)

I find that any relatively well known song gets a good reaction as long as it's played with conviction and it's performed at a sensible point in the set.

I once saw a band play Don't Fear The Reaper; a song that I used to regard with an almighty yawn. But the band played it so well, and sounded so good doing it and really enjoyed playing it and it had a great vibe about it which was infectious. Of course you wouldn't play that song at the arse end of the last set, but songs like that certainly have their place!

Truckstop

Hmm. That's quite a specialised list. Do you do many pub gigs?

I was in a band with a drummer who had a similar outlook to you. Only listened to a narrow range of music and practically vetoed every song because he had never heard of it (and therefore no one else would have.)

It was a real shame and an effort to get him to play anything, including songs that didn't have the same line up as us in the original recording.

I struggle to see how anyone can call themselves a musician if they don't listen to practically anything and everything.

Not really. Some of the public wants X Factor...but only some of the time.

At other times, The Public might want to just relax and read a book, or go for a nice meal with someone special...or maybe go and see a live band doing songs that remind them of their younger days, or just songs that they know and like to dance to.

Shocking, I know...
