Some people have all the luck!! Congrats...Really jealous - even though I already have a Overwater J4(see my avatar) - still be nice to get a new bass specially designed/built for free..I'm sure that many would agree that Overwater must be one of the best companies to get an endorsement deal with..as I said "really jealous"..

Excellent news and you won't be disappointed. I have 2 Overwaters. My custom is the one in my avatar.
Chris and the team were a great help and all very friendly and approachable with any queries before, during and even after the build.

And Chris makes a damn good coffee :)

All the very best and keep us all posted on what you order.

Thanks guys for the nice comments! It's actually an artist deal endorsement, not a full endorsement (Chris told me they dont really do those anymore) so not free, but big old discount and its ongoing. Plus I'll still get all the benifits of being an endorsee and to be honest, having those guys behind me is a big step forward already no matter what else! Only ever heard lovely things about the instruments and Chris sounds like a total sweetheart. So Im totally stoked.

As to what I'll be getting as my first Overwater bass, I want to keep it versatile and reasonably simple. Almost all the gigs Ive ever got and continue to get are indie/pop or folky, so lumping a great big fancy custom 7 stringer will probably just get me funny looks and possibly fired lol. My main bass is a 79 wine red custom u.s.a Precision, which I love and plays like a dream. So I'm thinking and Chris seems to be in agreement, that a J series would be the most sensible option for me. That way no-one gets freaked out when I take it out the case and I will be able to always use it in what ever gig I get given. Chris also said that being a bit on the tiddly side of things, he would he happy to make a slightly smaller scale and lighter instrument too. I've yet to think about woods and details...not exactly great when it comes to that sort of stuff. Anyone got any good advice? Though I know I prefer rosewood fretboard. Also got the girly issue of colour to contend with :). OH decisions lool.

If you like a PBass neck then why not ask for a P profile neck on a Jazz body?

As for colours, if your not going with a wood body then check out Alsacorp, they do some awesome stuff :)

Sticking a wenge neck on there would make it quite different for a jazz. I really love the sound of wenge and bubinga together (being a warwick fan) so I got that in my custom bass. Lovely growly sound. But bubinga is most definitely not light :)

Usual advice applies really, try loads of basses and find what you like. Have you considered fanned frets or making it a 5 string? Check out some dingwalls for there take on a jazz bass and you'll see how different it can really be :)

Most of all congratulations and have fun with it :o

thats immediately a bit too 'jazz' for me I think and dont think my manager would let me 10 miles within any session :) but the p neck on a jazz body is something to think about. Chris was also talking about a p/j (ha pyjamas) pick up set up too which I might do. Maybe natural wood colour is a good option too. hmmm. Does anyone know which bass shops in london sell overwaters? I know the gallery sells the overwater by tanglewood basses but are there any places that sell the other series?

:)

Which bit is too "jazz"? The fanned frets or the 5 string part. Both are quite common these days, is your manager really THAT worried about image? Surely if something sounds good and encourages you to be a better player (which is what it's all about really) then surely that would be enough?

Fanned frets really aren't that common, I know plent of bassists that don't have a clue what they are, let alone the general public.
Also, as a working player I'd personally say image is about 50% the deciding factor of getting the gig or not. You can be the best player in the world but if you don't look right, you won't get the gig.

Kinda what Jake said but also, I have a very good 79 precision bass already. Which if the manager or md would have a choice of that or a fan fretted fiver, they would instantly choose the p. Im ok with that of course, but sort of defeats the object of being endorsed and therefore using the endorsed bass as much as possible! Plus its not completely free, its an artist deal endorsement (apparently chris says no-one really does full endorsements anymore as no or at least very few companies can afford it.) So its a case of a big discount instead and Im not forking out for something that wont get used. If I really need a five string, I've got a diamond series schecter that would do that job fine. Mind you its very much a rock/metal bass so currently getting dusty in a corner as I dont get many of those types of gigs. I also used to have a five string fretless too, but i sold it because it was again too 'specific' a bass and it just wasn't getting used.

Maybe but most of my gigs dont need that extra range, so is there any point in paying extra for it? However I'm currently in between bands as my main one just broke up, I've had a fair few phone calls but as of yet not sure who's going to decide I'm their girl. One gig in particular is quite different to what I've done before, more electronic/multi instrmental/radiohead in rainbows type stuff so you never know that might require a 5 string. If I get it. Just hoping they decide before I finalize with Chris what I want him to make me. :)
