It was handy to find a stand that moulded earplugs on the spot, at last. There were heaps of lovely basses to play and I felt like a kid in a toyshop to start with. The Dingwalls were interesting to play, reasonably light with some really nice slim necks. Sheldon Dingwall was also very happy to talk about the development of his fanned fret basses. Nice to get a chance to play another Roadworn Jazz for comparisions to mine. Thankfully, I'm still happy with mine tonight. The whole thing was loud, no doubt,but there was a great deal of equipement I wouldn't normally come across, so it was worth it for that alone. Also met a few BC'ers, which was great. Also thanks for Barrie, Phil and Keith for a great time on the Bassgear stand. What a way to meet other bass players ! Yes, the MM stand was by far the best, plenty of stations with headphones to try what you like and actually HEAR it... Would still have been true even if it hadn't had the benefit of being away from the main exhibitor's hall, which was just a wall of noise. I went to listen to Phil Mann soloing on the Institute stand, and could barely distinguish a note standing 5 ft in front of him. Bring back the DB police!!! And TM Stevens was b****y marvellous - and such a nice guy! Really inspiring and a brilliant class, and took a HUGE amount of time out with aspiring kids after the session, chatting, encouraging, taking pics... Well done that man Suprised no-one's mentioned Gary Willis so far - played a really good set (and answered some interesting questions) in the main auditorium on Saturday. urb Posted March 13, 2011 Author Share Posted March 13, 2011 Hello again - I'd love to be back there again today but I'm knackered - such a fun day, mainly because I didn't spend too much time in the trade hall - Gary Willis was absolutely my highlight, he's simply one of the best bassists ever and makes great music with astounding technique and has also fully mastered the incredible technical possibilities of bringing studio technology to the live environment... Janek was great as well - he's really developed as a player and person and his clinic was cool, but sadly the out front sound was pretty crap - amazing playing and great chat though. Right - I meant to post this yesterday but couldn't be arsed to switch on my laptop - I think this may qualify as 'pic of the day': Mark King, Gary Willis and Janek Gwizdala all in the same room backstage: [attachment=74686:mark_kin...nek_lbgs.JPG] All lovely chaps and all very cool in person - Mr King particularly erudite and funny Hope today is as well attended and hope this all bodes well for future events. Two interesting things I heard mentioned in relation to how successful this has been in context of other 'bass days': This was the biggest of it's kind even compared to things in the US and others on Europe - secondly Bass Player Live (sponsored by the US bass mag) only sold 200 tickets at its last event - and that featured Stanley Clarke, Vic Wooten, Marcus, Matt Garrison etc - so if they can book some more big names for next year this could be repeated. Bassmurf Posted March 13, 2011 Share Posted March 13, 2011 (edited) We went yesterday (though wasn't sure what line we should've been waiting in cos of the Doctor Who exhibition...lol) I was initially impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the BGM staff - even renewed my subscription. As a few peeps have already mentioned, the amount of slap bass going on and the volume was ridiculous - took me back to the shows @ Wembley Conference centre in the early '90's, as we were walking in the first main culprits we picked up on was the Trace Elliot stand, damn those amps move some air! Oh and the Ampeg and GK stands as well, I understand your amps are loud but do ya have to turn them up that much? The majority of the booths we liked, the MM one was of course one of the best with the headphones set up, loved the Status Graphite stand, had a quick look at Phil Mann's playing and the bloke on the Rotosound one (Nigel Cluuterbuck?), the new Yamahas looked lush as well! Nice to see both the Bass Merchant and Bass Direct chaps there also...but was not impressed with the First Line Distribution booth, was really looking forward to seeing some lovely Spectors, the DR Neon strings and even having a butchers at some Eden stuff but how small and dark was their stand - were they not that bothered about showing their products? And it felt like everytime I went to have a closer look - either one of the guys from the stand had to get past me or there was some endorsee and his mates hanging around so couldn't get near! Have found out since Cass Lewis, BC's very own Dood and some other peeps were making appearances at various stands - maybe next year this info could be centralised or maybe in the program as from mid-afternoon we stayed out of the main exhibition hall. Oooops! But overall really enjoyed it - will definitely be at the next one, my other half who came with me even got a bit starstruck when Mark King walked past us! Dave[/quote] Indeed, these days you can pretty much have them done anywhere, my mate had his done down the pub as the person who was doing them advertises as being a mobile business and will go to anywhere that is convenient and suitable. I had some moulds done at Olympia yesterday. I had some ER15's which rather annoyingly went "missing" at Hammy Odeon last year, it was all about not actually getting round to getting them done until now when i saw the stall and said "yes please" instantly. I ordered the new pro style plugs they were advertising, i'm interested to see how they'll be as they're not the American brand that are imported so the price is cheaper and the technology better. Tried lots of new things, quite a few on basis of why-do-so-many-BCers-love these: EBMM Stingray - tried a 2EQ H and a 3EQ H. Nice but didn't blow me away. Ibanez Gary Willis - I guess the synthetic fingerboard is a bit Marmite: I love Marmite, but I didn't love this. Status - didn't get on with the all-graphite Stealth, but was quite taken with the S2. Hmm... G&L JB-2 (Tribute) - soooo tempting. These had been on want-try list for a while, and it didn't disappoint. In fact it was mostly the fact that I it didn't come with a case (and I've have to carry it home in a box) stopped me snapping it up there and then. Yamaha - BB1024 was nice (I thought I was primarily looking for a passive 4-string) but then surprised myself by being quite taken with the TRB active 5-string. Fender Precision Deluxe MIA (Bass Merchant) - being a P-basser with an inkling for a bridge pup, I expected a lot from this but it didn't do it for me. Although being opposite the this-one-doesn't-go-below-eleven Ampeg stand didn't help. Roscoe fretless (Bass Direct) - the big hit of the show. One of those love-at-first-pluck basses. I put it down, wandered around for an hour or so then came back ready to punish the plastic. Only the failure of the BD card machine saved me from my impulsiveness, so now I get to sleep on it. So all in all a success: I knew I wanted a tasty fretless, and found one. I didn't know quite what I wanted for a fretted, and came away with a better idea. That and saw the list price for the US models Boy were the two I got here bargains!! I also got a chance to play the Sterling Ray34CA, Its safe to say I'll have one of those shortly! I didnt find the volume too bad but I really did appreciate going out for a breather every now and then just do re-pressurize my insides! Great to meet everyone I did meet and to those of you that didnt, I'm really sorry I missed you!
