Agreed, If it was possible to significantly undercut the competition with a US manufactured bass someone would have done it. And if nobody saw the value in paying that much for a US manufactured bass, these companies would go out of business.
We don’t all play in the same manner or buy things for the same reasons. I’m quite confident I haven’t dinted any of my instruments in the last 5 years and I play one of the collection everyday when I’m at home.
And that’s where a luthier who hand picks the woods can hopefully make some difference. Not that I’m saying there is an exact science to the outcome based on woods alone. Handmade doesn’t always mean better than CNC either, there’s just too many variants.
This is basically the only guaranteed difference. Does the buyer really want something that has been assembled in the west or something assembled in the east!
I suppose there’s two issues:
1) they have the goods in stock but one or both are still in original packaging that they don’t want to undo.
2) what if they say it fits but the margins are tight and you argue it doesn’t upon receipt? A wasted effort for all.
Anyone else finding the sets available on I player a bit restricted? There’s quite a few sets I missed and wanted to catch up on but can’t find them in the menus! Seems to mostly just be the well known acts.
The difference in quality of components between the factories are marginal. The quality of build isn’t consistent for any of them but there is more QC time the higher up the food chain you go.
For not much more than a new US made artist series Fender bass, I purchased a handmade jazz new from Overwater. The difference in quality is undeniable.
She brought a lot of energy and her band duly followed. They were absolutely on it and giving it their all, the best performance of the weekend for me but still plenty to catchup on.
I’m a loyle carner fan anyway but found his set very raw and intimate (in a good way). The bassist was playing what appeared to be a Fender Ultra which sounded great.
Well I watched thirty minutes of Charlie XCX to see what the fuss was about. What a disgrace. Miming, no band, just nothing but a flashing screen and a recording. Shouldn’t be allowed at Glastonbury.

back on topic, I think the bassist in the script was playing a Tom Stenback. If it was then it’s possibly the poshest bass so far 😂
