1.
I'm a Bass player, why I got lumbared with this i'll never know. We are currently using a old and unrelaible Peavey 100watt head and 2 passive Carlsbo spreaker (12" i think) It looks terrible, sounds worse with cutting out and feedback issues. It's currently only used for the vocals and at the moment just in small pub gigs playing rock and indie covers. From talking to a few bands they are always suggesting we get a much bigger powered PA. Monitors would be a help I think. So what to get ? Couple of active speakers ? What wattage ? Size ? 16 Channel mixer ? Small wedge minitors ? As I said, we're only doing pub gigs so don't make any money other than expenses so cost is important (ie I'll get stuck with the bill) Current thinking is s/h Behringer stuff ? Any thoughts or guidence would be greatly appreciated. Ta Neil
Neil keep your eyes on something like these,, http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2c70f699dd i do pa hire and i use the the evp 15 400w powered monitors and they sound great i dont get any feed back from them, i have 5 of them 2 12" 300w powered ones. im very happy with them and so are the people who use them. and cheap enough to replace if needed quick. My main FOH pa is all HK actor, i dont plan on changing any of it for a good few years yet. if these are as good as the monitors then they will give you a good sound for small gigs for not much money. while you are doing the gigs save and get a pair of bins to add for bigger gigs. or as NORRIS said, if you have a bit more to spend then the Mackie thumps or SRM are a good step up again. and also as LES says the JBL are also good, its all down to £, ask the rest of the band to chip in ESP the singer !! If they dont want to help with costs then treat the pa as an active member of the band and it gets an equal cut,
2. Check this about the UB40 sax player Brian Travers playing in UB40 tribute bands... intresting and i think he is great doing it, well done Brian. 5. got all Keb mo's cds, im mainly a modern blues fan, lloyd jones, lucky peterson, delbert mcclinton, colin james etc What keb has done is very clever, you get the feeling the roots of his music is triditional old school blues, he keeps this constant in his sound with the use of his steel national/dobro and an almost banjo type style and sound, through most of the tracks on his cd's but the drums and bass is upto date, feeling funky at times even pop. Very catchy, i think he is great. If you like a bit of funk in your blues check out also robert randolph and the family band, his cd " unclassified" i cant take off it really kicks ass, ... Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxcLNHasPx4
6. if i had to buy an expensive bass i would go and collect it, for two reasons, 1, to check it out 2, i dont trust any post. ( or sellers !!!) so... if i had an expensive bass for sale i would expect the buyer to do the same if he cant be bothered to do this and wants it posting then he can arrange that. why should i trust my bass in the hand of the post i would not use myself ??? if buyers want to trust them then thats their chance, if it arrives in bits he has only himself to blame providing the packing is sound, england is not that big and if it is something special then make a special trip.
7. Cant believe my fave is not here yet.... The strolling bones. It works on a few levels
8. If anyone is selling a GA24 please send me a pm.
9. Yes in active mode but there is a problem,.... i use two amps live, a small 2x10 swr redhead for smaller gigs, and a swr sm500 pro with a golly 6x10 for bigger gigs ( outdoor mainly) the redhead is a fantastic combo, the best 2x10 i have tried (and have been through most of them) with my wal and my other 83 G&L it sounds amazing, but.. it just cant handle the lows of the 2000E so i got a swr 2x10 ext cab and replaced the speakers with 2 x 500w 10" eminence Kappa, while it improved the o/p taking less strain off the combo it still struggled with the sub lows that the "E" produced so to use it well it was clear it needs big strong cab literage. so the only time i use it live is with the 500 and 6x10,,,, that knowing smile on my face before i play a note is not there for show, taking out the actives explains the reason yours has a lower o/p, the active preamp really does give it some power, to quote a remark by another l2000E "El tookay" user on the "basses by leo" forum http://www.bassesbyl....php?f=4&t=1280 "Fats is correct...to a point. At the start of the BBE era, the preamp was changed to Version 1.0, then again to version 1.1 around 1997 (Brad, corect me if I'm wrong there...). Both revisions were to improve battery life and lower noise. Also, there are some of us GLeeks that can hear subtle differences in the Ver. 1.0 and 1.1's, those being the 1.0 is more modern and clean, while the 1.1 comes back to the E series preamp. ...and thats where it gets interesting. The first E's had a preamp that did not allow the treble knob to function when the bridge pup is solo'ed. This was due to the early E preamps' chip not being able to handle the hard transients generated by the MFD's. The second generation E preamp was slightly tweaked with capacitors, and allowed the treble control to function in all positions, including the bridge pup solo'ed. E's and later L2000's all used the same preamp from early 1982 to 1992. Sound differences? Second-gen preamps sound clean and deep, adding big lows and highs that are not harsh or tinny. The bottom end on first-gen preamps can knock down buildings. Nothing sounds as mammoth as a first-gen E in OMG mode, and add in slot pole pickups, you can adversely affect the sperm count of the first 20 rows . My 81 E makes my son's crappy Kustom practice amp sound like a dimed SVT at coliseum levels. I have an early 1983 L2000E fretless with the second-gen pre, and I actually prefer that pre for the fretless, a little more versatile, a little more transparent high end. That one sings better, but the 81 is first-call for all-out seismic disruption."
10.
Yup. SWR and Jazz Bass. - those 'Acoustic' amps and Jazzes are pretty darn tootin' too!
+2 SWR and a jazz or ( enter smug mode.. a wal.)

14. The best one i have found, is the Boss RV3 ( if you can find one) they do pop up on ebay now and again it is just fantastic with bass as it has DDelay as well. i like it better than the tc. try it you will love it, if you play fretless or do solo bass this is a must have. if you see one cheap snap it up, as the prices are on there way up... some info.. RV-3 Digital Reverb/Delay The RV-3 was launched in the mid 90s after 4 years without a Reverb pedal in the Boss lineup. 16.
Thanks, enjoyed that. The only Wayne Johnson I could find on Spotify is a different kettle of fish! Shame, will have to look a bit wider.
Hi 4strings, Grasshopper is getting very hard to get on CD with prices at mo on amazon at £80 ! keep your eyes on ebay they pop up now and again cheap, the LP is still available at a good price ( still have mine and play it on an old thorens td160 with quad and quad esl63 electrostats and its one of the clearest albums i have ever heard so much better than cd) there is another one with jimmy j on called arrowhead and also a very good one with gary willis called keeping the dream alive you can get this as a cd on amazon from Zoverstocks for £1.20 ( used but will be as good as new) worth every penny, read the amazing reviews, " http://www.amazon.co...72244456&sr=1-3 Speaking of gary willis another amazing to be had is his cd BENT, another hifi bliss sounding cd with from other world bass playing ( and drumming by dennis chambers!.....say no more) here he is with another very good bass player Frans Vollink http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fqSBH0zr8w

19. i have managed to get one from a very nice fellow bass chatter andreapenna. On fist trying i was not that impressed as prob was expecting a massive improvement on my RV3, but then after Andrea,s good advice i tried the editor and managed to clean up the amount of bass boom in the reverb its self, not the bass sound..... there is a very handy switch in the software ( pic att switch at top) that lets you turn off your bass sound so you just get the reverb added to the bass sound ( with the sampled reverbed bass in it) you can then move the timing of where the reverb comes in up to 100ms after you play your note. so when you press said switch to bring back your bass sound, you play your note you get the percussive sound of you playing it with no tone suck and no reverb at the beginning then the reverb comes in when you want and as soft as you want with out muddying up the beginning of the notes, when it does come in you dont want a wooly boomy bass sound in the reverb ( this is the sampled bass sound now) this is the bit i liked, by using the tone control this only effects the tone of you sampled bass in the reverb, not your own played bass sound, so you can take the boom out of it, if that makes sence. All in all yes happy with it. and a good learning curve in understanding reverb alot better I will try it live but i dont think it will drag me away from my RV3 ( i really like the addition of the D,Delay as well,) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuqs9Y9OzAY
20. Hi All I am trying to find out about how many L2000E basses there are kicking about in the uk. these are the ones with the fender type head, control plate on the front, some of the early ones had slot screwdriver pole pieces, i have had a wanted ad on here for 3 years with nothing coming up, i have seen in the past only 5 in the uk, and i am beginning to think they are prob one of the rarest basses in the uk, i have only ever seen 2 for sale in the uk. please post here a pic if you have one or a link to one be it youtube or for sale, Must be in the Uk. I love these basses, they are like a musicman Sabre on Crack, in fact there is only months between them, i have another post on here with a comparison between them if interested. 79 sabre V 81 G&L L2000E Some things you might not know about the 2000E what sets them apart from the later 2000 series. 1) The fingerboard on the Early L2000E and some early L2000 is unstained Ebony not rosewood. 2) Leo curved the finger board bottom like he did on the early fender basses. 3) The L2000E had a skunk stripe down the back of the neck on both maple and ebony boards. 4) Leo also went back to the 3 screw tilt neck, From L2000E and then on to the L2000 5) Slot pole pieces, When you move these 90 Deg slot inline with string or across, it sounds different, slightly. 6) The L2000E and for the first year had "Schaller" stamped tuners, with the norm alloy tuning heads to cut down weight. 7) Like the early Musicmans Leo started the serial numbers off from B00... 8) Series 1 pre amps together with the early slot pickups on the early L2000E the OP is huge so were tamed down as were too powerful i think the transients from the pups were too much and were blowing chips, Here is mine. Cheers Hanging out with his mates.
21. Loads of very good suggestions here. Speaking of jimmy Johnson (whitecloud) i have 100s of bass related cd's mainly funk, acid jazz, jazz, soul, n soul, rare groove, solo bass.etc i would like to offer one i feel VERY overlooked as bass players album prob not even looked at at all, and its one of my fave bass albums, i have it up there in the top 10 please check out jimmy johnson's playing one of wayne johnson,s album. The Wayne Johnson Trio. Grasshopper.( as well as others) here is a bit i found....Enjoy..

23.
Nice one.As soon as I find out what a root flat 7th, I will have a go. I have a lesson tomorrow so I will ask. Thanks
Play a Maj scale in say.. G ( dow ray me far so la te dow) then count as you play, 1 =dow 2 = ray 3 = me ETC count the 7th note ( te ) which is F# then just flat it (ie go back a semi) which is F The root is G the Maj flat 7 is F its as simple as that Hence blues chord turn arounds being say 145 ie G=1 to C=4 (back to G) D=5 just easyer than saying 141541, or say a 145 with a #5, = 1, 4,1,5, #5, 1. the #5 is just going a semi up from the 5 to Eflat E.G. when you play say a rock n roll bass line in again G Maj while its right to play a 7th it sounds badd so we nearly always use a flat 7th ie play the notes 1,3,5,6, flat7,6,5,3, repeat. new you can ask for your £10 back cus now you know that
24. i love this reminds me so much of my ex...... If you have not got these in your collection... shame on you go right now to amazon, do not pass go, do collect a cd, they are still playing live, if you get the chance to see them..... GO.
