[quote name='Jigster' post='773853' date='Mar 13 2010, 08:19 PM']is this the tribute series - or do u have a US model?[/quote] hello both are usa, the natural one on the left is a 1989 with the rare "leo fender" signiture on the headstock he was asked to remove it by fender i belive, the red one on the right is an earlyer one just as they changed the headstock and has a different preamp chip, same sounds bit more attack in the higher mids so great for that HONK slap sound. more of a NAAAHH really !! both are very heavy, which i like (and use too from comming from the wal !) the stingray is alot lighter and feels abit flimsey and dare i say it ....cheap !! in comparison which to be fair it is, the g&L is as solid as a tank as any G&L owner will tell you. as "dub junkie" has said you need to get them on stage playing loud,on the stingray it frustrates me trying to get the bottom end to sit tight any one who has a tried a stingray and then a wal or a L2000 will know exactly what i mean, there is that "wooly" low i hate, the g&L on the other hand just leave everything flatt on the EQ and the bottom end is like a bass drum going off its as tight as a gnats chuff and will give any band a SOLID ground i use a swr 500 pro with a swr 6X10 for big gigs and a swr red head for the smaller gigs even through the 2x10 redhead its a bigger sound with the g&L, as the 2x10s are not trying to push the low wooly signals of the stingray, just a much more compact sound of the G&L, that my personal take on it,

The G&L every time, all the guys i know who have had stingrays have or is looking to switch to the g&l there is no doubt it is a natural progression, and the quality and sounds are better, all the stingrays i have had suffer from a weak G string volume and there is not a dam thing you can do about it, i know we have covered this in another thred. i have just retired my wal after 20 years of abuse and the L2000 is the closest thing in terms of power, tightness, range of sounds that i can get, it does everything with power. the red G&L in the pic is an early one, and i use it all the time now and is the dogs. the dam thing is just ALIVE !! with a slap sound that will pin you to the back wall. REG the G string pole pices At first i tried to heat up the g string poles with a solder iron from the bottom even when warm they did not slip through the wax and coils but the A and D ones did you do heve to give them a bit of a push ( dont over do it) mine went through quite easy ? tho i know my friends befor he got rid of it had a bit of a problem getting them to push through...here is a pic after done..... no doubt the strings are much more even in volume now and i dont get drop out when walking over the G string. Hello Green. some good comments there just let me say i dont hate stingrays i like the sound hence still having one, tho i dont use it in favour of the g&l, yes i agree woods like birds eye maple are getting more expensive and i have seen some fantastic birds eye E.B necks, but you must admit the ones for the majority they are making now are of a lower grade wood, im only stating what i see. birds eye aside, just tight grained maple must now be getting expensive, so yes maybe to keep the price affordable they are using a more affordable sub, or fast growing hybrid. i know that now good dark tight grained rose wood is getting hard to get, and alot of guitar makers now use a hybrid rosewood what grows faster hence a more pinky colour, which is a good thing (dont want to start a eco thred here !). as for the battery clip two of my friends stingrays have had probs with these, one was the copper contacts at the bottom had corroded. and the other was the clip at the top hinge had snapped and so now and again the sound level would drop, because the battery would not make good contact i did not mind the two screws and chrome cover as only once every 8 months to undo. but it was relyable Good advice for the day... never drive faster than your gardian angel can fly !

I have had 3 stingrays all with the same problem, as artisan has said the two middle poles A and D are taller, so you cant tilt the pick up to the G string as it just makes the D louder. NOT only this but if you look at the pick up from above you will see the G string is not in the middle of the pole it misses centre by a quarter so its only a quarter over the pole piece, so its not getting the middle of the field. but reg the pole height there is a cure !! on the E.B. stingrays if you want to chance it.... take the pick up out you can leave it connected THE 4 middle poles WILL push down, the 4 outside ones WONT push up because of the coil tensions at the ends, the middle ones will do it slow then when you put it back you can raise the pick up. JOB DONE And remember you heared it here first folks, (or mabe not) the main problem is the pick up is too large for the string spacing Now E.B. know this and could have sorted it out a long time ago but they wont as long as they keep selling, not only this but the whole bass is just Cheep now, that plastic battery compartment is like some thing from the back of a toy from toys are us, the neck now is made from cheep "NEW" wood and is very wide open grain ( not old tight grain) the so called now smooth back of the neck is just sh*t, and soon wares off leaving dark patches, they should of left it varnished, the body is now very open grained, the selection process i think goes like this, if it looks ok spray it naturel, if it looks not bad with some figuring spray it translucent if it looks pants with different coloured woods or miss matched grain ..paint it solid. now there is nothing wrong with this process as everyone does it but you dont know whats under the paint, as the natural ones are now open grained enough. ( with exceptions) leo at musicman never used these cheep woods on the neck or bodys, have a look at the early ones. when leo started th G&L comp he knew what he was doing, i dont want to upset musicman lovers here, and i know it is personal preff. but the G&L L2000 is altogether a far better bass, its heavy solid, like the old MM, the pickups with adjustable pole pieces are just amazing, tonal possabilites are endless, bla bla bla, i still have a stingray and 2 G&Ls L2000 the early one with the control plate on the front and the one without ( with leos signiture on it) and with doube it blows the stingray away, to a point where friends who have stingrays who have tried the L2000 have switched... ALL OF THEM ( 3 ) as said its all personalPreff hope this helps
