1. Listening to Daft Punk always makes me want to chuck it all in But seriously, there's nothing wrong with what you're experiencing. Just think of it as expanding your horizons
2.
Only bands I saw that didn't have something going for them (imho of course) were Slipknot and 30 Seconds to Mars. To be fair to the 'knot I only saw the tail end of their set as I'd watched Black Stone Cherry (awesome.)
I'd agree - had a casual interest in Slipknot for years so was excited to see them, but left to go see BSC after about eight songs cos they just weren't doing anything for me. Whereas Black Stone Cherry were absolutely excellent, great fun and a nice end to the Friday.
3. 1. Wanted to play an instrument - drums were too loud/expensive and everyone was playing guitar, so figured I'd try something different. 2. My Dad plays bass so I got to play on his first, found I enjoyed it. He then paid for my first bass and amp. 3. Steve Harris.
4.
Random John Poole
You heard his solo record yet, the one released earlier this year? Some amazing lines on that, especially tracks like Death of Soul and Into the Sunset
5.
It's a cracking read! And he just published a new book as a result of that massive thread he started on Talkbass, Ghosts and Ballyhoo: Memoirs of a Failed LA Music Journalist. I just started reading it and it's bloody fabulous so far, each chapter has an interlude by Scott Thunes, and boy, are they interesting to read! http://www.amazon.co...ts+and+ballyhoo
Glad you're enjoying; asked for it for my birthday next week so can't wait to get stuck into it if it's a good read
6.
No Aces High???
They did it in the encore I loved it, sound was a bit off but the same goes for every other band that played Download. Best set I've seen them with, though would've been nice to see some of the hits replaced by the rest of the original Maiden England set (Still Life,Die With Your Boots On, Killers etc). Sod buying any of that Trooper beer though - £4.50 and you only get a poxy little bottle of it? Nuh-uh.
7.
As for Klaus, he was nearly 30 when he got his gig with The Dead Kennedys & has been attacking the low end with them ever since. Nice job!
Definitely - solid playing, some great runs, and that tone! Impossible to imagine California Uber Alles or their cover of Viva Los Vegas without the bass intros
8. JJ Burnel Paul Simonon Klaus Fluoride Roger Glover John Entwhistle Mani Duff McKagan 'Random' Jon Poole Geddy Lee Lemmy in his Hawkwind days (much as I love Motorhead his bass style in it doesn't register so well with me)
9.
Didn't like them at the time but have a couple of songs in our set now and really enjoy playing them.
Too right - currently working my way through trying to learn to play all of the debut. Got about half the songs down, even when Mani's at his simplest it's still fun to play.
10. Quite possibly Glenn Hughes on the opening track of Black Country Communion's debut. Punchy but sits nicely in the mix when the rest of the instruments kick in.
11. Excellent idea Ped. Care for a shoe shine and a cooked meal while you decide who gets them?
12. Spacechick and Steve, very nice pieces there. Enjoyed them both immensely and will likely be giving them both a couple more listens this evening
13. Me likey, very atmospheric.
14.
Massive Roses fan here too and I saw the Made Of Stone movie tonight too and loved it) I was at Spike Island in 1990 as a fresh faced 18 year old and that gig moved me so much at the time that I drove home, promptly dropped out of catering college and sold my car to buy my first bass and amp (it was Mani who caught my eye - he just seemed so cool and down to earth... and funky! ) I also made it to the Saturday Heaton Park show last June so yes, tonight a loving old misty eye may have brinked a tad, but I didn't bawl, honest!
Glad you enjoyed it, the devotion so many people have to SR is unbelievable. Love Mani's basslines - everything he plays really contributes to the songs, like they said in the documentary, numbers like Elephant Stone wouldn't have been the same without him. Wish I'd been around when they came to prominence (only twenty at the moment sadly), I've yet to see them live - planned on going to Isle of Wight to see them this upcoming Friday, but it annoyingly clashes with Download festival.
15.
MB1. They've got a new film out that makes grown men cry apparently?
Saw it earlier, big fan of Stone Roses so loved it - not as informative as I'd have hoped from a documentary but still excellent for SR fans. I didn't see anyone crying, but then again we were at the front so there may have been masses of weeping blokes behind us.
16. To be honest, unless it's extremely laid-back, easy listening music or else an acoustic gig, I wouldn't bother watching a band whose members are sitting down - I like groups who try and engage the audience a bit, and it's harder to do that and draw attention to yourselves sitting down than it is standing up. Makes them look like they can't be arsed more often than not too, like they're just going through the numbers rather than making an effort. +1 to what Dingus said about practising playing while standing up, it does make a massive difference. I once played a gig with a bloke who was used to sitting down while playing, and he ended up having to lean against a wall throughout most of the set. Didn't particularly suit numbers like Run To The Hills, really.
17.
I'm sure you'd happily take the royalties though, wouldn't you?
O' course, I was only being facetious (I am using that word right, aren't I? No time to check as off to Manchester in two seconds as soon as I tear myself from BC)
18. As happy as I am for you and as much as I'm enjoying listening to the music (very atmospheric, excellent material) I simply can't bring myself to congratulate someone for being involved with Hollyoaks in any way Seriously chuffed for you though
19. Too many ideas...problem is they're mostly bad ones! Getting the groundwork laid out for a track now, getting the sounds that I'm after is proving to be a pain in the arse though.
20. 25 songs just for an audition? Christ no.
21. Very tight player, I didn't used to appreciate it but listening to Rust in Peace it's obvious that he's damn talented. Travelling up to Manchester to see them tomorrow, should be great.
22. Excellent playing, very impressed - kudos on getting to play with the Lambrettas too, top act.
23. Great picture...think I might embarrass myself by entering this month. Won't be anywhere near the standard of the compositions I've heard from other people though Will get on it once I've gone out for a walk and mulled it over.
24.
There's a 12th fret ???
That's on a 'Need to Know Only' basis.
