1. Happened once or twice when I was playing with my punk band - a few times I went up Birmingham or to another band's show and would run into someone who'd seen us play before and recognise me from it. Really meant a lot to me that we were leaving an impression, and that they remembered the bass player of all people - hopefully for the right reasons
2.
+1 When someone starts a band they pull together people they know and like. There usually follows a period of "readjustment" when some of those faces don't fit as well as was first thought. Ability, attitude, commitment and location are all reasons for a P45. That's just the way it goes. I wouldn't record until everyone's on the same page and up to speed.
Exactly right IMO. Don't get me wrong; it's great that your band leader's setting goals and pushing the group to get something accomplished, but I can't see any reason to set a definite date until the songs have been completed and you're all happy with them.
3. Trying out for a band and being told by the singer 'It's good that we've got a proper bassist going for it, and not just some amateur trying to play guitar on it'. Still didn't get the gig, but the fact that I got thought of as more than a failed guitarist meant a lot.
4. Excellent, like I say they've got a great sense of humour (even if they do mostly sing about trains) I'll keep an eye out for your band's shows in future, I've heard you guys mentioned once or twice at punk gigs but never actually seen you live.
5.
Cheers and thanks. Am like a kid in a sweet shop so much choice, am looking forward to seeing my friends Goldblade amongst others :-)
Oh yes, fantastic group. You're really making me regret not booking time off You're on right after Drongos for Europe, aren't you? They should hopefully get the crowd buzzing before you come on, never seen a bad audience at a Drongos gig.
6. Was thinking of it but left it a bit late now...great festival and there's always a great selection of CDs and Vinyls on sale, but they get the same acts in too often for me to be bothered more than every few years. Bit gutted I'll be missing Jello Biafra though, he was great in 2011. One of the bands I love, Eastfield, are playing the Friday so catch 'em if you can, great sense of humour to em. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DumjC2EYLgo Good luck with your set and all
7.
Michael Jackson
Yes. His vocals get on my tits a bit but the bass is almost always excellent.
8. Happy birthday Clarky, hope you have a smashing day
9.
Love this bass intro, simple but effective. And what a tone!
Hell yeah, never known Jello play with a poor bass player. Everything on that album is absolutely stellar.
10. Family are never really bothered...apparently it gets to my elderly neighbour every now and again, at which point her prize cow of a daughter comes round, speaks to me like I'm something on the bottom of her shoe, and I use the headphones instead for a few days (which makes playing along to songs much more difficult). I nicked a few pieces of carpet from work about two years ago; they go under the amp and my electric drums to lessen the vibrations a bit.
11. Got in for my birthday a few weeks back, read a few chapters but keep getting distracted with Terry Pratchett novels between readings. Excellent book from what I've read, very interesting.
12.
I was under the impression that he just held the guitar up to his face and did hammer-ons with plenty of gain. No teeth involved at all.
Well yeah but it looked good. And doubtless if I did that it'd sound better than my normal playing
13. If Hendrix could play guitar with his teeth, I can play bass with mine
14.
I was in a Wildhearts tribute band for a bit (well, we never technically broke up, so I kinda still am ),
You guys better still be together man, you were excellent!
15.
The Ramona's are supposed to be awesome!
Can testify for the Ramonas; saw them a few years ago and they were everything you'd want from a Ramones tribute, tonnes of energy and fun to be found. On inventive names, I'm sure I've heard of a tribute to Bon Jovi called By Jovi - never seen them but the name cracks a smile every time.
16. Lemmy ill? I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be a harbinger of the apocalypse.
17. Nice stuff, Break The Cycle puts me in mind of Megadeth and the other tracks are pretty cool too.
18.
this guy old school sound all the way!
YES YES YES. One of my favourite songs and bass intros ever.
19. Very important to me these days - didn't used to matter to me so much but these days I have little interest in hearing music that doesn't put forward something interesting lyrically - whether it's just rhymes that haven't been used a million times before or else an unusual song topic, if a song has lyrics I need it to do something different to what I've heard before.
20. Good luck mate, let us know how it goes
21. Been spending more time on the drums than bass recently but due to being knackered after work today I instead took half an hour to learn most of the bass to Stone Roses 'I Am The Resurrection' - great fun to play to, brill line.
22.
Yep. I'll go along with that. But you forgot Tank.
I had to stop myself there; once I get talking about my favourite JJ basslines it takes a lot to shut me up You are quite right of course though; though not as immediately noticeable as a lot of his other lines on the album Tank still remains a great track that would be far poorer without Burnel's aggressive approach.
23. Saw them in Brum earlier this year and off up Newcastle with my mate on Saturday to see them. Great stuff in Brum, as you say support acts are great - can't say I'm big on Eureka Machines' music but they put on a good live show. And no-one can compete with the madness of Baby Godzilla live.
24. I think everyone feels like that, though a lot of the time you're the only one who'll pick up on it. Plenty of times I've been told I've played excellently on 'off' nights (both during gigs and practices) so if it helps, you're probably not doing as badly as you think you are. Best thing is to not let it get to you IME; being frustrated about not being on the ball will just lead to much more noticable mistakes and lapses - just carry on if it's a gig and try to enjoy yourself, if it's a practice then try playing something different or relaxing a bit more. All IME of course.
