1. Fantastic. I can grab this for my Mum's birthday in late March and have it nicked and sitting in my own collection by April
2. Amazing efforts from all involved, loved Leonard Smalls' effort but for me Dad's just about had the edge so voted for that.
3. Great show. My favourite was always the Eddie Vedder vs. Scott Stapp match...'Gimme back my voi-oi-oice!' 'It's my voice too-oo-ooh!'
4. Rush's YYZ, assuming that you are all Godlike at playing your instruments. Otherwise, I'm hard pushed to think of anything that'd be suitable for a covers act - most instrumentals tend to only be known by diehard fans of the original band. Though speaking purely for myself, I'd love to show up at a gig to see the aforementioned Losfer Words being played
5.
So ... 128 posts and Aerosmith don't get a single mention.
To be fair, as good as Aerosmith are at writing hit songs, I think most of their albums have a couple of weak tracks that, while not bad unto themselves, detract from the quality of the record as a whole. Toys in the Attic is by far my favourite album by them, but even then there's still two or three tracks that I can never seem to get into when listening to it. Just my ten cents, I'm sure there's many who'll disagree
6. Was considering it but the lineup for Hellfest blows it out of the water for me - Sabbath, Maiden, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Queensryche, Status Quo, Soundgarden - so I'll be going for that instead. Well worth the travel to France. Hope all those going to Soni enjoy it immensely though; they should do if it's anything like it was when I went in 2010. One of the better organised festivals I've been to.
7.
listening to again right now after several yours. Indeed!!
I'd only heard Highway Star and Smoke on the Water off it till about a year ago, then I found it in my Mum's vinyl collection and stuck it on - loved it from the word go. Not a bad track on there, they all compliment each other, and for me it's the perfect length - manages to retain energy throughout without outstaying its welcome.
8. Definitely Deep Purple's Machine Head for me, from the opening to Highway Star to that amazing riff in the chorus of Space Truckin it's a phenominal album. One of my favourites.
9. I really like all their albums, Yield was a definite high point for me (I'd say that lyrically they were best from Ten-Vitalogy though). Mind Your Manners is a great track but not really indicative of the rest of the album - it's still not a bad record, but none of the other tracks have the energy of MYM and there's a couple of forgetable ones on there.
10. I certainly thought it was an odd way of promoting the product; had I not seen and enjoyed the band on the tour it would've put me off buying the DVD.
11. Jesus Nige, what've you got me onto here? I've been listening to these since I got back from work today and my recent resolution to not buy any CDs till after Christmas is about to be broken
12. ...well I really liked it anyway. Best song I've heard in a while.
13. We had a bunch of keyboards; anyone wanting to learn anything different had to bring the instrument in themselves. Whenever I'm cleaning schools for work now and I see the number of instruments in the music rooms I always make sure to have a good moan about how different it was back in the day...never mind that I left school five years ago and most of the other workers are in their 40s/50s
14. Jealous? Me? Nahhhhhhhhh...not at all... Good on ya, that's unbelievable. What an excellent experience.
15. 'Bass should be played in such and such a way...' always turns me off, because of how many varying opinions there are on exactly what purpose bass should play and how much it should stand out - whatever works for me and the band I'm playing with at the time is what I'll stick to. Think how naff the Stranglers would be if JJ Burnel had been told to keep it simple and put focus on the guitar instead.
16. I like Children of Bodom but live they don't do much for me to be honest - they play extremely tightly, but to me they lack the energy I'm really looking for at a gig, just been a by the numbers performance each time I've seen them. Still, good to know you enjoyed them, they've certainly got some cracking songs.
17. Not my thing, in all fairness, but I can't deny your playing is fantastic - I know I couldn't replicate it in a million years. Great work, extremely creative, two thumbs and and a few toes up from me
18. Godsdammit, that's another thing I've now got the urge to learn Some bloody tasteful playing there.
19. Shame that, had an audition for a band there once before, seemed like a good place. Hope they can get some of the stuff back.
20.
First Chris introduced a song by saying we only play this when we are in bleak English towns like this one (nice).
Never understood why so many people take offence at things like this at gigs - like you say, it's a true comment, and I interpreted it as tongue-in-cheek anyway. I'd agree that the end was pretty unprofessional, largely down to Sheppard but it wouldn't have taken much for Cornell to come up to the mike once it was obvious that he wasn't coming back on and say something along the lines of 'Thanks for coming, goodnight' rather than leaving the crowd milling around to wonder what was going on.
21.
I enjoyed the gig overall did you? Do you agree the bass had better clarity after they gave up on the ampegs? The guy with the ricky in the support band didnt cut through much where we were stood either so maybe some engineer/venue fail too?
I did to be fair, though thought it went a bit downhill the last few songs (still enjoyable, but thought Sheppard could've handled the issues with the bass better - I know it must've been frustrating, but when I've paid forty quid for a ticket I'd expect him to at least look like he still wants to be there rather than pulling a mardy face at the crowd before storming off) and the ten minutes of feedback at the end didn't do anything for me really. Other than that, good gig - nice to hear the newer stuff and the openers of Let Me Drown and Spoonman were perfect. I'll be honest, I couldn't really tell a huge difference in bass sound from where I was after the ampeg issues - partially down to tiredness and two hours of headbanging, but I don't think the Academy's ever brought out the best sound for any band I've seen there in all fairness.
22. I was there, was a fair bit off to the side about halfway down the crowd though so didn't get a brilliant view of what was going on (other than having a face like thunder on him for the last few numbers then throwing his bass over his shoulder and storming off at the end).
23.
I've stood next to punters in the toilets at my own gigs and not been recognised ...
In all fairness, most people spend their time in toilets trying looking anywhere but the bloke piddling next to them
