1.
It really frustrates me how something which starts off realy interesting and exciting can devolve so quickly on talkbass. Yes it is a much larger community than BassChat, but this place seems pretty fair, open and self governing whereas more and more TB seems to be becoming more closed and heavily moderated, not to mention more heavily infested with unhelpful contributors. I use it as a database as it is full of some great reviews and insights, but I try to keep away from all the speculation and what not, lest I suffer the banhammer for expressing my own opinion!
Don't forget the endless "What colour wraps should I have on my strings?" threads - or "Join my '67 Precision with tortoiseshell scratchplate club" threads - it's what makes Talkbass BE Talkbass.
 2. Playing covers one after the other with no banter inbetween or anything else to differentiate between one band or A.N.Other - or - play the originals at home on your hi-fi with a few mates around & pay a lot less for the drinks? How many pubs a week was it were we saying not so long ago that are either closing or doing away with bands in preference for kareoke?
 3.
not seen Gavin &stacey. Won't watch it now, can't stand the buffoon. All I know about him, was when the 2010 football world cup was on , his smug mug was always on the telly. I switched off when I saw him. Having said that , I should've switched off the 'football'. Richard seems like a nice bloke tho'
Believe it or not his auto-biography had more padding than Katie Price's third one; belly-shots a plenty - and more filler than the Polycell factory.
 4.
the americans all live in the land of the free......except on TB! We shall have no arguing here, unless we are wrong, then we shall delete you!
Was it deleted for the arguing - or by the OP for self-preservation?
 5.
Hi Guys, Does anyone have any suggestions for instrumental breaks the bassist and drummer can play while waiting for the guitarist to re-tune his guitar during a gig? I hate those long drawn out silences once the singer has stopped interacting with the crowd. Cheers, Col
Depends what kind of set you do I would say; in the good old days of yore Slade used to do a verse & chorus of Bolan's "Hot Love" for that exact reason; H's John Birch guitars could be a sod for staying in tune. It gave Nod a chance to go off for a couple of beers & then take the piss when he got back.
 6.
Have these people lost their f***ing minds? Since when did geekage become a competitive sport?
Round about the time that this first went on Youtube; B-b-b-baby you just ain't seen nothing yet! How many of these people commenting find it impossible to differentiate between life & fantasy? Check out teh comments from about 2-3 months ago & previously............. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNxhrPaaCA4
 7. I had a girlfriend for a while in Kirkintilloch if that counts? Many a good night had at The Cat Hoose & gigs at The Barrowlands & Academy.

 10.
Had it. Only went and gave it away.....Doh!!!
I nearly did! To a Who fan I know - it is an excellent read, and after seeing him in a few i'views I really like that during his entire life he enthused about the sound he was making. Whether you like how he preferred to sound is another thing - but I'd be happy if I had half of his ability.
 11.
What would you prefer? 2 high quality guitars/basses and a good quality low wattage amp OR 1 high quality guitar/bass, a good quality low wattage amp and a custom high wattage amp ???
I have the 2nd option, but more by accident than design.
 12.
The first 7 seconds of this sends shivers up my spine (and the rest), I don't believe I've ever heard a more powerful intro to a song in my life
Now I really, really love the Stones - I've never yet heard anyone cover any of their songs better ............................. apart from this.......... the rasping bass, the manic playing, the perfectly timed false end (damn - I gave it away) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBFVdxQgALw
 13. As an underage drinker, in a cabaret nightclub that my beloved Slade had been reduced to playing after punk destroyed any cred they had left. I'd had to borrow my Dad's clothes to pass for age to get in. Up until then Slade had never been known en-masse for any technical ability, the songs were there to jump around to etc. In the 1978 set they included for the first time a cover of Cochrane's "Something Else". In the middle was a chorus of "Pistol packin' Mama", after which as they played the lights slowly dimmed until out of the darkness roared the most grindingly awesome sound I'd ever heard. As the lights came back up they revealed Jimmy Lea with his custom bass; which years later I found out was active with an onboard overdrive. It's notes sang & positively whined when he went up the dusty end. It was only "Purple Haze", but I'd never heard anything like it. I decided there & then I HAD to have one; & the road to that end was my first EB3 - and 22 years later a John Birch custom EB3 wired with an identical overdrive by JD. They kept it in the set for a couple more years............
 14.
Le*non See, I did it. Said I would.
What's Gallagher's kid got to do with it?
 15.
The last time I drove through Moffat I was surprised to see that I couldn't discern the ACG workshop. I would have thought they'd have a sign outside saying 'best basses in the British Isles made here'.
He moved - partly - because he kept getting broken into at his old address; so I'd doubt he'd think that was a good idea. I've never owned a JayDee but i've a lot of time for John. After John Birch died, with my bass not quite finished, JD was the nearest luthier with a direct link to JB, so he wired my bass up excactly how JB would have done, at the same time telling me a few tales about how manic his days with JB were.
 16. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hiwatt-200-Guitar-Bass-Head-Amplifier-Amp-/160726544129?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Amplifiers_RL&hash=item256c0c6f01 Bought new in '08, it's a MG special, has a top like a patchwork quilt, a mocked-up back that fits where it touches & has no ventilation grill, a missing cover off one of the handle clasps, was allegedly "sparingly gigged" and seller thinks it's "good overall condition" for £1300??
 17.
Last time I passed Bostons it's owner had just got given 25 years in the pokey and there was a large group of Rastafarian looking gentlemen loading the contents of the shop into a van. I'm assuming your bass is now being played in a reggae band down in Brixton.
Last time I saw Roddy Jnr was in Chambers Street after he got out; he'd lost a stack of weight & said he'd got stuck on junk while he was inside.
 18. In some ways yes, but in cold reality it was a dog. An EB0 converted quite badly into an EB3, with an awful DiMarzio 1 instead of the mudbucker. I saw it after I sold it in the window of the legendary "Bostons" [s]fence[/s] junk shop in Edinburgh & it was even worse; AND they wanted £265 for it (This was in the mid 80's "has to be a custom or nothing" era.) The logo was smashed & the headstock had numerous fag burns in it. It wouldn't have got that way if I'd kept it - but it would have cost a fortune I didn't have to renovate it. s/n 90***9 if anyone has it?
 19.
You would have to be, like a Managing Partner in a Legal 500 firm, or something, to be able to afford 6 Gold Lions. But if you are up for it, I think can pull 6 out of my box for what they can go for on eBay. Or top up Foxen's cute brace with 4 more....
Said the guy with a glass fruit bowl with THE most expensive display of valves I ever saw in my life!
 20. Is it a Dan Armstrong Plexi bass? hardly any wonder you can hardly see it?
 21.
There were loads in Edinburgh and isn't Vinyl Villians still on the go down by Elm Row?
It is yeah, that's why I named it as a good one; they had a shitload of Beatles Polish postcard singles a while ago; they have another branch on Sth Clerk St but that's mostly CDs & (whisper it quietly) .............cassettes.
 22. Not a "guts image" as such, but if anyone's interested I can probably take (eventually) a pic of what was done to change two of the speaker outs into a slave out & DI level??
 23. Edinburgh used to have what claimed to be the biggest used record shop in Britain, in Forrest Rd; it was huge! Last I saw it was an Australian theme bar. It does still have a decent-ish 2nd hand record shop at Vinyl Villains - and there are two or three other such shops in Edinburgh. Number One son Daniel San collects vinyl up to a point & his band put out an LP last year, which got some good reviews in it's genre.
 24. Took a cap of skin off the inside of a knuckle with a Stanley knife, doing a quick replacement of a jack plug on a lead many years ago. Gaffer tape has 1001 uses!
 25. yeah, it was OK - but why did they have Tom Petty introducing it?
