Thanks. I've just spoken to him and he quickly decided it's "beyond economical repair". These are about £180 new and, without even seeing my combo, Dave said that it wouldn't be worth fixing! Time to go shopping for a replacement? What shall I buy?
If that was just over the phone I'd be wary of putting any business his way, especially since you're local.
Taking the front off the cab though, the cone grinds like buggery, very tough to move. Don't have meter at home but pretty sure that's the issue right?

If the coil travel is impeded, than a recone or new chassis is the only way out of that
If something is "grinding" it sounds to me like the magnet issues, will a recone fix that?? (Asking, not denying btw) I was at a gig once where a magnet was well seized to the point where the speaker started smoking with being unable to move but still getting a signal.

Electric vs. acoustic bass for acoustic trio?
Big_Stu replied to lewyyy's topic in General Discussion
Being pedantic I would have thought that the whole point of going acoustic is to use acoustic gear. With that in mind when I'm of a notion to play one of my electro-acoustic guitars I play thru a Line 6 30w amp & the channels & settings on that give me the best of both worlds. -
Advice on posting a Bass without a Hardcase
Big_Stu replied to algmusic's topic in General Discussion
Obviously depends how far it's going & how it's being sent. Not that it's something I've done on a regular basis- but the only other option - unless you can blag some packaging from a guitar shop is gonna be so expensive you'd be as well getting a case. I'd at least be looking at double-boxing with a layer of foam/packing about 4 inches thick between each one. I sent a Hiwatt head to the US doing that; the outer box wasn't much smaller than a coffin - and still one of the mains lights was smashed when it arrived. -
This is classic signs of a dead valve. It can be pretty harmful to the rest of the amp to keep trying to use it, the fuse is there to cut power before damage occurs, but they aren't always fast enough.
Heartily agree with this; it's asking for serious trouble. Any S/H valve amp should always be thoroughly checked out by a qualified tech, unless you know the seller well - and heard the amp going for quite a while - & even then it's no guarantee. As already said - check out the "Recommended amp techs" thread.

Maplins used to do a very reasonable price on an Eminence Delta 15. you may get lucky with putting a speaker in & find that it doesn't need tuning; I did exactly that with a Marshall 2 x 15 cab, even though it was then 4x the wattage. Can't find online what the wattage/ohmage of your cab is, but the Eminence is 400w at 8 ohms. Switching over is as easy as a screwdriver & possibly a soldering iron for two spots at the most.

ORANGE Matamp Lead 200. why you no be on sale any were >.<
One sold on ebay not that long ago, somewhere between two and three grand, lot of my network were haggling what they were going to bid to try not to compete with each other. Also, it is important not to believe anything you read on planetoftheamps.com, in this case especially about Black Sabbath, they speciifically didn't like oranges (too clean) and are in the vid as backline on TV shows (Orange's marketing thing).
Especially the Musicladen show from Germany who had a full Orange setup in the studio. -
Looks like the same kind of place as makes genuine Chinese Rickenbackers for a third of the price with Gibson pickups fitted etc.
I will be totally pedantic at this point and confirm that 9v PP9 batteries have indeed got larger as a few years ago I had to enlarge the battery cavity on my 1981 Hofner SB7, and if like me you still enjoy looking at slides through one of those old plastic battery powered viewers you may also have noticed that that 1.5v 'C' cells have also put on weight. Has the world gone mad ?
I bought a clock recently from an artist who hand paints them. He said, as he fitted a cheapo battery to it, "don't go putting the super batteries in it; your Duracells & Energizers when it needs one". "Huh?" I said, "They're too big, not standard size, they'll sprain the metal contacts". "Never!!" I said, So he showed me ............. and he was right.

Bit of a "How long's a piece of string". Depends on how good a job was done of the de-fret more than anything; some folk like having the slots filled with a contrasting wood or filler for appearances sake, some want the sleek all one piece board. Like all things being sold it's a case of the right buyer finding the right item & seller at the same time. Luckily there seems to be a bit of a resurgence in fretless palyers recently - unless they've all just decided to come to BC, so the demand should be there.

Being picky, the bridge itself isn't the ashtray, that's the optional cover which goes over the bridge to stop any knarled hands & such, AFAIK it's only some of the CS guitars that come with them fitted now, though you can pick one up generally easily on Ebay or a Fender dealer. Only downside is that you won't then be able to pick over the pickup. I've found that the only time it can get painful is if you do a lot of right hand muting, palm muting, then a saddle screw on the E can get a bit sore into the heel of your hand; I could of course remove it & file it a bit shorter; but I've never got a round tuit.
My '66 Precision has both. It came with a tug-bar and I've added a thumb-rest. It is now a far more balanced, zen sort of bass ...
My first ever EB3 had both, never used them but liked the look of them, since the tug bar was in ebony on the scratchplate & the thumb-rest was in mahogany just next to the mudbucker & they were carved into a curve not a block. I've seen them alone go for £55 each on Ebay recently.

I just know that by "throw it away" you mean take a bag of them to your recycling depot once a month, or the special bin at your local supermarket.

Do you think that "Real" Musicians era is going to end ?
Big_Stu replied to MusicLover20015's topic in General Discussion
They said the same during the synth invasion of the New Romantic era - aaaah great days! but we've still had stacks of guitar based bands since then. Just swings & roundabouts, get your nose to that grindstone & good luck! -
Do Thomann usually provide a tracking number?
Big_Stu replied to EssentialTension's topic in General Discussion
Too far back to remember, but what I do remember is that it arrived the day after they said it was shipped, next day delivery - from Germany! -
Hi chaps. I've noticed that my 410 has acquired a slight "background buzz". I've tried different amps, bass, cables etc - and the cab seems to be the culpret. I even cleared the room out to make sure it wasn't anything nearby (son's lego box was the primary suspect!).
I had that once - on the advice of an older player who had a bigger T-shirt collection than me - he traced it to a loose glass lampshade on the ceiling light.
No speaker on a valve amp normally means burnt out output transformer very quickly. You're very lucky.

not really if he didn't take it out of standby it wont hurt it.
OP says the bass was plugged in, but doesn't say he played it so far as I've noticed; if he'd hit a note it & had it out of standby it could have been curtains; I've known some folk get away with it & put it down to superior Partridge tranny build. But I've been reliably informed by some valve amp techs that an amp without cabs plugged in isn't in any danger until a load is put on the amp - ie. you try to play through it. It's been covered umpteen times on here & other forums.

Yeah, but so long as fans like Dave Graham are making things like this available, you'll be able to remember what was........... Slade's regular final encore for around 15 years.............. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHr5tN9u5tI
I have this wild ambition that I win the lottery and get enough money to tempt them back in to a re-union tour.
Nod says it's already been done - and he still refused. Personally I'm glad, they're all in their mid-60s now - but Nod looks 10 years older (Nod last week) - and he hasn't played publicly for 20+ years - and even that was blood from a stone time. (Unless you count the few acoustic versions he did for The Grimleys) I think it would be an embarressing comparison to how they once were. Dave & Don stay in their comfort zone doing what they do, Jim did his solo gig 10 years ago - and steadfastly says "never again" when asked.
