1. I can't concentrate on the bass playing
2. No problems from Thomann here
3.
Newbie here! My name is Jaymi...some of you I have talked with on other forums about basses...I have 3 Jaydees and quite a number of Rickenbackers...Been playing forever, live in the US and play tours, sessions etc....I am always up for a good chat and of course, like to trade(exchange basses)...anyone wanting a nice Ricky, let me know...I am always up for another Jaydee.... Cheers!
3 Jaydees! Welcome.
4. but it'll be good to see you in Bournemouth. Loads of gigs down here. Let me know when you get settled and i'd be happy to meet up for a beer. Fantastic jam sessions going on locally these days which would be a good way for you to meet other musos.
5. Love that stuff too. Delfonics, Patti LaBelle. Bit funkier than Motown.
6.
Okay, let me rephrase that - you guys were excellent Venue was Blandford Corn Exchange, summer of 1980 or '81? The frontman had yellow hair (not blond), really tight-curled. Very, very exotic-looking, in that place and time - at least to me, I was young and innocent. I vaguely remember wondering at the time why the bass player sounded so English, or maybe so not-South-African.
Amazing! I can't remember those days at all. Phil was the afro haired front man who is now an MP back in the new SA. We did some amazing gigs back then driving around in a beat up transit van. We all lived in the same house with a basement that was the rehearsal room. Crazy days.
7. There was an interview on the radio with a very famous Jazz sax player. He is world renowned and in his 70's. He is still doing around 3 to 4 hours of practise every day. It never stops. The more you know the more you realise you don't know. Maybe look at the whole thing as a life long journey with no destination.
8. Some interesting coments on this thread. I watched a guy called DK Marlowe who has a site called PlayBassNow.com. He did a vid where he showed how he does his online recordings. Everything he does goes through a £70 interface and guess what? His basses mostly sound the same cos he tends to use the same effects template for each bass. Don't get me wrong, they sound great .....but the same.
9.
Strangely enough, that was the first bass line I ever learned... like when it was in the charts. Not my type of music but my brother played it all the time and it got into my head and it seemed like a good place to start. I'd been playing punk riffs on guitar prior to that.
Just pleased that is was done on a real bass and not a synth like a lot of the other tunes i have been asked to learn. Quite a nice tidy bassline.
10. SADE - Smooth Operator (its got a solo bit) CHAKA KHAN - Aint Nobody (stupid synth line) GEoRGE BENSON - Gimme The Night (another synth bass line)
11.
Was that band called Day One? I saw them in Blandford, they were excellent.
Yes it was
12. I didn't find that a Jazz P config worked for me. I tried it on a Fender Precision Lyte. To my ears it didn't sound like the best of both basses. I did the only honorable thing and got both
13. Welcome mate. I am in Dorset so not so far from you. I played with some guys from SA way back in the 80s. They'd basically escaped the regime and were political exiles. The BBC did a documentary on them, a programme called "Open Space". Anyway i got really excited and when the BBC turned up they didn't want to feature me as i was English Anyway, enjoy the site its informative, funny and annoying all at the same time.
14. Another vote for just playing. I can't think of any reason not to do all my warm ups on a bass. On cold gigs i either go into the loos and find a hand dryer or into the car with the heater blowing. I did find a couple of warm cushions on the front of our singer but she tookoffence when i tried to use them.
15.
Well, before the sampling laws stopped them, a lot of hip hop acts were creating whole new songs from sampling other songs - often those samples were unrecognisable, or were reworked in a novel way. Public Enemy for example made a completely new sound from chopping up other peoples' music and adding their own vocals. Aren't they musicians? Or do they get to be called musicians because they contribute vocals, but DJs don't?
I dunno. Its confusing. I threw out an obvious difference between someone who uses a musical instrument and someone who doesn't - but the lines are blurry. Looking at a dictionary site a DJ can easily be part of the definition. 1. a person who makes music a profession, especially as a performer of music. 2. any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music.
16.
I would agree with everyone on here- I have an LM2 and it will go far louder than you could use- I think like me most people use them flat with a little VLE or VFP dialed in, depending upon the cab.
+1 we must be twins as thats how i set mine up If the LMII is not a future classic i'll eat my hat. I remember (about 150 gigs ago) when i first tried the LMII and how it completely blew me away. Still does. The only thing that could change would be the D.I. by putting a pre-EQ which they addresses with the LMIII For tubiness has anyone mentioned getting a pedal of some description?
17. There is a difference though because a musician can create a song from nothing. They need a few chords a melody and bang you have a song. A DJ needs to have another persons material to be able to create something.
18. Lucky buggers. Must be lovely turning up, plugging in and playing.
19.
I suppose the easiest solution is if you find it boring then don't come on here. Forum participation is not mandatory as far as I am aware.
This
20. I got mixed feelings on this one. As a muso i like to play solos. When i go to a gig i want to hear grooving. For me one short solo on the bass is enough for an evening but if i were listening to a maestro then i'd want to hear more than that. You asked - "Do you think that as the musician, you should be able to take control musically and the audience should appreciate that". No i really disagree with that. The audience don't have to do diddly if they don't want to. Making assumptions about what the audience should or should not do is just wrong.
21. I don't really agree with the notion of "Talent". Talent suggests some element or unknown ingredient that favours an individual. I don't believe in it. Some people may be more physically adept or think in a way that is more condusive to the thing that we might call them talented in but thats not talent. I prefer to say skill which i see as the result of hard work. In almost every biography i have read of people who have excelled in their field the common thread is dedication and hard work.
22. TBH no although i am a real anal gear person and everything gets returned inside the bubble wrap and then the box when i have finished. I NEVER leave the pedal on the floor! Crikes, someone might step on it
23.
YYZ
Thats the pinnacle for me. The Moving Pictures album was their zenith.
24. I am running around with a set list of about 50 tunes at the moment all kept in my extremely limited brain. This set has been built up over 4 years. I'd hate to have to learn it all in a week! Once, in a similar situation i wrote out all the chords on "proper" music paper. Worst thing i ever did as i ended up totally relying on the chord sheets and not assimilating the tunes.
25.
I notice that too - looks like the pickups aren't in the covers properly.
Yeah i saw that. On 3 Jazz basses that i have the strings are:

closer to the PuPs
run between the poles and not beside them
B
