1. 1981, Harewood Youth Club, Bournemouth. We were an aspiring heavy rock band (what else do you play when you are 15?) and our set included Ace of Spades, some AC/DC, Sabbath and other rock classics. I was soooooooooo nervous that i remember shaking like a leaf to the point that it was difficult to hit the strings. We'd all tanked up on cider for a bit of courage and carried our guitars on foot to the gig through a graveyard and across a park. As we got going we noticed that the drummer (my brother) and his kit were sliding towards the front of the stage so a mate jumped up and held the kit whilst my bro bashed it about. The gig went by in a flash. The bug had bitten.

3. Be interesting to hear what MusicLover20015 thinks about these comments.
4.
Bad day, mr dread? There are many very naive people about who make assumptions without checking the details. IMO, only a fool would tell their wife they are getting loads of cash to spend from record company advance before knowing the facts. An advance is basically a loan, an investment. It's not for a f***ing kitchen
I have highlighted the most accurate and perceptive comment that i have seen on Basschat for some time...
5. Welcome to the forum. You'll get a lot of difference answers to your very good question on this forum. First off i'd say the decision is a biggy and one that will influence the rest of your life so choose carefully. I'd follow that up with there isn't a wrong or right decision - its just a decision and what you do with the outcomes will determine how you get on. Studio session work is rarer i would say at the moment than it was before the cut and paste generation came into being. There is still work on cruises, hotels, pit work, high end function stuff etc but it is a global market with auditions using Skype. I know of 3 guys at the moment working the ships all doing a lot of playing and having a ball. 2 of them studied music, 1 of them is insanely highly qualified having post degree stuff, 1 has done 3 years at uni and the other chap has never studied music "formally". They are all equally successfull. Do you need to go to university to do that kind of work? I would say no. If you can read AND busk you should be good to go - you can get experience on the job and have a lot of fun doing it. All that said you might have a ball at uni and meet some like minded souls, form a band and go International Whatever you decide i wish you luck B
6.
I've had nothing but good experiences on here! My first trade was to mutually post guitars on the same day, neither of us had any feedback so we chatted on the phone and exchanged contact details etc, everything went swimmingly! I've had money bank transferred and have done likewise, paypal you name it... The icing on the cake was when Krispn posted me a Pickle Pie-b from Glasgow just so I could have a look at it to know whether I'd like to buy one (not his cos it wasn't for sale), sheer brilliance on his part! I did buy one in the end and I got it back intime for his next band practice too! I've only dealt with solid, helpful, genuine folk on here an dlong may it continue!
I remember it well Andy. Whilst doing the trade a little voice in my head was saying "what are you doing fool". Posting £600 worth of bass without any guarantee is not mormally something i would do. Never had a problem. Everyone i have dealt with has been a complete gentleman(woman). Long may it continue.
7. Great chap - lovely bass.
8. "Future of" tag is the kiss of death in most things. He's just another player. I don't read any music press so am oblivious to whoever the new darlings are in the music media world. Time is the greatest judge.
9.
One band member would often say "I'll play it right at the gig". Glad you're confident because I'm not. This band member also told me she didn't practice at all outside of band rehearsals. She's also the one who eventually called me a 'bully' and said "I'm not going to be made to feel bad for making a mistake - everybody makes mistakes", to which I replied "Not everybody makes the same mistakes for a year". Shortly before I left the band.
What is it with these people? They always cite time as an excuse for not doing stuff but manage to find time to turn up for well paid gigs. I looked over the other day at him playing during one of the songs. It was amazing. He was playing a huge chord, about 9 notes taking his time doing it and it didn't do a jot for the song. Nothing. It just added a layer of noise and distorted any possible funkiness that could have been happening.
10.
From last night, rehearsing a work-in-progress original. Much confusion over the sequence of sections (instrumental chorus, "the bit where it goes to D", etc etc). After the third attempt where all five us seem to think something different is supposed to happen, I suggest that we get a piece of paper and write it down. The guitarist says, "Don't write it down... I won't read it."
Hehe. i remember a mate of mine who asked me what i got for Christmas. I mentioned a book and he looked truly horrified. I said "whats up" and with real meaning he said "fu*k reading"! and he meant it. I am getting a lot of "it'll be alright on the night" or "it'll eventually sound good" when we are getting new material together. The keyboard player learns the tunes chordally but not rhythmically. When i suggest that the timing is wrong he replies with "it'll be alright on the night" - but its not. Its the same.
11. Gotta give a massive thumbs up for some of these. Satellite did a Jazz Bass with a better TORT Pickguard than Fender and a lovely bound and blocked neck. I played one the other day at a Funk jam and it was absolutely stunning. All original except the PuPs. Solid and balanced it was a joy to play. I want one. When young and starting out my mate had one and i had the Columbus. His was much better than mine. I'd get one in a flash - £50! You gotta be joking. What can you get for £50?
12. Joining the Marlowe love-in. Seems like a great guy.
13. It was a completely forgettable night. Sound was terrible and i was getting mean looks from the band as it was very boomy. Turns out to be the keyboard players new monitor! The on stage boom meant that there was no distinction in the bass sound and ended up being a pretty miserable gig. Punters enjoyed it though which is the name of the game.
14. Used to take 2 and still do for "important" gigs but mainly only 1 bass these days. Theres another thread somewhere here where most players have stated that they rarely if ever break strings so you have to wonder why they would need a backup bass.
15.
OK, But, My Dad, rubbish at the Bass, superb on most other things though, he could fix/do anything! sh*t Bass player though.
Not your dad. My dad really is a first rate player who is still pro (though on keys these days). He has traded cabs with Lemmy, jammed with Marc Bolan and played for Duck Dunn and co in Amsterdam! He had one of the first Yamaha basses in the early 70s and was the person to get me started
16. Lakland 55-01 - great sound - really fleixble tone - neck like a tree trunk and string spacing too wide Fender Jazz Mexican 5 String - terrible build quality - dull and boring Stingray 2 EQ - on its own was a lovely bass but never sat in the mix as well as other basses. Neck was a bit hard to get used to Tobias Growler - it was just ok at everything and didn't make me WANT to play it
17. I think maybe the clue is in the name as in Mini Guitar Stands. They are for small guitars. Might feature on that new Ricky Gervais show.
18. That cab will take a pounding. I ran one with a Hartke 350 all at 8 Ohms and never stuggled to be heard. I also ran it with some louder amps and it just sat and winked there saying "Is that all you got". The cab gave me a bad back though
19. 5 and they are in the sig. Do i want more? Yes. Will my family abandon me if i get another? Yes.
20. I prefer the A frame cos it is more sturdy. A good thing about the Hercules is that its so small it looks like the bass is standing up all by itself.
21. Marcus Miller Nate Watts My dad Willy Weeks
22. He might be a great bassist but what a horrible tune. I prefer this picture...
23. I have one. Its always in the gig bag but not my preferred stand. Its not great with Jazz Basses, in fact its not great with any of my basses. Its the least secure stand that i have. Great for a Strat though
24.
Thanks for the confirmation!
ok i am not the quickest off the mark (bass) See what i did
25. Its Post EQ by default.
