1. I like depressing songs. Prefab Sprout - Pearly Gates Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding
2. Its the girls way of muting the strings. You can also achieve a similar effect by using the palm of your plucking hand rested slightly on the strings when plucking/picking the strings. Its a nice effect used in the right conditions. I used it on a recent recording here. http://soundcloud.com/bottome/i-love-dance
3. I don't mean to be a big girly downer but i think it sounds awful. Sorry.
4. I'd say you need as many as you want. I lived with one bass for about 20 years then discovered Basschat. If you gig a lot its probably wise to have more than one. If you record a lot the same applies. The broken string rationale is a funny one cos theres a thread running on here at the moment about the last time you broke a string and most people who have responded haven't broken a string or if they have it was years ago. Personally i have 5 basses because i can and would have more if my wife let me.
5. Haha Doddy is about to run into my old Trombone playing mate who i believe works on the very same ship!
6.
I'd say £45 is worth every penny to see a band like TOP close up. I can't bear those stadium/arena gigs, I'd rather put on the CD and look at the CD cover after I've carefully placed it at the other end of the room.
classic
7.
That may well have had a big influence. A table tob is probably pretty smooth too so would reflect quite efficiently. I dread getting the BOOM as when it's really bad its very disconcerting.
Yeah it was horrible. I was all pleased with myself when i thought to play it an octave up and then right pissed of when it did the same thing.
8. Way to go. Love the bass. Get some glasses to match - i'll get an adult nappy and i think we have the start of a tribute band
9.
That really is amazing! Ooh, and a fellow Streamer CT owner! Pics please!
Hmm loverly. 2 Hamers on the same page. Cashback!
10.
Raising your cab will only help if the issue is being caused by a coupling between cab and a resonant floor. Raised stages often have this problem. In which case something like the Auralex Gramma Pad will help no end. It does however sound more like a standing wave issue. Moving your cab or playing the problem note softer are the only answers. Sometimes only a small move is needed but on occasions a more radical change helps. Hardest part is getting band mates to understand. Must say that you've done well to avoid this for 25 yrs. I get this issue regularly - particularly in smaller venues. If F# is around 47HZ do people out there have rough frequencies for other notes? I personally would find it very helpful to know them.
Thanks I wouldn't say i have comletely avoided it for 25 years - just that its never been anywhere near as powerful and obvious as it was the other night. I chatted to the guitartist last night and he mentioned that there was a great big solid wooden table behind my cab about 12-15 inches away from the rear port on the cab. The table had been turned on its side and was therefore acting like a wall i guess.
11.
Thanks for the feedback gents. I thought this was the case, but just wanted to double check that I'm not going crazy! Having told me that I was good to go at the end of the day and that he was "very happy" with what we'd done, he then called me the next day and asked me to come back free of charge to make up for the fact that I didn't bring a di box... All most unpleasant!
I'd tell the guy to dissapear up his own bumhole
12. This is the one for me.
13. Seen em twice and still getting over how funky they were. Quote from my wife "that is the best band i have ever seen". They are absolutely brilliant live.
14.
obviously theres a market willing to pay that much so i guess thats why they charge it. Shame as students such as myself are priced out of enjoying a really fantastic band. I just don't see why £45 is required. There costs can't be anywhere near the equal to £45 per person times maximum capacity. Just sounds greedy to me.
I don't get it. You think paying that kinda money in an arena of 50000 people is ok but not is a small intimate venue. Surely its the other way around?
15. I really like her. Much better than that Josh Stoner bird
16.
i have never paid £45 for a meal, but i would rather see music played in a big arena with a massive production. I do realise that Tower of Power wouldnt fill say the O2 but you can get tickets for the most in demand artists for £45 with huge a production. Also i guess its partly the fact i'm not a fan of ronnie scotts where i guess some people love the fact they can sit down and watch music and have a ridiculously fancy dinner.
Why would you prefer to be further from the action? I don't get it. You'll get better sound quality at Ronnies than you would at an arena - you can see the artists in the flesh and not on a video screen. It's win win.
17. Yeah £45 - you could probably get a rubbish ticket to a Premisership game or a cheap meal. Get some sense of perspective man. One of the best bands in the world in a tiny venue. Really, some people!
18. In my limited experience there have always been DI's provided.
19. I think it would be sad for you to have to leave if you are enjoying the music side of the band. I am going with the "have a chat" thing. Maybe outside of the band situation. Go for a curry or a beer and see if you can explain why you think he is acting like a teenager and how it pisses you off. Most bands tend to split over non musical issues and things that might be resolved with a conversation. What you're experiencing is quite common IMHO with bands as they do tend to be bit tribal and by definition, competitive. On the other hand, if you have really had enough and don't think you can be bothered honour the gigs you have booked up to a certain date and doff your cap and leave.
20. Some good tips thanks a lot. Would raising the cab a few inches make a difference or are we talking over a foot? Does the height that you raise the cab make any difference. I would have moved my rig but we were tight for space and we were already into the set before i realised. I did play F# more quietly when i knew it was coming. Thing is when you have played a song forever you forget that its a bunch of notes. It did make me think about the notes in the basslines again which i guess is a good thing. Here you go though. Nobody else seemed to flinch or wince as i did when it happened. They didn't notice
21.
It's got a nice Princey/Dan vibe about it.
Thats about the best compliment this song could have. Thanks.
22. Loving this thread. Please take a listen to our latest construction! http://soundcloud.com/bottome/i-love-dance
23.
Play G♭ instead! I'll get me coat.
Never thought of that
24. Here is something i have never encountered to this degree after 25 years of gigging. My covers band were doing a gig in a local pub last night. There is a song that has a bit where the bass drops out on the verse and comes back in again on the chorus with the first note being an F#. When i hit the F# it was like a bomb going off! Ok i know it was fireworks night but to my ears this note sounded twice as loud as any other note i played Next time around i thought ok i'll play it an octave up. Boom! Same problem. Every other note was fine - just F#. I tried to play with the EQ and this helped a little bit but the note was still way louder than all the rest? Any advice on what to do in this situation?
25. Thankfully never during a gig. Last time was at a rehearsal when i was digging in more than i realised
