1. Welcome. to the forum. Im just down the road from you in Chester.
2.
On a slightly more serious note, is that really a Mosrite? The headstock doesn't look right at all.
Its more or less genuine. read this page. It was hand-made by Semie Moseley of Mosrite!
3. for those that havent seen it.
4. where is this bass located ?
5. Korea?! thats news to me. I didnt even know that any Fenders were ever made in Korea?! No wonder it looked a little different.
6. I tried this with some rubber washers, off the top of a Grolsh bottle cap, (or they might have been tap washers, they were of unknown provenance. ie: found in the back of the kitchenn drawer) didnt work though. These felt ones work ok then ?
7. IMHO the 6 bolt neck plate and the headstock decals look wrong. Also never seen a Mex painted like that. But im certainly no Fendexpert
8. Would this take a replacement hipshot rickenfaker bridge ? (I do like it apart from the bridge. Its unfortunate that they are scarce as id love to try one first.)
9.
I totally dig what your saying now mate, its more of a moral dilemma. This fella may believe this to be an original and also feels he has done you an amazing favour by passing this onto you for a snip of the real price. By selling it on may hurt his feelings if he ever questions where it is or how your getting on with it. However you are now 250 less than you had and still dont have a Ric. I would just say to him and take it from there.
See what he says, he will be more surprized than you i have a feeling more upset if he is a family friend. He thought he was doing you a big favour im sure. He may well offer to buy it back himself. Dont make any quick decisions. Give it a week. Play it some.
10.
no idea... i like the feel of it, i like the weight, i like how thin it is and how it looks, makes me feel all Cliff Burton/Lemmy like, but still its not the real thing. was it a bairgain if it was the real thing? hell yes it was, but again it was a 70 year old man selling it to me after being friends of my family for over 40 years, damn he held me in his arms when i was born... so yes, i would believe that we would pass on a Rickenbacker to me since none of his children ever liked music now i just feel like crap and have no idea what to do or think...
I fell for you dude id be pretty broke up too i spose. Like when i bought an XR3 and the gearbox blew up the next day Oh that was a bad one. Sounds to me like it was a genuine accident and no con was intented. Like i said so many people think they have a genuine Ric till they come to sell it many years later. Hey ill give you £250 for it no worries. But i think when you have got over your dissapointment you will be keeping it. Especially as its from a family friend. Plug it in and give it a rip, im sure you will fell better after playing a few old faves.
11.
Not for that price mate!
Fair enough. Yes i would be dissapointed im sure, but not too dissapointed for that price. Id expect to pay at least a thousand Euros more for a genuine Ric of that age.
12. Ibanez? Interesting i wouldn't have thought it was an Ibby but I'm certainly no expert. An old Ibby Rickenfaker can be a very nice bass to own Id have paid £300 for it without a doubt, so £215 is an excellent price. I think you ought to be congratulated for getting such a good bargain..
13. For £250 thats a steal for a nice bass like that, i didnt realize thats all you paid If i got one like that for £250 id be well happy. Once I'd got it I would fit a genuine chunky Ric bridge on it to give it 'the look' then id just be happy id got a bargain, especially if its a good sound like you say.
14. What is the exact model? Rickenbackers are infamous for being abundant with fakes. Some are so good that even 30 or 40 years later they are only just been found out (or not at all) Which i suppose means that they must be pretty good whoever made them Some have owned what they thought was genuine for deacdes and only found out the truth after having it appraised for sale. Re the bridge: There is a similar smaller bridge on the 460/6 MG. Though not the same it does look closer to the one on yours. If it were mine id try it with another bridge of the more famous Rickenbacker style (dont know what they are called) Just because it would look better, and if it also sounds the same or better then keep it that way. However if you paid a reasonable price for it and it sounds and looks good and you are happy with it, then thats all that really matters. Let us know the model number and we can help find out. (not the serial number)
15. Im no expert but that bridge jumps out at you as being out of place. I have one the same on my cheapo Westfield P bass costing £75 new for the entire guitar. Hopefully a Rick expert will be along soon. Where did you buy it from? Surely you saw reasonably detailed pictures of it before paying ?
16. I was reading something from a songbook of tunes from Primus, and the guy was saying that if you cant get your fingers around certain of Les Claypool's tricky chords and harmonics that a good way to approximate certain of them was by using the fretting of two adjacent strings only, ie: the D and G. (He only showed a couple of these that were relevant to the song) Anyway messing around with this it got me thinking that sounding the D and G together makes some sort of chord or pleasing harmonic sound fretted all the way up the neck. Its certainly easier for us afflicted with small hand syndrome than those finger yoga exercises that some can do on a bass (not me obviously) So i wondered is there some sort of chart or some way of finding out what the note is that comes from fretting any two adjacent strings? I tried looking at it via my tuner but it didn't seem to like it. Sorry to be so muddled in my explanations I hope you understand my meaning. If you dont understand please say so and i will try and elucidate.
17. could you not try playing sitting down like Jah Wobble often did/does? I believe a dentists chair was his personal choice.
18.
The very first production batch of the straight SILENT jacks had their sliding collars made with the wrong tolerances which caused them to seize or jam. The later ones can be identified by the rubber body. I've also seen a couple of the right-angle ones fall apart. In every case they were replaced by Neutrik without question. It is possible that some sellers may still have a few of the early ones in stock. On a different tack, Neutrik make the following statement on their web site: "Please note that the signal isn't muted with active electric bass guitars which have a tip-ring-sleeve tap to activate the power supply." I'm not sure that this is true for all active basses as I have no problem with my SR5, so it's really a case of try it and see.
I have both the old and the new type of Neutrik cables purchased from obbm and neither has ever let me down.
19. It sounds like it was his prototype and now he knows what mistakes not to make, so he has made another better model and is getting rid of this as its rather embarrassing and ill bet don't sound too good. I notice none of the usual exclamations of sonic excellence, which is unusual for flea bay.
20. You can join my band if you want. So thats me on bass, you on bass and er well thats it up till now. Pretty unique though two bass players instead of two guitars eh?. Oh and due to the 200 mile distance we can only practice once a year. Sound good to you ? ps, Already got a name for the band we can call it.....wait for it. yes you've guessed it................... Bass 2 Bass. {brainy idea or what. I'll see if i can get the .com and the .co.uk}! pps: I may know a guy on bass who will join us (Its alright though he's left handed so it wont clash with us)
21. I had assumed that everyone used Neutrik cables these days? I mean whats the downside? There is none. If anyone needs any then you can do no better than to buy a few off this guy quoted below me here. ( obbm ) He builds his own high quality cables. I agree though these guys sound a typical idiot brat who have no repect for other peoples stuff, as they were probably given everything they asked for by mummy and daddy. When it broke no matter they whined like a little bitch until they got a new better one. Next time one of them does it accidentally elbow him in the nose a few times.
At one point I considered trying to build a remote controlled VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) that would sit in the effects loop. That way if anyone turned up themselves up, then I could remotely turn them down again.
Id buy one of those today.
22. Ill have a bid i think.
23. When i think of him i always think his hands look big even on that ugly old huge six stringer. But then as i have the hands of a pixie or something im just jealous.
24. This poll tells us at least a quarter of bass customers come away unsatisfied with the strings on a purchased bass. A pretty big percentage, id have thought. Any shop that offered a choice of round or flats would be potentially putting itself in a good place once word got around that it offered this service.
25.
HC's guitar playing was perfectly congruent with the ensemble sound.
yes it was i agree. I just let my annoyance get the better of me here.
You can't just assume that because songs were written mostly for a particular instrument that means it's what instrument you're going to get: my mum got a thin lizzy songbook out of the library yesterday arranged for PIANO!
I have the Thin Lizzy [dedication] the very best of full band songbook in .pdf format if you want it.
