1. Lovely looking bass. How are those fanned frets? I wish id tried a bass with fanned frets at the recent bass day.
2.
Tokai don't make a Rickenfaker bass. Edited to add the word "bass"
Excuse my ignorance, I am late to this Ric copy thing, I need to catch up But why do i see what are supposedly Toaki made Rockinbetter bass all over the shop ? Whats going on there then?
None of the modern copies are stereo, as far as I know. Many of the 70s Japanese copies were stereo though. On the whole these are a lot closer to being replicas of the original than any of the modern ones, so are somewhat more likely to sound like a Rick too. Jon.
If you will indulge me a while longer to ask another question. What are the names of these 1970s Jap' Ric' copies (apart from Ibanez) I just need to know what to search for.
3.
Me too Karl.
me three
Rule No. 1 when you're interested in a shonky, apt-to-get-pulled Rickenfaker listing: message the seller so you have a record of their username, if nothing else.
Aha i never thought of that. good tip
4. I have a hankering to try one of those Rickenfaker copies, so... 1) Which of the Ric copies (Toaki, Probass, Anyothers?) are true stereo basses? 2) Which companies still make new Ric copies and sell them here in the UK (apart from the two i have already listed?)
5. And a second greeting from a Cestrian, the capital city of leafy cheshire.
6.
+1 @ Bloodaxe ^ I've run a magnifier over my MiM P head & it does look like a plastic liner, it's the only 1 of mine that has it.
My Squier, Peavey, and Woodfield all have them. As stated it looks like a bit of pipe cut off to the shape of the hole.
7.
Ach just post it of to Andy at Wizard and he'll re-wind it. Watch you don't send him that manky old Brillo pad from under the sink by accident though.
Thats what it reminded me of Or maybe something similar To be honest at first I thought it was some ancient Egyptian shoe made from papyrus grass or similar.
8. I found a picture of this dead 1940s vintage Gibson pickup on guitar web http://www.sydneyguitarsetups.com/ ps: i was just looking at that site to see a vid of the new Plek pro custom guitar set up machine. Extremely informative and cool look at a precision fret grinding on the machine.
9.
I hope you are luckier with Courriers than I have been. My new ACG was shipped last Wednesday on a 24hr service and it's still not here. It's stuck in a cold damp warehouse somewhere and still no confirmation as to when it will come. Apparently all the carriers are trying to clear the backlog created by the snow and are dealing with that first. I would add however that I sent the Pleasure Board to Nottingham last week on 48-hour ParcelFarce and it turned up exactly on time.
Sorry to hear that obbm, I hope it delivered very soon in good order.
10.
I made the payment to Mr Shuker this morning and my new toy will be sent out tomorrow. It's 48 hour delivery so weather permitting it'll be in my hands on Thursday. Can't wait I may phone in sick
Dont phone in sick, thats a good way to gurantee your bass will not be delivered on the day.
11. Looks good to me. but how will it play?. Who is J.Arthur Palmer, that a Precision Bass can have his moniker on it?
12. Theres a similar (sunburst) one on ebay now from Germany. It is buy it now at £797
13. Ahh man, xmas time is the wrong time to get a good price for this unless someone is buying it as an xmas pressie. If it were in The Spring i might have had it off you. Good luck with the sale though, hope you get a decent price.
14. thanks for the articles mate. Any more in the pan pipeline?
15. I wsouldnt even consider anything less than the 1.14mm thickness. Less than that and the pick bends and affects the sound quite a bit. I spose this depends on how hard you play. but sometimes you need the extra speed for those 8th and 16th downstrokes. (or up and down strkes if thats the way you play) Also give the Gibson heavey guage a try, you might get on with the slighly larger size. ps: Tortex are cool for grip.
16. Greetings and welcome. From what neck of the woods do you hail ?
17. No old basses to hanker after, though I wouldnt mind my old bright red P reg Mark III ford cortina back i know that for certain.
18. Welcome mate. You sure have a large ammount of gear there. Let me know if you get tired of any of those bases, ill do you the favour of taking one off your hands. In fact I'd walk all the way to Rome to pick one up ps: I'm bidding on ebay right now, to a similar Aria Pro II to yours. Any chance of a picture of it?
19.
I've never seen the Japanese ones, I didn't even realise they do them. The problem with Tokai is they don't advertise themselves very well, the shop I work at deals them but they don't even have Jazz sounds listed in the catalogue. In fact I think the only bass the do have is their version of the EB0.
You are quite right there. They seem to make small importers seek them out and bring in a dozen or two at a time. They're shooting themselves in the foot by not getting more involved in advertising and aggressive pushing of their guitars in magazines, like other manufacturers do. Id like to know more about Tokai and Matsumoto, but all i see are Fender and clones from China. PS: Do i understand this correctly. a Tokai Rockinbetter is nothing to do with Tokai ??

Hi

Welcome to the Forum, mate.
21. Tis weird the things people will pay premium for! I would not say it was worth more than a new classsic vibe P bass, and nor would i pay more for one.
22.
A while back someone on Harmony Central tried to organise a group buy from China. I didn't follow the thread because it was US only, and then I got banned (for using the word 'Jap' - European Americans don't like it).
Just out of interest what on earth are these hyper sensitive European Americans ? ps. the Ric copies look cool though not very like the archetype model, unless im looking at the wrong one. Where is the 4004 copy?. As for Roman, Couldnt we find out via someone else. Lets bypass him he aint been seen in 3 years on this forum. I registrered there ok
23. You hear a most excellent and groovy baseline, and you cant find out who its by, what the songs called or anything. Argghhh. It happened to me today walking past a gentleman's attire boutique.
24. You pay the bills, you call the shots. Or you take your business elsewhere. It wouldnt take too many doing that to bring the impudent pup to heel.
25. A fine bass sir, and a great job in building it. Certainly wish i had someone mentoring me to do the same. Can you explain a bit more about thje "spit-type" routing method. I cant really understand how you mean. Have you got any pics of it being done?.
