3.
You can't just assume that because songs were written mostly for a particular instrument that means it's what instrument you're going to get: my mum got a thin lizzy songbook out of the library yesterday arranged for PIANO!
Yep I saw a Pixies songbook the other day for Guitar, vocals and piano. F#kin piano!!!! when the hell has a piano ever been anywhere near a Pixies song? (or a Thin Lizzy one for that matter?) I mean why on earth bother with a piano arrangement ? Why not put kim deal's bass on there it'd be a lot easier for a start. Hey why not go all the way and arrange for Tasmanian nose flute or Kentucky arse trumpet ? Some publishers want shooting. Or at the very least a cuffing around the back of the head with a plank so their false teeth shoot out, like in the Beano or something. Honestly. thick as a brick. I mean piano!! Bleedin Piano ffs ............................... Arghhhhhhhhhhh Rant rave gnash gnash Grrrr
Random Strangler legend. A mates bro in law used to roadie for the "Strugglers" (as he calls them) in the old days, he told me their keyboard player has a bag that he carries all the time & nobody ever knew what was in it, he never let it out of his sight. Nobody ever managed to see inside it. Cheers, Norm
I wonder what was in the bag?? My guess is this. Possibly a midget maestro, who would sneak out of the bag. Which had been nonchalantly placed under the Organ* just before the gig started, then, out of sight of the audience and the rest of the band, reach up and play the keys whilst Dave's hands flew left and right giving the impression of him doing the playing. Well thats keyboard players for ya. They make drummers look normal by comparison. *Dave Green played huge Organs not keyboards

I could evedn show you better ones for Stranglers tunes such as this one: But as been mentioned here in this thread, they are often wrong. The reason i wanted a Songbook was to see the sheet music for the bass, or maybe even the entire bands individual music (guitar, organ etc) I know this is pushing it a bit, but i do have songbooks like that for the Rolling Stones, Bob Marley or Black Sabbath, amongst others, so its not as if they aren't some out there. Also a songbook could be put on a music stand in front of me, which is my preferred method of reading whilst (trying) to play.

  11.
I presume JJ Burnel was meant.
Indeed it was. To his family and friends he's just John
There was a similar thread a year or so back by a guy who bought a Ramones tab book
Fair enough, however the Ramones don't put Dee Dee right in the front of the mix, and his sixteenth and eighth note rooting isn't exactly inventive. So its much less likely to be put out in songbook format. ( not knocking them, the first 3 albums were great, and i was lucky enough to see them at their peak over 30 years ago.) The Stranglers on the other hand have a famous bass driven sound, not to mention that the first bass heavy song most of us heard by them in the summer of 1977 was what inspired many of us to pick up a bass in the first place. Indeed is often the first thing a bass neophyte tries or wants to learn. (Well for bass players of my generation anyway) The really puzzling thing is that there are no alternatives. As far as i can ascertain The Stranglers have never put out a songbook with bass in. Indeed this is the only songbook of any form i can find for the band.? I found a server with over 500 songbooks on it, most of them either by bands id never heard of. Else by Metalica or Megadeath or some-such who appeared to have about ten each! But not a one by The Stranglers.

  13.
Hi All, Well, not quite so Sunny Devon right now ... night ... I've been playing aroung 15 years on and off, current gear RBX 260, Hohner "The Jack", Markbass CMD151 mini, Markbass CL104. Playing in a "genre blurring" band - well, we don't know what it is we play, and no-one can tell us either. Probably due to us being in our 30s and 40s with a diverse range of influences to call up. Keeps 'em guessing! Anyway, I've read this forum quite a bit, so thought it was time to join and contribute!
I lived in sunny Torquay for a while. It was certainly sunnier than some parts of the UK, thats for sure. Welcome to the forum.
  14.
Most of these books are aimed at musically untrained teenagers who are learning their favorite bands tunes through power chords, its how I started I would also guess that anyone who can read the whole arrangement, and has the skill to play those lines, wouldn't really need the book to work out stranglers songs Not sure I've got the drift of this thread, it might have gone over me head a little
Yes some 'tab' books are aimed at people wanting a quick way of learning their favourite tunes and nothing wrong with that. However i also have some highly detailed songbooks which show notation for the entire band. For instace i have a Rolling Stones one that gives music for about 6 or 7 instruments. I might also dispute your inferance that Stranglers songs are somehow straightforward to play. I assure you that some are quite complex, even the bass lines. I belive what makes the bass interesting in the Stranglers is that before picking up the bass, John was a talented classical guitar player trained in the Spanish style since he was 12 years old. This lead to him having a busier more experimental style than the usual root note Pub rock and later Punk bands they were competing with.
  15. Parcel farce lied and said id twice not been in when they called, even though my package was delivered to my parents house who are pensioners and never go out and a dog that barks the house down if the gate so much as squeeks. They then said it'd been sent back down south to their depot, instead of leaving it in the north west. I dont belive that my parcel even came near my home town. They could have also left it with either neighbours if it needed a signature. I firmly belive that if a driver only has a few parcels left and its getting near days end, that they just drive on straight home and fiddle the paperwork. Why the bosses dont just check the tachograph i'll never know. Or maybe i do know. They dont want bad stuff happening on their watch, so they just back the drivers who seem to be about 50% lying scumbags.

Câmara de Lobos, Funchal and Santa cruz are good sized towns. (Câmara is bigger than my town and we have 3 music shops) Surely there must be music shops there ? Can you look them up on the interweb?
  17. I spied a Stranglers songbook [it was the one and only one I could find] for sale on the interweb and although i could not really make out what it said on the little pic of the front of the book, I just foolishly assumed that it was either a complete arrangement, or for guitar and bass or bass only. Well I mean, The Stranglers were a famousl bass fronted band. Did they even have a guitar player? I know they had some freaky deaky keyboard abuser. But guitar? I cant remember hearing one.? Anywaay..... The book appears this morning and yes you have guessed it. I open it up and is for "guitar treble clef" only. Wot a rotten poxy snotty swizz! Maybe I can get a bluey for it on fleabay, at least thats something. Oh wait hold on....... it has 'Bass arrangement for guitar 'on the song Peaches! Phew! that makes it all worth it. Like all bass players I have not the foggiest idea how the bass line to Peaches was notated. Its a total mystery. But now thanks to this songbook I can finally play it. I'll let you know how i get on.
  18. Thanks guys. It seems obvious now you explain it. I think the fingering was getting me confused (along with where to start the slide from)

Does ebay not have a Portugal website? So you dont have to pay import tax. Is Portugal not in the EC? I thought that tax was not paid if goods were bought in another EC country? If not or if you cannot find anything on there, your best bet might be to go to the nearest big city and see what the music shops there sell. Where are you based in Portugal? Maybe you can find out online where the nearest big music shop is and use a little of the 500 euros to travel there.

  21. I sometimes see a slide symbol in notation and in tabs, where for instance a sequence of notes in a bar might be something such as C E E A with the slide on the A note. (see pic below) My question is; If the note before the slide is on a different string how on earth is one supposed to slide up to it?
  22. Why is simultaneously playing bass and singing so hard? I have laughed to myself when I have seen on ebay a few times, reasons for selling such as 'practically new bass, my boyfriend decided it was too hard to play bass and sing at the same time, so i am selling this on his behalf...' etc I admit i tried and to my total surprize find it very difficult indeed.(ie: flipping impossible) I have looked on the interweb and find its sposed to be harder to do than playing lead and singing together. Any comments? Any help? cheers
  23. In my ever so humble opinion. There's just summat about a headless bass that looks wrong. Like its been circumcized or something. PS (if there was a ducking behind the sofa icon I'd be using it about now) PPS: that ACG Harlot with ebony top that OBBM shows on the first page of this thread is absolutely beautiful and is what I will buy if i ever get a spare few grand, it will definitely have a headstock though Something like a hybrid of these two below.
  24. Hello and greetings CK. Are you a KC fan then ? From where do you hail?
  25. My Stagg stand has been good to me since i recieved it a year ago. The stand has a clip at the top to stop the bass being knocked onto the floor.
