£400 will get you a lot of bass these days. There are always the Squier Classic Vibe range of course, or maybe something by Yamaha, who rarely make a bad bass. Or maybe a Warwick Rockbass Fortress. There was one of them for sale here a while back for £200, eventually £165 notes, in Gatwick, so not too far from you, shame you were not around in August for it. But you can get a new one for less than £400 if you shop around. Take your time and look around. Welcome to the forum. Wish id taken up the bass as a young un like you. Keep it up.
I emailed the editor and told him about it! Also mentioned that the photos they used are of a BB2024x - you can clearly see the difference in body shape and the "CRAFTED IN JAPAN" on the headstock as well as the dead giveaway, "BB2024X". Surely someone should pick up on this stuff; a bass weighing nearly two stone!! Even someone manly enough to own a 400+ and a 1516 would balk at that kinda weight!
Man thats slack, too slack. I didnt catch the 'crafted in Japan' pic, though i have only read it through once whilst walking back from town. But they should have seen it surely.
QUOTE (daz @ Oct 30 2010, 02:45 PM) You've done a man's job, sir! I guess you're through, huh?

I don't know about "through". Certainly skint
Skint maybe, but worth it though eh? Sorry i was trying to be clever and use a quote from Blade Runner.
You've done a man's job, sir! I guess you're through, huh
Thats what Gaff says to Deckard after he fights with Batty on the roof at the end. As for your tribute bass. I have never seen that shape before. Must admit im quite taken with it, there is something pleasing about the offset symetry of the horns.(if there is such a thing)
Ah, right. You REALLY don't need one of these mate! Can you do a set up, playing with the truss rod? If you can then all you need are tools to adjust the truss rod and the bridge saddles, and possibly a capo to check for the right neck relief. The best action is the one you are comfortable with. Medium low is about 2mm at the 12th on the E string (space between top of fret and bottom of E string), but it all depends on the bass itself. Every neck is a little different and behave differently when setting the relief with the truss rod. You sound like you need to get it set up professionally at the moment. I hope that helps.
Im fine with my hands and regularly fix my own car or do welding for others people. So Im quite happy to steam in with screw drivers and Allen keys a' flying. I know from past experience though, thats not the way to do it. Ever since at age 8, whenI first took apart the family record player and couldnt put it back together I have a couple of cheapo bass that i can practice on. In fact i already have. Im having trouble with moving the bridge screw backward or forward and synchronizing it with string height. I do exactly as recommended but cant seem to get it right. This is really the reason i want a measurement device. To make sure im not moving too far or too fast etc. The thing is, if i cant get it right on a parctice bass, im obviously reluctant to try it on my CVJ. Not that im pretending it on a par with a Lakland or a Warwick.(or your own beautuful Chris Squier Electra tribute bass) But if i mess it up, ill actually have to pay someone else to fix it for me. I will read your instructions through and try again. Cheers.
Why would you want that accuracy is what I meant. Unless you were asked to set up a bass by someone else, or have to set up your own bass each time you change strings to the micro-millimeter.
Oh right i guess we misunderstood each other then. Why i need it is because I'm something of a beginner, not yet quite a year has gone by since i picked up the bass. Well i don't actually know what a low or high action would sound or feel like. If someone asked me what my own string height was i wouldn't really have a clue, beyond "high ish". So id like to set up my bass exactly where it feels best and then see what the measurements are. I spose what I'm saying is i just need to know these things. I'm the same when i get into anything at first. I'm not comfortable till i know it inside out.
I don't know about the UK, but just order one from Stew Mac. I got a whole fretting kit from them, no hassle. Lord knows why you'd want one of these gauges though. And if you do, you could make one easily.
I wouldn't trust myself to accurately mark off the quarter millimeter intervals (or the sixty fourths of an inch either) The reason i want one is that it gives a guarantee of measurement accuracy.

Is there anywhere in the UK i can get one of these Stewmac action gauges, or something very similar. .

Just mailed a post at the magazine forum, so hopefully the matter of the Kilos or pounds will be confirmed one way or the other before too long.
Absolutely, 100%, spot on - right down to the school years, the "I hate the Beatles" 6-7 year old kids, and not liking Elvis though recognizing the stupidity of denying his influence. Yep, these sort of arguments truly are hilarious.
Rubbish. Saying i loathe the Beatles (which i do and always have done) Is not the same as saying i don't acknowledge the effect they have had on late 20th century songwriting . For good or ill its obviously been huge, only a fool (or a troll) would try to say otherwise. I am 48 years old so i grew up hearing their twee tripe on the radio day in day out. I'm sure i have heard as many if not more songs by them over the years as most people here. I dislike both their songs and singing, and that damn "Whoooooo' of McCartney's pursed lips like he's just sat on a boiling kettle and the steam is singing through his cakehole. As for influence influence id say both Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones were a more positive force in modern music. But hey who cares what i think, its just an opinion. But saying i am stating it here just to be controversial is insulting. How on earth is anyone else here expected to know what i do or don't like. Am i suspected of being a closet Beatles fan now?

He will be telling you he doesnt do drum solo's next. Get rid of him hes obviously a pod person who has taken over your usual drummer.
And what was it that attracted you to this thread?
the thing about speakers acting as microphones.
-
So how exactly would that work?
Any speaker can act as a mike and vise versa. ps. Id crawl over broken glass to get away from Paul McCartney and his stupid shakey face going wooooooo all the time AGhhh!! Man I loathe the Beatles. There ive said it. whos with me?

Buy a four string bass. A six string bass is called a guitar. a five string bass is just wierd.

The best bass type tunes for a beginer to learn is the repetiore of The Police. Because Sting who wrote them also played bass he made sure that the bass got a decent look in. Also, everyone knows the songs already. (maybe not if your under 20) Best thing to do is get this song book and cd. Police songbook The book has the songs in bass tab, bass clef and even some treble clef for guitar. Also a cd that plays the song then plays it again without bass so you can learn to play over it yourself. here is a bass tab site, there are plenty more out there. A very good website to learn bass clef, and bass playing is this one, studybass.com It takes you through lessons one by one, it will take a few months to study the entire course properly. I still refer to it now.

After seeing GW's Tweed Fender gig bag, i decided id like one myself. Where is the best place to buy one to fit my Squire CVJ ?
Mmm, OT should definitely remain visible only to members. Threre is an enormous amount of highly personal stuff in there that should not be available to the browsing public and Daily Mail journalists. I feel very strongly about this.
yep i spose it should be members only. Things are easily blown out of propprtion these days by muck rakers.

I'd love to buy 8 or 10 sets and have a personal trial. But bass strings are so dashed expensive. (especially flats)

Starting in Torquay tthem moved to London. I thought we had Gaye Advert on the Forum for a second
Elites feel and sound like la bella's but cost much less. Also keep away from rotosound, they'l break your fingers
I play Rotosound flats with a pick and they feel fine to me.

Looks a corker though, if i come into a spare grand anytime soon i think ill be spending it on one of those. The only thing that puts me off is the Made in Indonesia label. Not that i have anything against Indonesia, its just that i have heard a few rumbles about the quality of certain basses made there not quite being up to the standards of those made in some of the Chinese factories. In fact if i had two grand spare (as if) id spend it on the Japan made big brother the BB2024X.

Great 60th issue this month. Paul Turner of Jamiroquai interviewed, among others. Slowly improving with each one. The Yamaha BB1024x is reviewed and pretty fine it looks too. Except for the weight, it supposedly weighs in at 12Kg!. Only three times as heavy as my CVJ then? Its also given as that weight on this page here given as a link below, where its for sale at £1120 ( and I cant see anywhere that its priced at the £939 mentioned in the magazine review either.) Yamaha BB1024X Surely it cant actually weigh in at 26lb ??!!

I just put some Rotosound sm77 monel flats on my cv jazz and they sound most excellent.
