However when you do leave and that smiling asistant may well accidentally trap your fingers in the door.
I can't believe that three pages in and no one has mentioned the most overplayed (and probably banned in shops) bass lick of all time. The bass line that is the outro to Fleetwood Mac - The Chain that is. If some of you don't recognise the song title (possibly the younger members), please refer to Youtube, go about 3 minutes into the song and then you'll know what I'm on about.
better known to youngsters as the 'formula one' song
2.
Did nobody notice that Jools kept calling Herb Alpert Herb ALBERT? Several times.Youda thought he could get that right!
der! even I knew it was with a P not a B. There were two great programs about Herb on BBC4 last night, only managed to record one though. The amount of great tunes he released over the years is incredible. Talking of Jools show, I have just got the box set of Old Grey Whistle test DVDs. It has reminded me of how good a series it was and how todays shows such as Jools show pale by comparison. Wish id started taping the OGWT right from the first year we got our VHS recorder. I am gonna sign back up for Usenet and see if i can get any shows from there. A few years back i recall seeing dozens of bands and entire OGWT shows to download.
If this does take place can you be sure to have a good tuner available for Mr. Manring - he seems to have difficulty in this aspect whilst performing.
Lol! nice one. I did read a guy once berating Manring on a youtube coment about his "constant fiddling about" with the machine heads during songs I will try my best and make it to the event. Will be bringing a bass playng pal with me. I will be going from the Chester area, so its maybe 80 or so miles. The trusty old Volvo should make it o'er the moor
4. 'Peaches' is one of my all time favourites, its the first punk single i ever bought and it turned me onto the bass sound. Lately i have been playing it several times a day, its become my party piece
5. First one is African and White by China Crisis, this is a Youtube clip, although its sound only. There are a few videos of them doing this live, but none are as good as the original release. the Second is Stir it up by The Wailers This Wailers clip from youtube is of The old grey Whistle Test in 1973 and has the original Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Far superior to the I Threes period.Top stuff. Both these bass lines are very simple and easy to learn in minutes. I belive they show that simple is often best when it comes to bass lines. .
6.
I've already had the "Tour" Compact and liked it so much I bought one. One word of warning I have to add. I used to have a Schroeder "carpet covered" cab and instead now use a single Compact. The cab is kept in a trailer with all of the other band gear. For the record, the Schroeder after 2 or 3 years of gigging looked almost like new ! The Compact with Roqsolid cover after a month looks beat up already. Chips out of the painted covering and worryingly, heavy scarring where a flightcase has rubbed against the Compact and the ply is seriously dented. Alex, please, please, please give us a carpet cover option ! I'd happily have an extra 1kg of weight for slightly heavier plywood and a carpet finish.
that sounds like a good idea for an option.
7. welcome to the forum. I only picked up a bass at last xmas myself. I have found this forum a good plce for advice. As for playing and singing at the same time. I was watching Talking Heads last night, and noticed that David Burns on Whistle Test was clearly keeping his head angled at his fret fingering hand and the mic was in a close position where he could sing into it at the same time as he played, but the playing was obviously taking the bulk of his concentration. Maybe thats the way to go about it.?
8. greetings and welcome to the forum.
9. welcome mate. Sure wish i'd started playing at 13 though keep it up.
10. Some more tracks here. They are five generic practice tracks really. The music is balanced in the middle, but shift it over to the left speaker its bass only, or shift over to the right speaker its everything but the bass, so you can play whatever bass accompaniment you want over it. These can be opened in any mp3 player or program. 1: rock track 2: blues rock 3: 12 bar shuffle swing 4: Motown groove 5: Jazz Ballad PS: You can if you want more versitility, open the Multitrack Audio files such as the Nirvana or Marvin Gaye ones etc posted earlier in this thread, in Audacity. Its real handy as you can import as few or as many of these individual tracks as you want, ie, just the kick drum, guitar1, and Vocal and then play your own bass over the top. A real boon for practising. NB: If you want to open the (.mp3) multitracks in Audacity, DONT do the obvious and go to File / Open. (unless its just a single track) Or you may well have multiple instances of Audacity opening up for each individual track. The way to do it is go to Project / import audio and import whic hever ones you want, either one at a time or alltogether using the ctrl key.
11. thanks for the heads up. see you all there.
12. imagine accidentally sitting on that. OUCH!
13.
Sorry, haven't spoken to the person 'in the know' for a while.
Any update yet? Just out of interest i'd like to know if i have an alder or basswood bass? PS: I bought my CV jazz in Spring this year, it had an CGS09***** crafted in china serial number.
14.
Yes, I believe, as a rule, in C, the augmented 5th would be G# and, as my son said to me only the other day, 'augmented 5ths are awesome'.
I would have thought kids more likely to say "diminished fifths are awesome" Epscially after hearing the (in)famous Black Sabbath Devils Interval!
15. There is a thread on the forum somewhere that i cant find. It had many posts in it and was about some guy whose pal had gone over to see the factory in China where the CV bases were made. He said they were moving them to Indonesia. Several on here thought it was the other way around. Anywho i cant seem to see the thread as i forgot the title of it. Can some kind person point me in the right direction please?
16. looks like some Vulcan battle weapon.
17.
Yeah, i was looking on Dawsons site this morning. Quite (very) expensive. I paid £249 for my CV Jazz from Soundslive in June. They still have one in stock for £289 I do like the look of the amber VM P with maple neck. Might go for that soon.
Its actually a fine shop, (a kid with his dad was twanging a guitar whilst i was in there)I think the only problem with Dawsons is the lack of competition. Apart from those prices its a good shop with knowlegeable staff who let you try instruments. There is one other music shop in Chester though, just off the town hall square. Back alley music. (dont know anything about the staff here, though i must say i never heard anyone playing on or ask to try an instrument in there) The prices there are: Back Alley price: Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz Bass Olympic White £269.00 - Dawsons price £379 Back Alley price: Squier Classic Vibe 60s P Bass Sonic Blue £279 Back Alley price: Squier Classic Vibe 50s P Bass Lake Placid Blue £289 - Dawsons price £389 Back Alley price: Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Natural £249 - Dawsons price £299 I certainly know where id go if i were in the market for a squier bass. I have no affiliation with either shop. sorry for thread hijack. Let us know how you got on with your choice.
18.
Damn - nothing cheap ever appears when I want to buy it!
I have just been in to Dawsons Chester. Their price for a classic vibe Jazz is now £379!. Glad i bought mine in the spring for £280. Though even then, those "in the know" were predicting that Fender would have to increase the price of this guitar, as too many were buying them and declaring them as good as if not better than the mexico Fenders. In fact i read this in every bass forum i went to, to research it before buying. ps: Their Squier James Johnston Jazz Bass was £389! has the entire range gone up ?
19. I have a .mogg file here (multiple track ogg) of the Rolling Stones, Gimme Shelter. It is multitrack and needs to be opened with Audacity. Not sure what other programmes can open it. You can have bass only or mute all except bass or any track and play along. click here for Gimme Shelter multitrack if you need Audacity - free!

21. cheers guys, just what i wanted.
22. Is there any free software out there that will slow down an mp3? I know its asking a lot but is there any free /Public domain software that will also slow a track and keep the correct pitch?
23.
Not one to boast, buy my dad wrote the bassline for that!
credits say Lydon, Levene, Atkins, none of them bass players? whos your dad then. spill the beans?
24. Hmm dunno about that roasted neck thingy. Airless burning of wood produces charcoal, airless burning of coal produces coke. Both hard but brittle. I dont think asking to see the tech specs for production and testing is asking too much. Have they even considered the long term of the effect. Maybe 4 years down the line they all snap under normal string pressure on the neck? by the way, who is BP?
25.
I thought they were all poster boy's recruited by McLaren to look the part in the new 'Punk' band....
No, Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, and Paul Jones all learned to play quite well. As for being 'recruited by McLaren' to look the part in the new punk band. Steve Jones hassled MacLaren for months to manage & help them. He only said yes to stop Steve stealing stuff from the shop. This was in 1975 before Punk was started. 'Pub Rock' was the big scene from 72 to 76. (Kilburn & the high roads, Dr Feelgood, Ducks deluxe, Roogalator, etc) It was a backlash againt the prog rock 20 minute drum solo, lock yourself in a room for 10 years and learn to play virtuoso before your first gig, school of thought
